Looks like he has mostly played on the wing in the OHL...not to say he is not a worthwhile add but a center via the portal still a need.

Yeah, I scrolled through some of the past Kitchener line charts and he seems to switch back and forth between center and wing but seems to be on the wing more often.
What connection do we have with Humphreys?

he was at the NTDP with Ziemer and Mooney, other than that I couldn’t tell ya

Another good weekend for Grimes. Leading USHL D in +\- and top ten in points per game. Also, <10% of his points are on the power play which is a positive sign given his productivity.
Phillips on the other hand, every time I look at the box score it’s the same old issue with penalties.

The goal Grimes scored was pretty sweet too!

The extra year in SF has done Grimes a ton of good. Has gone from 13 points last year to 33 points and climbing this year. He will hit campus at age 19 this fall.

We're all going to have to pretend to be shocked when his development gets stunted from sitting in the box for 10 minutes a night...
Grimes with another defenseman of the week honor.

If Grimes is able to walk in and play solid minutes down the lineup next season it drastically changes the outlook of next year’s team. Obviously he’ll still have his freshman moments, but he’ll have the luxury of playing sheltered minutes to ease him in.
Grimes stays hot.

Mace’o Phillips healthy scratched by Green Bay. Just a disaster of a season for a player who has real upside. Cant see a reason to bring him in next season.
A pretty good recruit by former Coach Motzko and staff.

Motzko is certainly not leaving the cupboards bare that’s for sure. Need to hang on to these guys.
Hmmmmm 🤔 I wonder what possibly could have been a good way to hang on to all these good recruits Motko got in the pipeline? 😉
If the Cullens decommit (and take Joey with them) the bitching will be rather ironic.
Yes I realize Joey hasn't committed yet but when the other two Cullens committed to Bob we basically had Joey. Both Cullens aren't going to switch their commitments away from Michigan State to the Gophers if the family's plan wasn't for Joey to commit to Bob when it was his time to commit.

Wyatt was never committed to MSU
Brooke was committed to Michigan State and once it was Wyatt's time to commit they both committed to Bob (Brooke switching away from Michigan State). It was a package deal and it is pretty clear that Joey was going to commit to Bob once it was his time to commit.
Michigan State was trying to do the same thing (get them all) and is why they offered Brooke but Bob was able to convince the family to switch.
It is certainly possible we see some commits go elsewhere.
At the same time, a good coach/recruiter should be able to get players on board (assuming they fit their vision) with the new direction. Most of these recruits also likely had an idea they may not spend their entire career with Motzko given his age/contract situation at the time of their commit. If nothing else, there is opportunity to hit campus and play right away given the need for guys who can produce.

Would be fine with that, we have an abundance of the Nevers type as it is.
Next coach will probably cut Nevers and Phillips loose I would think
Is Nevers not your ideal 13th forward? USHL captain, old & heavy, bleeds maroon and gold. Assuming we cut Falloon and Harris loose then we got room for Nevers and Brooks Cullen as 13, 14.

Roster makeup essential there. If Nevers/Cullen are your 13th and 14th forwards, no issue with the setup. It is of course contingent on making sure you're not routinely counting on depth players to be big contributors.

I would agree with this line of thinking. Falloon has had his shot imo(always injured annyways) and Harris should have never been on the roster in the first place. I’d rather try a couple new lower line guys and see if you can find some guys who overachieve.
Katz with a hat trick. Up to 28 goals, 9th in the USHL.
Phillips picked up an assist before a game misconduct. Another 17 PIMs to the total.
Why would you ever recruit a 13th forward? Get 13-14 guys that you can play in your top 9 and let the talent and production decide who emds up on the 4th lineNext coach will probably cut Nevers and Phillips loose I would think

Because news flash skilled players don’t wanna watch from the press box. Can’t believe I have to explain the concept of a role player. Every team has them. Michigan, North Dakota, MSU, all the heavyweights.
News flash, if players are in your press box, then you won't care when they leave. Having to bring in another Moe or Pritchard every year is a much better plan than having to watch 134 games of J. Has a college hockey roster ever been made up of 14 scoring/skilled forwards? Has that ever happened? I feel like you’re choosing to beef with the most normal concept ever.
I guess that depends on your definition of scoring/skilled. I wouldn't consider Beckett Hendrickson a skilled scoring forward but he's a guy that would play in anyone's top 9.News flash, if players are in your press box, then you won't care when they leave. I don't know enough about Nevers to give any sort of opinion of him specifically, but if the scouting report is anything like-" you don't really want him in the lineup, but if he has to play, he won't kill you". That's not a player worth recruiting. That's how you end up with guys like Michel, or Harris playing 25% of your season.
On a good team your 4th line is made up of freshmen like Hendrickson, Moe, Pritchard, Lamb, Kurth, Strobel, Brodzinski, J. Nelson. The good ones will move up the lineup at some point in their careers, the decent ones will stay on the 4th line, and the bad ones move on to somewhere else. You don't deliberately recruit a player to be one of the "bad ones" just to avoid hurting someones feelings.
We're not even sure that someone like Nevers is going to be on the roster given that you've got more forwards coming in than going out as it currently stands
If Nevers comes in as your last man in the forward group, then it's really just not that big of a deal.
Every year the Gophers should just bring in 14 forwards like Logan Cooley along with 9 defensemen like Brock Faber and let them battle it out for playing time. I'm surprised no Gopher coach has ever thought of this. 🤔 😉 😆

I am not even trying to argue for or against Mason Nevers, my argument is with the philosophy of needing a player or two who are clearly not good enough to play at this level.

can i just settle for guys on the 4th line who will actually check opposing teams other lines?
People wanna talk about Casey. People wanna talk about Luke. Give me another four years of John Mittlestadt. Dude happily accepted his role as a fourth line center for four years. Nevers is better than both of those players, I would argue.
I think that was the issue, 12 guys for 1-2 spots. Outside of Ziemer, Mooney, and Lamb (and maybe Moore once he develops), we had a roster full of bottom 6 forwards. I would certainly hope so. But again, Nevers isn't really the discussion. My argument is if it's smart to roster players who have no business being on a D1 roster? This is exactly what was said about Nick Michel and Graham Harris the past two seasons. How did that work out?
Nevers is better than both of those players, I would argue.
I have no issue with recruiting a guy like J. Mittlestadt or Charlie Stroble and having it turn out that they're really not an everyday level player. I do have an issue with creating a roster where those players are required to be everyday players because you already filled the 13th-14th forward spot with a guy who has no business playing at this level.
Nevers isn't really the discussion.
He's a part of it!
If you think we're just making a point as a program to go after guys who aren't worth a DI spot, that's silly, very silly.
There isn't a recruit waiting in the wings right now that wouldn't find a home on a DI roster elsewhere.

Are you arguing that Nick Michel was the best possible recruit available to Motzko and the Gophers two years ago? That Graham Harris was the same one year ago?

when we're rostering Harris and don't even fill the forward room roster slots (not to mention Rud and Begley), I think discussing this approach is rather unnecessary.
fill the roster with the best possible talent you can and who is playing on what line will sort itself out.
Michel and Harris were both born from needing a body to fill the roster after being blindsided twice with players leaving.
The discussion would make more sense to pivot to why in 2 of the last 3 off seasons the Gophers were shocked to find guys leaving early for the pros. But now that Bob is out, both topics are dead.
The bolded above is a really quick and easy way to say what I have been trying to. Competition for playing time is a good thing.Nevers isn't really the discussion.

Worrying about guys getting their feelings hurt because they aren't good enough to win a roster spot doesn't make any sense to me. You're always going to have recruits that fail to live up to the expectations/hopes. That's why you bring in the best possible 14-15 forwards you can get your hands on and let the best 12 play. If the bottom 2 or 3 don't like that, they won't be missed.
A lot of this discussion revolves around whether you want 4th liners who play all 4 years and accept their role or you risk guys like Broz (pretty sure he was a third liner?) transferring because they think they should get more top 6 and PP opportunities. At which point you're gonna have a lot of turnover there year to year. I don't think that'd be the worst thing ever but if you constantly have disgruntled fourth liners who don't wanna hit anyone or get hit (and I say this as someone who doesn't think physicality is the end all) because they know they're gonna transfer at the end of the year that probably wouldn't be ideal. I suppose it depends on what gets pitched to some of these recruits because they're not dumb and know they can't all get top 6/PP time.
I think we all agree those guys shouldn't be D3 caliber players, I also don't think John Mittlestadt on the fourth line was a problem per se (unlike say Romanko and some of those guys back in the day lol).

Yep John was a pretty classic guy who will end up staying. Some will stay, some will go, but really not a roster slot you should lose sleep over and you should be able to also poach that type of player from elsewhere consistently if needed
