Now THAT is cool
I was wondering if that was him tonight. I would have thought he would have signed it before now, so seeing it now is a pleasant surprise.
Not sure about Friday, but tonight Michigan seemed like the team they should have been all season had they not had all the Mel drama.
Does someone have the specialty team numbers from tonight? I was kind of falling asleep all night, but aside from not converting on the 45 second or so 2ADV, our PP seemed kind of decent. According to CHN, we were at 25.58% for the season as of this morning, which is certainly much better than last year when we were just hoping to trend in that direction this time of year.
With the other two conference series this weekend also being splits, the standings are more or less the same as they were Friday afternoon (apart from MSU obviously).

Gophers were lucky to get it to OT - I thought they were outplayed for too many stretches and you can't do that against Michigan.
Too many penalties against, some sloppy coverage in front of Close, and that 3rd line woof!

Yeah that third line needs to be better. We really need more from them if we’re going to all the way. Good to see Huglen get a goal but otherwise they seemed to have a tough night. Bad turnover from them in the offensive zone gave Michigan a good chance to bring it back down to our end and low and behold there’s goal number four for Michigan. I’m sorry that I’m repeating myself but the most disappointing thing for this weekend wasn’t the split itself but how sloppy our play was and careless we could be with the puck. At times we made it too easy for the Wolverines. Too easy exit their zone and too easy to enter ours. We’re better than that but we didn’t show it tonight.
Gophers were in a 2-goal hole before the crowd even got their coats off. That's not the way to start a game against an elite team. Michigan had more scoring opportunities than Minnesota, but the Gophers were too loose in their own end.
Not sure, but I think the Cooley line might have been on the ice for at least 2 of Michigan's goals.
I said before the series I wanted to see the team play a defensive oriented game. Well, they sure didn't do that tonight.
The overtime was just...ugh...whatever Motzkos strategy was there, it backfired. The Cooley line never even touched the ice. I love Faber, but I think he underestimated the speed of his opponent on the GWG.
frustrating weekend series as some have alluded to. far too sloppy in our own end with the Cooley line having some defensive lapses, the D core making some uncharacteristic mistakes, and the Huglen line overall having a rough weekend imo. That being said, that is much more what I expected Michigan to look like this season and wouldn't be surprised if we see them again in the B10 tournament title as well as in the NCAA tourney somewhere, provided they can stay out of their own way with the shenanigans. Don't think this was hit on much, but Portillo also was very solid for them. All of our goals were "good" goals with him not giving up anything soft. They'll need that with how they play given some of their own lack of defense.
Hard to sweep a team of that caliber twice in a season. Both teams had their moments. Michigan needed Saturdays game and it showed. They were the more desperate hockey team.
With the position the Gophers are in standing wise and Pairwise, teams will want to make their hay against them. Huge target on the Gophers.
The Cooley line is a double edged sword. They don’t seem interested in defense, but we all want them on the ice when we need a goal. Risk reward with those three.
You can kind of expect the team to be doing a little too much with the puck in a series like this vs Michigan where it’s skill on skill. I expect a much more workmen like effort against Michigan State. Sweep Sparty and we’ll all forget about this one pretty quick!
Some say disappointing loss, I say points in 11 straight conference games!
I thought a series against the Whioux a few year back was the largest weekend?? very few seats open & standing room was full as well. Lots if seats open both games this weekend & nobody around the railing. It was announced that it was the largest attendance for a 2 game series in Mariucci history. More than any WCHA series... B1GMISTAKE?
Skated like the wind & showed the most energy on the team. Just couldn’t put it together beyond that.I thought Pitlick had a rough game out there. Way too many easy turnovers.
Cant win em all.
Salute to the other team??Why the stick salute? Stop doing it when you didn’t sweep.

Just a hunch but I think the Gopher Ticket office has figured out how to sell more tickets by factoring in the no shows. Specifically I think they oversell the student section which is general admission, and they are now more comfortable if a few students spill out into standing room/unused seats.
My guess is this weekend's actual used tickets would be less than the Whioux series you refer to. But this is splitting hairs/speculation, great to see an amazing crowd both nights and they all got to see very entertaining games. Some new life long fans got created this weekend.

I think it’s now a salute to thank the fans and I don’t have an issue with it. The Battle hymn is for sweeps, the stick salute is a thank you.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

Totally agree. I see it as a token of appreciation for showing up and supporting.

It’s pretty much only been done after sweeps since I’ve been a Gopher Hockey fan. It meant something big when you saw a stick salute along with the Battle Hymn. It’s lost it’s luster now that it’s done all the time (like every other team) so I guess I’m sad to see that tradition go. Now it’s just another generic stick salute.
sigh, get off my lawn I guess. ?
Times are a changing as well as traditions. The list is probably a mile long for me that I wish I could change back. Some big and some small. The stick salute was always at the “U” for the second night of a home sweep. At least they are keeping the ‘Battle Hymn’ for the second night of home sweeps.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I liked the tradition too, but because it is them saying “Thank you” to the fans (us) I have had a hard time finding a leg to stand on and say “STOP IT!” ?

I don't have a hard time ripping them for it...
You can tell they hate doing it after a loss and that they are doing it just to do it... Not genuine at all.
So don't do it.

I hear ya though. Some traditions have gone by the wayside, and some are now being built as future traditions. I LOVE the pregame video with the player intros when the players say where they are from. This is year 2 of them doing that I think. Must keep that one in the future. As you know the cheers from the students are all but dead except the funnel chant. I'm with you on the stick salute deal at center ice. A good compromise would have been during non sweeps when the players skated to the student section that they would line up and do one on the goal line. Or just have the players spread out in each direction to stick salute the fans, not at center ice for non sweeps. The center ice salute is (was) special.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Maybe someone here with connections could say something to the powers that be? That as fans we would prefer to keep the stick salute as something special - if the players don’t like doing it after a loss that should tell you something too. ?♀️
Agreed with @frozen4champs that they can do something else to thanks the fans.
Oh, and bring back those long full-team posters. I miss those. 😉
Bright spot on the weekend: the penalty kill. It was lights out all weekend long.

Special teams overall was pretty good this weekend. Stellar penalty kill and the PP scored some big goals when it mattered.
Last night Michigan showed just how talented and dangerous they are. I look for them to move up the B1G standings in the 2nd half and into a home ice position. That said, the Gophers played with them last night even though they came out flat. The Gophers top line struggled in their D zone and a couple of lazy, failed exits caused a couple of the Michigan goals. Cooley has really improved on his draws lately. He was 25-9 this weekend. I also thought Ryan Johnson did ok filling in on the 2nd PP for Mittelstadt. Close made some remarkable saves in the 3rd to keep them in it.

I'm sure it's Bob telling them to do it. He added the salute to the student section as well. So take it up with him.

I am with you on the TEAM posters, I miss those too. I always got a kick out of the silly antics and posing. We hang each year near our hockey viewing spot, ceremonially changing from old to new. Not having the full team isn’t the same at all.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

Finally listened to Motzko's postgame this morning. He made sure to mention this, and even used the word "flop".

The DMV in Apple Valley misses them as well. I swear they have every year on the wall.
@cowgirl, Do you and your husband use the AV DMV?!?!?!

Yep. The guy helped my get my custom plates too. You have to fill out a form with up to four choices (in case the ones you want are gone). I was pretty sure my top choices were taken; I got my fifth choice. The guy laughed when we handed him three pages of choices. ?
“The diving was atrocious, and the stripes were buying into it"
The coaching staff at Michigan must breakdown old footage of Robbie Earl while at wisconSIN.
Keep your stick on the ice...
He’s great. Known him for 20 plus years, prior to him working at the DMV. I’ll wait in line until he calls my number.

I mean, I don’t think he’s necessarily wrong. It was the same last year in the B1G championship game. Those checks into the boards from Nelson and Broz were going to get called all day. But never forget Blankenburg flying into Portillo after 170 pound Huglen just put some pressure on him or Samoskevich going down like Chris Kyle sniped him from the rafters when Knies just got a good, clean open ice hit on him.
I’m not so much frustrated with the refs for tossing Snuggerud Saturday night. With the way the college game is called now that’s going to be a five every night. What’s frustrating is 1) Snuggy should know better. Puck is in offensive zone and there’s five seconds left? Come on kid. Use your head. 2) is the Michigan player seeing Snuggy coming in for the check, intentionally lowering his head, flopping like a dead fish on the ice, and then getting rewarded for that.
Between Portillo’s antics with the net, Michigan players going down easily, and then also acting like tough guys when they can get away with it. There’s a reason they’re one of the more unliked teams in the country.
I thought Fantilli was shot by the way he went down after the Cooley "high stick".

And 10 seconds before, Knies had his stick chopped in half by a slash, with no call, of course.I thought Fantilli was shot by the way he went down after the Cooley "high stick".
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

This certainly won't hurt the rivalry. ?
Haha hey, continue to fan those flames as far as I’m concerned.

Late in the third period there was an obvious hold against Knies on the boards in the offensive zone - to which the ref turned a blind eye. He gets held and hooked as much as any player I have seen but rarely benefits from a call.
A minute or two later Kurth took a hard slash on the forearm that was also *ahem* "missed" by the refs.
It was a classic case of not blowing the whistle "to decide a game." Somehow, however, they did manage to whistle Minnesota for a penalty with about 4 minutes remaining.
MI probably deserved that win, but the refs did the Gophers no favors.
THESE are the non-calls that infuriate me. "We don't want to decide the game with penalties, so we'll let the team that's got more offensive skill have their players abused by the other team and keep them from scoring that way"A minute or two later Kurth took a hard slash on the forearm that was also *ahem* "missed" by the refs.

Knies is the classic case of being so strong that it actually works against you. He gets mauled constantly but doesn't fall down or get thrown off the puck becuase of his sheer power. Consequently he doesn't get the penalty call.
Maybe we need him to take up some of those Michigan acting classes before the postseason
The way it's MEANT to work is that the refs call penalties based on actions, not results.
No, I'm not holding my breath on that one.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
I think that's the one where his head snapped back a full two seconds after the hit.I thought Fantilli was shot by the way he went down after the Cooley "high stick".
One very negative from Saturday's game was the two drunken forty somethings sitting behind us. Neither could construct a legible sentence on his best day, but both were quite comfortable and adept at directing ear-splitting F bombs at the refs every time they skated into the corner in front of Section 15.
I finally turned around to caution one of them that there were young and impressionable ears all around us, to which he replied, "F*** You!" He even gave me the one finger salute, in case I misconstrued the meaning of his words. I calmly informed him that I won't ask him again. I'll just go find me a yellow shirt, and they'll escort him out of the building.
I hadn't really experienced the downside of beer sales a Mariucci until Saturday night.
Kinda imagine those same people would be loaded even if beer sales didn’t exist.
@trixr4kids Probably true but they were double fisting the tall boys at the game as well.

The games are barely 2 hours long how drunk can you get off regular beer?
tBob knows we will likely see them at least one more time so prolly a wise move to do a little “we see you”.
Yeah I mean it probably didn’t help in this case, I just gotta imagine they’d be hitting a flask or something if they weren’t drinking beer. Either way that’s definitely annoying and that’s definitely a valid time for security to get involved.@trixr4kids Probably true but they were double fisting the tall boys at the game as well.

Depends on how fast you drink them, and also, they were probably pre-gaming.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I absolutely love everything about this picture. So many stories told here alone. From the Michigan Daily
(love the reaction of the poor Michigan kid right behind the goal too).
