Mystery Candidate
Matt Cullen
Best case he will be around anyway.
So now we watch who Jan Brady hires so we know who our next coach will be 10 years from now.CHN is saying it's going to be Larson and will be announced in the next few days.

I’m putting all my chips in the middle April fools day.
“Good pace, a lot of north and south, or it could be east and west, I’m not sure but either way…” Wooger
I heard the mystery candidates are @jupiter and @eric-vegoe
Uh oh what official report do I let tell me what to think now
Exactly.
This whole exercise seems disconnected. Or maybe the confusion is that Grant and Larson will both be on the staff lol (joking). Hmmm, actually maybe that’s a possibility (GM/Coach)
Feels like we’re pressing so hard just to hire before the portal date.

given the portal doesn't open until april 13th, they're way ahead of that timeline

rumor is he's a shoe in for a joint role between Michigan and BU
“Mystery candidate” has to be Raboin, right?

I'd be thrilled if it was, but I just don't see him back pedaling off what was reported last week. Could we be wrong? 100%. Would I be thrilled if we were? yes, but I just don't see it.
I asked my Magic 8-Ball, "Is Don Lucia the mystery candidate?" and...

There are better options than Grant, hell even Larson would be a better option and I already explained why I'm not impressed with his resume. If Potulny doesn't get this job. I am done with the U.
The hire of the new Women's coach itself is underwhelming!!!
Take a chance DUDE!!!
Show your Maroon & Gold spirit.
QoGH
Either way I'm a little more encouraged that it sounds like the search has expanded.

So you are going to throw away decades of being a Gopher Hockey fan because they didn't hire someone you wanted? That seems a bit extreme. Lucia wasn't a Maroon and Gold guy, and he worked out well. I have my preferences, but I will support whomever they hire.

...or at least wait until he falls on his face.
I have no way of knowing if Potulny would make a good coach or not. Fans thought a lot of him as a captain, and he nailed press interviews speaking more like a coach than a player.
Times sure have changed. I remember once when the AD thought it would be a good idea to hand over the keys to a high school coach from South Saint Paul.
One of my dogs disappeared downstairs for a bit earlier today, might have been interviewed on my work computer. I wouldn’t mind if she was hired, actually. Upbeat and positive, but doesn’t have time for nonsense, either. At least that’s what the look on her face when I fake throwing the ball says.

We could use a little more of that Herb Brooks "Again" mentality if you ask me

It would probably cut down on your food/vet bills as well. I see this as a win/win, U has a great nutrition and training staff.

As fun as it is to dream of Ferschweiler taking the job, why would he ever leave WMU

if you ever needed to tell alumni to write checks, this is the type of guy you do it for.

money and prestige.
tbh he's one I would've thought wouldn't want to leave, but if WMU isn't willing/able to pony up to make him one of the highest paid coaches in college hockey, I'm very ok with the U being willing to do so. The salaries in college hockey are going to go up, and already have significantly in the B10

tbh i have no idea how they would know that, but again if that's the case you beat down the doors of your alumni to make that happen from a donation for his buyout standpoint if you're an AD that's at all worth his salt.

WMU is not Denver, the Gophers pretty clearly have a better program pre-Ferschweiler.
why would he ever leave WMU
I think a lot of the cyclical nature of programs like Western gets lost in these discussions. As disgruntled as we may have been with recruiting over the last 2ish years, since this summer we've been back to pulling in guys that might end up as first round picks. Programs like Western historically do not follow that same trend.
Do you think Ferschweiler wants to wait out potential bust years in an ever-difficult recruiting landscape? Or do you think he goes aggressive, makes a move to a program with (presumably anyways) more resources and chases the dragon with higher end talent at his disposal on a yearly basis?
Him staying would be a fine move, and admirable given his ties to Western. But making a move to Minnesota shouldn't be out of the question.
Time will tell!

I would take back everything I said about Coyle. Might even get a "In Mark We Trust" tattoo.

Pat is stating "not true". Is he that connected or how should I take his comment? I respect his work----but I really have no idea.
Yeah you make a good point, Western might give him a long leash given expectations based on their resources and competition, you could kinda see how it might be lower stress. But if things slide the wrong direction for long enough who knows, he also has to compete against not only the NCHC teams for recruits but also the B1G schools within the state and to a lesser extent the CCHA teams. Coaches tend to have egos and are willing to bet on themselves as well especially if that comes with a pay bump and a better recruiting talent base to draw from so it's not like there's zero appeal to coming here.why would he ever leave WMU

No idea if it's actually going to happen and if I had to guess he probably stays but you gotta imagine he at least thinks about it.

i believe Pat on this, considering 1. he’s usually the delusional optimist around the program and 2. Coyle consulted him and Nanne etc. when the search was starting
Nanne on with Barreiro at 5:30 on KFAN. Guessing this will be touched on and Louie is usually an open book.

I agree with you on #1, but on #2, I assume Coyle consulted a number of people (some younger people than Pat and Louie would be nice), and they hopefully gave him a diversity of opinions, so Pat may not hold the opinion chosen by Coyle....admittedly, none of us know.

Motzko was paid $750,000 per season. Ferschweiler was paid $420,000.
I have read online that his buyout is $2.29 million which is a huge value and might make it totally cost prohibitive to lure him away. I think they would have to touch $1 million with additional significant off-ice revenues to make him even consider it while simultaneously paying the vast bulk of the buyout.
But compared to Western Michigan, Minnesota should have the pockets to go deep and make financial considerations a meaningless issue. But, in the end I doubt it. Our sports community is minor leagues compared to other colleges.

Lou not overly exciting of an interview though sure makes it seem like he feels we’ve interviewed who the new HC is.
It would be very like Youth Hockey Hub to post that Fersch nugget for clicks so I won’t believe anything til I see it. I will say this though, the longer this drags out the more it looks like they’re waiting for someone’s season to end in the NCAA’s.
If we don’t have a coach by this time tomorrow there may be some credence to it.

the direct money in ticket sales and TV revenues, and lifetime value of re-energized alums that the Gophers’ men’s hockey program makes off every single Frozen Four run should make the slam-dunk business case for sparing no expense on this hire. At least, that’s what I’m hoping…
As fun as it is to dream of Ferschweiler taking the job, why would he ever leave WMU
Huh?
he’s a WMU alum, just signed a contract extension, has a very fancy new building on the way that his fingerprints are all over, consistently wins over there, he basically has the keys to Kalamazoo for life now.
Does Russo moonlight at Larson's agent?
