Obviously with no idea what scholarship money looks like, but if Johnson comes back we might see Staudacher to portal. Getting Lacombe, Knies, Faber back is way more than I was expecting. Fired up for next season. Still would like to see us do something with goaltending. Where does Close rank in Big10 goalies?? I say probably 5th at best. We can do better.
I think Bob knows we need some grit on the backend, and Staudacher and Fish are the 2 guys that would provide that. If Johnson comes back, I could see the Gophers dressing 7 defensemen most games. It is funny that Bob praised Fish and said that he was close to cracking the lineup, and now may be buried down the depth chart.
I agree on the goalie situation. In my ideal world, I would love for Owen Bart... to go back to the USHL and be a starter for a year and return to the Gophers in 2023-24. That would then open up a spot for a goalie transfer, but they seem to be scooped up as soon as they enter the portal. I'm sure Close will be the starter, but would like to see another goalie get 25% to 30% of the action as well.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Who is top portal goalie left? Kucharski or St Cyr? Both of them are huge question marks.
Dream scenario is Commesso enters portal! Or Cavanaugh leave Uconn for BC and we can steal Russian kid from Tri City. BC already has a top goalie commit. I know unrealistic
I like the idea of Bart going back to juniors then coming in and being the guy. Boynton is supposedly a good option too, unless that (made up?) beef has any merit.
But it does feel good knowing we have a solid option with Close who will play consistent every night.
I think these guys smell a championship next season.
They'll need to stay hungry and healthy. I love the talent that is returning. Just hoping complacency doesn't set in during the season.
It will be like 14-15 when they are pre season favorites coming off of a Frozen Four. So yes, hopefully they have good leadership to prevent overconfidence.
Think it'd be super cool for Johnson to come back too but know we are already in bonus time with the bigger three back.
Has there ever been a Gopher hockey season where complacency hasn’t set in at some point?
19-20? Cause they were super sh*tty in the first half??
Who are some candidates to replace Raboin?
Weird, my post about Raboin disappeared. lets try this again.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Paul Martin would seem to be a potential replacement. Strobel just quit at wisconsin.
Possible candidates--
Martin
Strobel
Bickel
Some USHL asst coach with ties to Bob?
Bonin21 B-)

Can you imagine Bonin21 on the recruiting trail? He'd tell everyone to play for Michigan.

Steve Miller would be my top choice to replace Raboin.
Tony Gasparini was a name last time we had assistant open. Wonder if Motzko takes another run at him
Congrats to Garrett! He has put in the work as an assistant for a while and I wish him luck getting a D1 program up and running. I would think Martin could fill the role of assistant but I think where the rubber meets the road is recruiting. Could Martin recruit and evaluate prospects? Bickel is an intriguing person to fill the role, he has been a coach but has jumped around a lot in the last couple of years.

I’m not as plugged in as I used to be. Who is Steve Miller? I’m sure it’s not the Steve Miller that first pops into the mind of an old fart like me.
I imagine Strobel is a strong candidate. How much of the recruiting does he do, though? Who got K'Andre Miller?
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker...
Not not arguing for - I've never heard of the hockey guy.
Can we please get an LOL or MRGREEN smiley back?
[edit] oh ffs...
I try to reply to Iceberg's post and it won't let me submit.
Miller is Ohio State asst

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
It let me quote in the "Can't get logged in" thread. But I can't do it here.

EDIT. Still not letting me quote Iceberg's post.
Oooh... Just tried to quote Iceburg with this test account and it would not let me either.

Maybe I am blocked. LOL.
Good for Ben Brinkman. A Masters Degree from Notre Dame will look good on his resume.
If Lucius and Johnson come back, HOLY S*** it's going to be a long 5.5 months.
Looks like bad words are gonna go through on this board.
I could not quote the first 1 or 2 times I tried.
But can we agree that no one should go crazy when they lose a game or 2 and enjoy the ride?

But can we agree that no one should go crazy when they lose a game or 2 and enjoy the ride?
It will happen no matter what. Especially because they will likely have even more talent than this year's team. So if they lose a game to a team like Alaska again, people will be rightfully mad because the only excuse for that is poor effort.
And if they lose to MN teams, again I think it's fair because that frustration has been building up for years.
People like to vent their frustrations. In the end a 0-34 team can still win a title and our whining won't impact a thing. At least this place is not as bad as FB/Twitter, and I'm glad I avoid those places post game and in general (never made a FB and twitter is only used to read original posts from <50 accounts.
So it’s gonna be one of these coaching vacancy offseasons huh? I’ll start the unrealistic names list: Rob McClanahan?.
I'd prefer to have a D man coaching the D.
Things seem to be settling down player-wise, so here goes nothing. 2022-23 team in my eyes looks like:
Knies-Cooley-Snuggerud
Broz-Huglen-Kurth
Pitlick-Ch Lucius-Cr Lucius
Brodzinski-Nelson-Nevers
Johnson-Faber
Staudacher-LaCombe
Koster-Chesley
Mittelstadt
Close
Bartoskiewicz
Boynton
I don’t wanna put Nelson fourth line but I can’t really find anywhere else to put him. Also that top 9 is all underclassmen. Just realized that. Knies for Hobey.
I’d prefer to have a D man coaching the D.
To each their own?
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
That lineup looks good and obviously the 4th line can shuffle based on what Strobel/Pinoniemi show.
Also, pretty easy decision that if Johnson leaves you bring in Thomas. I think it might be good to have 9 D on the roster regardless because we've seen how easy it is to be down 3 D between WJC and injuries.
So it’s gonna be one of these coaching vacancy offseasons huh? I’ll start the unrealistic names list: Rob McClanahan.
Tony Dungy?
Faber is your captain. If Walker comes back it would have to be without the C.
Can you honestly say with a straight face that in any reality Bob would strip Sammy of the C
It should be a moot point
The players vote for the captains.
We always have to worry about early departures in the off season, but I admittedly didn't have an assistant coach on my bingo card. Raboin is official.
I hate seeing Raboin go, but that alone says a lot about what he's done for this program over the last few years.
As for the next assistant, the only two names thrown around so far that I know enough about to have real thoughts about are Martin and Strobel.
I know a couple of people already (loosely) compared Paul Martin's potential promotion to that of Grant Potulny's, but the circumstances here are quite different. IIRC Potulny had just been named a volunteer assistant when Mike Hastings left after one season to go back to Omaha to take the same job on Dean Blais' staff under a lot of speculation that tDon was becoming something of a hot potato (especially with John Hill around) and the fact Potulny was converted to a full time assistant in this situation didn't exactly help.
Paul Martin by contrast has been around here for awhile now and has proven his worth to tBob over the last two seasons, so there wouldn't be the same questions about whether or not he's ready. The concern I have is more about timing. For the first time in awhile, it feels like this program is on the path to a national championship in the near future due in no small part to what the departing assistant did and we might want someone with a long resume to maintain that trajectory. I'm sure Ben Gordon is ready to be tBob's second in command, but we'd still be taking on a new assistant with a lot to learn about the job, which wouldn't be a problem if we were to, say, poach a CCHA assistant who's a rising star instead. That's just a concern though and could only be in my head.
As far as Mark Strobel, harder to be certain since we don't really know the circumstances of his resignation whether he just felt it was time to move on, was forced out, fleeing a sinking ship, etc. I certainly like the idea of his coaching his nephew here and he already has a coaching resume, but tBob would have to be reasonably certain that he wasn't even in part the reason why Wisco didn't have much success during his tenure there outside of 2020-21 (which may have been a fluke) and that includes the 2019-20 season since their season was already over when things shut down. He did have success before his return to Madison though, so maybe tBob would see something that overshadows the struggles over the last few years.

I certainly like the idea of his coaching his nephew here
Why? Shouldn't be a factor in the decision
Because it gives him an additional reason to be invested in the program. Fans tend to like those kinds of connections around here. I do agree it shouldn't be a consideration in making the hire. It's simply something fans can say they like.
That and he might know how to unlock his nephew's full potential. Wouldn't be relevant in the longer term since the younger Strobel can only be here 4 years and, like Chill said, it shouldn't be something tBob should weigh, but it is something I personally like.

One of the last things you need on a team is the risk of nepotism. You just don't need that dynamic and the downfalls that go with it.
I am happy for Raboin but I am also happy for the Gopher program. The program is in a really good place and Motzko should be able to get a high quality new assistant to keep things fresh.
