Ugh what a disaster
sconnie put up 4 unanswered on these guys. We can too. Pretty goal by Huglen
Minnesota isn't playing like they could put up 4 unanswered goals on a girls' high school team right now. I don't see them waving a magic wand between periods.
I get that teams have bad games but the only way they erase this mail-in job is a win tomorrow.
Good teams can be beat, but 1-5 after 2 against a team outside the bubble? That's unacceptable.

I saw the goal and got hopeful. I am no longer hopeful. I am in pain
It's *ING EMBARRASSING!
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
physical mistakes can always be forgiven, but Rinzel's decisions were selfish and irresponsible.Does Bob sit Snuggerud and Rinzel for the whole 3rd period?
I would. Leaders lead and the team is following Snuggys example. Rinzel needs to know the plays he’s made are unacceptable.
Honestly, if they sat the guys who didn't show up tonight, they'd have maybe 8 to 9 players who could play.
Why does Notre Dame have a power play
Notre Dame scored 4 goals in a period so we can too.
I am not giving up. If some of the teams better players start playing better they can gain some momentum.
Bischel has been outstanding in the 3rd period.
Looks like they started believing the hype instead of going out and living up to it.
…They got Culvers…
Echoing what many have said but too many of our shots tonight haven’t made Bischel really work or even really break much of a sweat.
They’ve had a couple of bounces go their way and we’ve completely folded. That said, take nothing away from Notre Dame. They got a lead and didn’t look back. Defended well, got great goaltending, and took their chances when presented. It’s what I was hoping I could say about the Gophers.
Gophers playing to save face, but this is the worst performance by the forwards in the second half this season.
They had no interest in playing defense tonight, and Rinzel was right there with them.
Rinzel strikes again
Bavaro 6-1, PPG.

That’s a penalty? Notre Dame is holding, clutching, grabbing, and interfering with our players all night and the refs call that. It doesn’t matter much at this point but still.
It's time for Rinzel to tip toe out of the rink.
On the bright side, the Chicago GM at the game will insist that Rinzel come back next year.

This conference has the best goalies! (Gee I wonder why 😂)That’s a penalty? Notre Dame is holding, clutching, grabbing, and interfering with our players all night and the refs call that. It doesn’t matter much at this point but still.
Hopefully Strobel plays tomorrow night. If they get smoked again they are right back on the bubble.
Game over, Notre Dame wins 6-1.

This game alone might keep him a Gopher for 3 years lol.
We’ll get a real good look at what the leadership group on this team has in them tomorrow night and that’s what will decide on if they’ve got a chance to be there in the end
Nelson's line looked like they were coming on, but tonight they were flat out awful. As old as they are, they should be ones grinding it out.
There's been a lot of talk about Motzko saying they need a rest. Sounds like a post hypnotic suggestion and maybe the message should have been different.
the fourth line was about the only bright spot tonightHopefully Strobel plays tomorrow night. If they get smoked again they are right back on the bubble.

The 4th line was the best line tonight. Unless you want to bench someone else.

Good time to do this…
On to tomorrow.
Woof.
Hopefully Strobel plays tomorrow night. If they get smoked again they are right back on the bubble.
they’ll probably end up right around 10-11 if they lose again. Effectively like splitting both PSU and ND. But means they’ll absolutely need a result vs Michigan after the bye if they lose

There is a definite gap between #9 Gophers and the bubble #12/#13. The Gophers losing tomorrow would likely keep them at #9.
There were quite a few top teams across the country who struggled tonight. Bad games happen even for good teams.
Over the past 11 games the Gophers have proven who they were tonight is not who they are.
The past 11 games they gave up 16 goals total (1.45 goals per games). The past 5 games they gave up 3 goals total (0.60 goals per game).
At least nobody got injured (to our knowledge). Regroup and win tomorrow.
The 3rd line was on the ice for 3 of Notre Dame's 5 even strength goals.
The 1st line was on the ice for 2 of Notre Dame's 5 even strength goals.
The 4th line was the best line tonight and while the Senior line didn't have a great offensive game at least they kept the puck out of their net.
With Huglen getting a goal the 1st and 3rd lines were both -2 tonight.
Rinzel obviously has an awful night but is still +15 which is best among defensemen. Thomas is 2nd at +11.
Moore leads the team at +19 with Brodzinski and Pitlick tied for 2nd among forwards at +9.
They can't win them all, but please just win the last one in St. Paul

UND getting rolled by CC. Their season is probably over (/s) and will also help the gophers
They play two games a week 😂Nelson's line looked like they were coming on, but tonight they were flat out awful. As old as they are, they should be ones grinding it out.

I mean Bob wouldn’t say it if it didn’t mean something. He’s generally been pretty open and honest
I believe he said getting a mental break will be good for the team.
We sometimes forget they do have school work to do too.
Crumple this one up and throw it in the trash. Get the split tomorrow and right the ship.
Fair enough, the problem was that they looked like they were physically tired which doesn’t really make sense. I get that the mental side of things in college can be a lot for a number of reasons, I just wonder if a week off is going to help more than it hurts (in the past Motzko has complained about too many breaks too).
Whatever, just win tomorrow and hopefully the break helps.
I blame the white jerseys on the road. And the lucky charms.
I was relying on descriptions from Wally and Frank, but it certainly felt like one of those games where while the team physically made it down to South Bend, mentally the bus may have broken down somewhere in rural Wisconsin and we gave up all the goals we could have last weekend.
As much as we wanted the sweep, getting the split is good enough to guarantee that we finish ahead of the Irish.

Gonna recycle and old joke:
What was the difference between a bucket of sh* and the Gophers tonight?
The bucket.
That being said, let's crush 'em tomorrow, and flex, and show them who we are.

Coach's biggest problem with the first round bye in the playoffs the past two seasons was that it was then followed up by at most a single game the next two weeks with the Big Ten semifinal and final being a week apart.
This results in either one or two games (depending on if you win the semifinal game) in the 25/26 days leading into a single elimination NCAA tournament where rust could end your season quickly.
Last year our last regular season game was Saturday Feb 25th, Big Ten semifinal game Saturday March 11, Big Ten championship game Saturday March 18th, first round NCAA game Thursday March 23rd.
The year before it was our last regular season game Saturday Feb 26th, Big Ten semifinal game Saturday March 12th, Big Ten championship game March 19th, first round NCAA game Friday March 25th.
This year since we will be playing in the first round of the Big Ten playoffs having a mental break before playing the last regular season series and then a best of three first round playoff series could end up being good.
Bottom line in a 7 team conference byes are a necessary evil so coach is just trying to say that having the bye next week so we still have a regular season series to get ready for the start of the playoffs is not all bad.
BTW, I don't think tonight's performance was about being tired. It was a case of quite a few guys who have been playing well not playing well tonight. I suspect they will be better tomorrow.
The team has had three bad games this season the first game at home against Wisconsin, the second game at Penn State, and tonight. In all three of these games they got some good scoring chances but couldn't get the lead and then had some defensive break downs that cost them. These three games were game 5, game 16 and game 31 so they don't happen frequently.
Every team has some clunkers even good teams. Look at North Dakota losing 7-1 tonight.
The other 5 losses where all basically one goal games (2 of the 5 ended up as two goal loses due to empty net goals). One goal games often are games of inches with shots hitting the posts so whether we win by a goal or loss by a goal I try not to draw much conclusion from them. Although, obviously wining one goal games is a lot more fun than losing them.
We need to win tonight. Convincingly.
That is all.
@collegehockeyaddict Agreed. We also don’t have insights into if there’s any sickness that the team if facing. Lots of crud going around right now unfortunately so who knows. Sometimes when players appear to be struggling it’s due to being ill and as fans we just expect and hope for better results (all the time).
might also be what Bob alluded to. Maybe there’s some guys not at 100%.
I guess we’ll see based on tonight’s game and if they appear to bounce back.
Time for the leaders to rise up either way
Last night was so bad that I wasn't even upset by it. Snuggy and Pitlick were horrible in the first 2 periods, before the benching. Snuggy was just gliding around out there. Not scoring is in his head that it is affecting his play. The top line played better in the 3rd, but too little, too late.
The thing I really noticed is that the Gophers spacing was not good last night. On offense, they seemed to have guys too close to each other and they were too easy to cover. On defense, when they rushed the puck, they never had someone backing them up, and turned the pucks over way too easily and multiple times the defensemen kept running into the back of their own teammate. It's bad when Begley and Fish were not the 2 worst defensemen on the ice.
I expect a much better effort tonight after a nice long video session this morning. I hope Snuggy gets an easy one so the flood gates open for him again.
