i hope we start doing a hockey combine where we have guys skate a full length of the ice as fast as they can and we start recruiting guys exclusively based on that skating time
While listening to various podcasts and reading a few articles the last few days, here are a couple of things I hope people will remember about Bob.
-- The fact Bob and his family gave away money to students in honor of Mack during one of the years.
-- The road trips to outstate Mn to practice during bye weeks. Austin and Rochester stands out.
-- The times on trips up north he would stop to visit various towns, including Eveleth to see Mayasich.
-- The fact he took time to meet with STH for coaches talk.
-- The skits he did with John King ice fishing. I think it was called Bevvy with Bob.
These are just a few of the small things he did to promote the Gophers program. Let's hope the next coach continues some of the traditions Bob has started.

To me that’s overcorrecting. You just need someone who’s is willing to make the effort up there. It’s only ever going to be 2-3 guys on your roster max that a true Canadians that have no time playing any sort of US. Juniors.
two things that hopefully help us:
1) I think this was said, but having current recruits sent north of the border will help get you in front of some of these guys naturally and players are recruiting each other more and more nowadays. 2) They need the GM position. It just makes too much sense to have someone dedicated to roster management full time.

I think the bread and butter at a place like Minnesota is going to be supplementing with CHL players, which I don't know that a WHL/OHL pedigree coach (whoever it may be, I don't know names) gives you a leg up from anyone else in those circumstances.
I imagine the relationship between the NHL and WHL is a bit different in comparison to what the NCAA has too, which could be a hinderance.

Bob did talk with Jim Rich leaving the rink yesterday.
Bob is a class act. Just because the landscape changed and he may have been past wanting to change with it doesn’t discount that he was a great coach. He should be remembered for a lot of great things he did for the program. He was the right hire 8 years ago.

Exactly. Not to mention, the Alumni can play an important role and I doubt you would find many who would support a hire like this. MN produces enough quality talent to make up most of the team. CHL and other states shouldn't need to make up more than 25% or so of roster if recruiting in MN is successful. If they had a Canadian coach and ended up with mostly Canadian players, it would end my 45+ yrs of watching the Gophers.
And yes, I believe over that 45+ yrs, the 2023 team had the most talent I ever saw on a Gopher team, probably for any college team, for that matter. Maybe the best D corp top to bottom. (Although I wouldn't put the 2023 first line above the Brotens-Erickson line.)

really good pod and enjoyed Cappy's insights as well (ranging from the 23 game as well as his thoughts on some of the roster this year which also included some lol type comments. The stuff on the student broadcasters at the end is hilarious).
also some really interesting stuff on Bob's comments towards what needed to be done this offseason (also in Wodon's CHN article on it) and it seems like all, Bob included, were in agreement that the roster will need to have plenty of difficult conversations and some speculation that this may be easier for someone outside to do, which I can see.

Alum with a bachelor’s degree, a demonstrated commitment to yelling strongly worded and concise “communications” at the TV during 3rd periods which the team can probably hear from several states over, and 587 posts on this board where I actively discuss systems and NCAA/B1G rules with fellow subject-matter experts.
sidenote: they also posted the Assistant Coach and Director of Hockey Ops roles today. If they’re planning to keep some of them, like say Martin, is it just a bureaucratic formality that they’re making them reapply? Or is this an indication that they plan on fully clearing the way for whoever to bring in their own guys? If they hire me, I’ll have a few posters on my shortlist for those vacancies too

Hopefully that’s just preliminary and they eventually get around to Barr, unless he’s just not interested or something. Not saying he has to be the guy but it’d be kinda negligent to not at least interview him.
my take? First of all, it’s ambiguous. Let’s see a contract extension signed in ink before panicking. Second, it could just be hopeful wishcasting by the Augustana AD. Lastly, it was reported earlier today that Rabs would be interviewing with Coyle over this weekend. All said, best to wait for more information.
Now that Raboin is out of the picture Barr should get much more play. Larson does very little for me but is a good safety net.

What’s wrong with Larson? Not many coaches out there that have been to a National Championship game. Maybe the program needs an NCHC guy. Only conference consistently winning National Championships.

It’s just HR language. They’re not gonna actually give, like, AIC’s head coach for example a shot. Then if you look at names like Greg Brown, why would they ever leave their sweet gigs at places they love/graduated from? I guess if they do give the Dartmouth guy or Barr a call, that’d be a true national search.
2nd tweet in this thread says another source confirmed that Rabs declined. If true, I really question the judgements of all involved…
Not sure Larson would even be better than Potulny and that’s saying something 😆. Only reason I can think of trying to get him would be they think he has some connection to the northern part of the state that UMD typically dominates… but then you’d think he’d have shown some success with that at SCSU (which… they haven’t made the tourney for 3 years).
If Coyle screws this up he’s likely fast tracking himself out of a job, this is quite literally the easiest aspect of it.

that’s what baffles me. Maybe he doesn’t want to be under the microscope as the head coach of the Gophers; but if so, why was he here before acting as one of the faces of the program in many ways? There’s no way Augustana is outbidding us monetarily.
Further, I’ll note that Tyden Bergeson (Mr. Hockey this year, Auggie commit) just started following the Gophers and future of pride on ice on Instagram or Twitter (I forget which); seems like a lot of fog of war going on right now

It’s not just that tweet, it’s also Jup confirming that two sources say Raboin declined. So let me get this straight, he was interested enough to interview, but after the interview he declined? What the hell did Coyle do in that interview? Pull down his pants and tell him to kiss it?
