Cows fans whining about holding makes me laugh...
Gophs need to calm down.
Holy hell the penalty they called on Nelson was embarrassingly soft.
That was a nice dive by Pavel.
That was a nice dive by Pavel.
Must have learned that from Sandelin's dad's squad.
Every time they say "Furry" I giggle ?

I just said if that was my last name - I’d change it.
Sandelin 3-2.

They really like taco John’s here.
So wait...people are supposed to pay for this? Good god...
Game over, MSUM wins 3-2.

Do you think Pavel will dive in the handshake line? ?
Not much to say...lost a one goal game on the road. It happens.
Please God may I never watch this crappy broadcast again.
Split, and considering home and home, and a top ranked team, fine. I don't like it, of course, but it could be far, far worse. The killer, IMO, was not scoring on the major. That changed the game.
We have a week to think about it, and then come back with a vengeance against some team from North Datoka? Kadota? Something like that. 😉

22s got dirt on the coach.
I changed my last name on twitter to Brodzinski and 30 seconds later I had a scholarship offer for the fall.
Inexcusable turnover by Brodzinski on that last goal. Overall well played game they new it would be hard and performed well. Will be a hungry team heading into the North Dakota series.
Now what do I do for 2 weeks…
I think daddy has a lot to do with why 22 gets the ice time he does.
I hope that’s the last time I’ll have to watch a CCHATV game for a long time. Painful in many aspects.

It's a family thing.
Thoughts on Close tonight? Since I only listened to the game, it sounded like he was a bit off tonight. That said, I'm not blaming this game on him.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Close was fine.
Glad we’re done with Mankato so we can go back to watching hockey. I found it kinda odd they scheduled two soccer games in early October.
The one goal he didn't have a clue to where it was. Had no chance at the save. He played well. Mankato's goalie (Francier? something like that) has mad skills on the stick handling. Great poke checks in key situations.

The goal was a sweep. The team can content, not happy, with a split. The youngsters are growing up quick.
Content, yes, that would be the correct feeling. Wish they could have done more, but hey, these things happen.

Not remotely content after this.
We let it slip away. Extra week to rest and get ready for the whioux.
Unfortunately I was at a wedding I wasn’t able to watch. Good to see Nevers on the scoresheet. Snuggerud is a beast. From what I’m hearing we definitely could have won the game and we were in it the whole way? What happened on the third goal?
Pro is we beat a solid Mankato team last night in front of an energetic, if unfortunately not full, crowd. We then went toe to toe against them in Kato.
Cons, again, sounds like we definitely could have won tonight. Let’s call it a learning experience and not let it happen again.
In a weird way I’m glad we think we should have swept them. It’s a bitter pill to swallow but it means we’re getting better and better. Last year we probably would have taken the split with little complaints.
Let’s get everyone healthy and rested over the next two weeks and then let’s sweep the Hawks. If the hockey gods are listening, I’m ok with a split against Mankato if we’re playing the Battle Hymn of the Republic in two weeks.
It was toe-to-toe tonight, as expected. Given recent history, we did well. Could we have won? Yes. But a loss was not devastating.

Ugh. Fun game to be at. Was really hoping to shut their damn crowd up. The second call on Nelson was laughably bad. Brutal night for Brodzinksi. Disappointing outcome.
My thoughts:
After Mankato killed off the 5 min powerplay they became more physical and had more jump. It looked like Hastings and the Mavericks were treating this like a must win game and the Gophers were just rolling their four lines. Justin Close is an average college goalie, but with our Defense we have a decent shot to return to the Frozen Four.
PS: I do hate that OLE goal song Mankato plays ?
I wouldn't say we were in it til.the end...the team looked discombobulated most of the 3rd period. They got forced out of their game the last few minutes of the 2nd and to me never really regained it. I never thought they would get #3. YMMV
That said though they could have looked a lot worse. And Mankato was not really impressive.
I will take the results for now.
I don't think Close is "average" at all...
The 5 min major was the difference. The game changed after that.

Do you think he is above, or below…..average….???
Being at the game, I think the there was a very different “feel” being in a different arena. Our energy/dominance, what have you, seemed to wane as the game went on.
I hope lessons were learned tonight. The rest of the season does not get any easier.
I did hear mav fans around us commenting how much faster/better this Gopher team is, and I agree.
Best to get the tough losses out of the way now.
Great to see lots of Gopher fans in the house tonight. Please buy up any tix left for the next series. The less pioux, the better. ?
RTB, Ski-U-Mah GO GOPHERS!!!
Agree gophers' failure to collect a goal on the long PP got the cows back in the game. Gophers outplayed them badly until then. That's on MN. Can't miss on those opportunities.
The cows' entire strategy is to bang the puck into a scrum and home for a favorable rebound. Yawn. It took everything the Mavs had tonight to eke out a win against this young team.
It felt like MN let one get away tonight, but it's not a terrible thing to get handed a hard lesson early in the season. This team has a ton of upside.
What makes Close 'average"? He was 11th in the country last year for SV% at .925 and remember most of his games were the latter half the season meaning played in the meat grinder of trying to win the B1G regular season and all of the playoffs.
For comparison the greatest college goalie of all time McKay last year was .931 SV%. In case anyone wants to argue it's all because of the defense in front of them McKay faced 17.7 shots/gm vs. 22.4 for Close.
Before anyone freaks out I'm not saying Close is arguably at the top of the list in college hockey, but good Lord he's above average.
Refs took a nap for a minute...yeesh.
Yeah ultimately I won’t blame them for the loss or anything like that (gophers just outworked post long PP and outshot etc.) but I just get so annoyed at how games against that team get reffed. The frozen fours it was obvious they were never going to call anything and it played into their hands. Today I don’t think the reffing was uneven but it was just suspect all around. Their guy “accidentally” knocking the net off on a 3x1 (and to be fair Close did it later) or the moment you were talking about both come to mind. Nelson got hauled down early, Cooley got speared (they both went at it with stick work but spearing is a major penalty). Sadly this is probably better than the playoff reffing though where they just completely swallow their whistles for 60 mins as they at the very least didn’t do that the first half of the game.

They prob got outshot ~ 2:1 after that PP. And the play on the ice reflected it.
And yeah all the remarks about #22… can’t say I disagree. I’m fine with him being on one of the PP units with his shot but why he’s in the top 6 at even strength is a mystery.

I think people are kinda ignoring the stats because of the sample size, elite D, and a lot of games vs bad big ten teams but he seems like a good goalie. Dryden’s situation was even more enviable so that’s valid point. I certainly wouldn’t disagree with him being above average based on what we’ve seen so far and he had some nice saves to keep them in it this weekend. They certainly didn’t lose because of him today, he maybe could’ve done better on the last rebound but that’s possibly just due to fatigue in the second game of a back to back where his team was struggling.
And honestly I feel like the gophers are generally built to be a team that has the talent to supersede average goaltending. It’s not like this program has had a lot of NHL talent at that position over the years and they’ve been plenty successful.
Sucks to lose, but it's not like we got blown out and this whole weekend went about as well as we expected with youthful talent still very much proving itself versus experience missing key pieces from last year.
Though now we don't want MSUM to crap the bed until after the CCHA Playoffs.
Don't know if this was partially first road trip jitters, but if it was, just get it out of the system and fly into Columbus fully prepared in a few weeks.
My two biggest complaints about the broadcast were the crew's habit to talk subdued like they were covering a golf tournament, forcing me to raise the volume and make goals and commercial breaks loud AF, and the camera's jerky motion making me want to throw up almost literally, especially since I had just had the flu on Tuesday.

Justin Close, ever since tBob put him between the pipes, has clearly played at an above average level & is certainty the equal to Travis Weber (nobody should have forgot his name…albeit two decades later) ? A split with Mankato is fine at this stage of the season, at least they treated the faithful who showed up on Friday with a solid win over an in state team. This Gopher team is stacked on the blue line, but for all the talent, is still quite young up front. The HATED Whioux should provide a good test
A weekend split against number 5, losing on the road by 1 goal, we will be ok.
Not many teams sweep Mankato period, especially with the Saturday game at home. Felt like we really should’ve but oh well. Does anybody know the last time Mankato was swept with at least one of the games being played in kato?
I should not have commented my opinion that I believe Justin Close is "average". I still believe that, but I knew some would take offense to that opinion. Being "average" with the best defensive group in the country is just fine with me.
Overall a strong weekend for this young gopher team. They showed they can compete against a very very good mankota team. Each game this year I've noticed Cooley isn't afraid of taking the body, even against Lindenwood he was hitting everything that moved. In the 3rd period yesterday Pitlick twice avoided contact while racing for a puck after a gopher dump in.

They need to get him off the line with Knies. That isn’t going to work. And I’m completely baffled as to why Bob has him on the PK. So many better options.
I’d almost rather have Nevers on that line with Knies and Huglen. Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like his style of play could compliment the other two. The kind of goal he scored yesterday could work with Knies and Huglen. He also has plenty of experience playing with Knies after last year.
After the gophers 5 on 3 PP, it looked like mankato had a 5 on 3. Gophers could have used a timeout to compose themselves and try to kill the purple cow momentum
