Pretty dominant performance other than one really bizarre mistake to gift OSU their second goal. Great result against a good opponent and good to see some of the guys who were struggling get back on track this weekend.
I believe we control our destiny and hopefully they keep it rolling, I’d like to see is host another B1G championship game 😎
The Gophers are 4-1-1 over their last 6 games out scoring their opponents 23-12. All four wins were by 3 goals. Yes there was some empty net goals but all but one of them were when we were already up by two goals.
The only lose was on the road against #12 Michigan in OT on a 4 on 3 power play goal off an "interesting" call by the refs especially after missing a Michigan penalty right before the call on the Gophers.
SWEEEEP. Well done Gophs, awesome weekend of hockey!
Souliere had a bad game but the team picked it up.
Huglen had a great game. Most important player on the ice tonight.
Which Gopher made that boneheaded pass near his own blue line. He was near the boards and could have skated it out but instead inexplicably passed it to the center of the rink where it was intercepted and ended up in the net. On tv all I could tell was that he was a right hander.
Souliere had a bad game but the team picked it up.
Souliere made some KEY saves in the 1st & 2nd to keep the momentum for the Gophers. He had a solid game and everything I read in your posts is negative garbage. Get back in that Lazyboy and tell us more about the game, Karen 🤣
The Gophers are 22-4 in games decided in regulation 13-3 in the Big Ten.
The Gophers are 1-3-4 in OT 1-2-3 in the Big Ten. Yes 3 on 3 OTs and shootouts impact conference standings but they are rather fluky and obviously not how playoff hockey is played.
Anything can happen in one and done tournaments but I like our chances as much as anybody in the playoffs because of our 22-4 record in games decided by normal hockey.
#1 Boston College is 21-6 in games decided by normal hockey.
#2 Michigan State is 19-5 in games decided by normal hockey.
#4 Maine is 17-5 in games decided by normal hockey.
#5 Western Michigan is 18-4 in games decided by normal hockey.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Random Question: Where / When / Why did playing the Battle Hymn become a tradition after home sweeps?

lol go watch the goals and tell me which one he should stop. give OSU some credit. When we gave them chances, which luckily were few, they picked corners
tOSU was going Rasputin on the bit. They just wouldn't die. Credit to them, indeed.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
So cool they showed the whole senior celebration after the game on the tv broadcast.
For those who were not at the game, @jupiter captured Aaron Huglen's mom singing the National Anthem.

Agree Souliere had a good game. The team got a little sloppy in the third and was lucky to have a goal called back after a replay off sides. They've had a tendency all season to let down after a goal, and they need to figure that out.
Souliere is a smallish goaltender and a little vulnerable on the upper corners but he's played better than Airey and deserves the starts. I like his confidence in goal.
Overall, that was a solid game with a great start, good goaltending, and a strong response after OSU clawed back.
@thebirdman The Battle Hymn after sweeps goes back well into days of the old barn. Goldy used to stand above the opponents net on his balcony/perch and wave the broom over the opposing goalies head. The band would start playing a certain tune/intro with 30 seconds left in the game and get everyone whipped up into a frenzy. They would start the Battle Hymn after the final seconds ticked away.
At some point in the mid to late 90's, the band was told they weren't allowed to start playing "during" the game so now they wait until the final buzzer to go into the Battle Hymn. However, it's still pretty common for older fans to stand/start the sweep chant with 30 seconds left in regulation. I've even noticed some students do it, which is awesome.
I know there are a couple 'rules". It has to be a clean sweep. If a game goes to OT and we win it, it doesn't count as a clean sweep and you won't hear the Battle Hymn.
I've been going to games since I was a kid and now I bring my son. It brings me great joy to watch him (12 years old) start the sweep chant with 30 seconds left. The band was so fired up after the sweeps of Michigan, Wisconsin and even Ohio State this year!! You can tell it still means a lot to them as well.
Question for the group: Can anyone remember what the band used to play with 30 seconds left in the game to get everyone fired up for a sweep before the Battle Hymn started?
Is there a video clip to last nights Senior tribute?
Aloha!
The first two periods on Saturday were about as perfect as the Gophers could play. I was mostly impressed with how many board battles we won. It seemed like every time the puck got stuck along the boards, we came away with the puck. If that type of aggressiveness continues, it’s bad news for everyone else.
@uofmpuckhead I thought, and I could be wrong on this, that the NCAA discourages having the band play during play now, so I think that is why they have to wait until the final horn. It is odd that Michigan is allowed to use those damn cowbells all during the game though.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
That MI cowbell is indefensible. It serves no useful purpose to generate enthusiasm for the team and falls on the ear like a dripping faucet.
Is that someone in their band?

Not 100% sure that it is the band. I always thought so. I'm sure @cowgirl would have a better idea since she was there a week ago.
They seem to use it as a countdown during the PK or PP as well. It is annoying as hell.

Can confirm it was not a band member at Yost but students in the section next to them running the damn cowbell. We thought about writing “less cowbell” on a sign but we’re pretty sure that would have only served to create the opposite effect. 😂
Wisconin’s band has always been pretty good at using their drums during play (when they are on a power play especially) which is annoying.
I thought the NCAA had a “rule” of instruments… cowbells, drum, horns or whatever being played or used during play.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Pretty cool to have the Huglen baby out there for Senior Night.
One more quick sidenote to the "Battle Hymn" post from above..
The Gophers would only do a stick salute after a sweep, which made it even more
special to see. Whether the games were on KITN or MSC, fans would would give
the station hell if they didn't show the entire post game battle hymn, rouser and
stick salute to the end. I know FSN didn't do a good job of it, but I can remember
Lapanta making a comment that they would show it after a commercial break, but
it was never live.
Now you see most hockey teams do a stick salute after every game, even if they
get pasted by six goals. Not quite as special in my opinion, but it's just how the game
has changed.
I thought the NCAA had a “rule” of instruments… cowbells, drum, horns or whatever being played or used during play.
Cowbells are allowed. MTU fans carry the rulebook with them just in case security tries to bust them.
Edit: so are kazoos, and those who made the MN @ MTU series a few years back.

This is the first time I recall seeing girlfriends on the ice.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I think girlfriends are not typical. Huglan is MARRIED and has a very new daughter. He was the best Gopher on the ice last night without question in my opinion. The team played like they NEED to play every. Single. Game. from here one out. There can be no let down or off periods. Tournament style boys. They played very hard this weekend and really could have had more goals but they need to expect that going forward. Drive the net, nothing cute, and clean up the play in our end = winning formula

I'm not saying if allowing girlfriends is typical or not at other programs, but Bob or the U has allowed girlfriends to be part of the ceremony the past few years. Bob has loosened up some of the norms the past few years and that includes allowing higher player numbers and allowing them to pick out alt jerseys. Bob seems to be doing things to evolve with the times.

The MSU series was far more concerning than the Michigan series that should’ve ended up in a split at worst. The Gophers are 4-1-1 over their last 6 games out scoring their opponents 23-12. I will say the reffing this weekend was significantly better than that series and some of the others we’ve seen (Michigan series lol). They actually called most of the obvious penalties for once it seemed like.
I thought the NCAA had a “rule” of instruments… cowbells, drum, horns or whatever being played or used during play.
I sat next to the WI band one year and asked them about the rule that the band can’t play during play.
they do play through their entire power play.
The kid shrugged it off and said they just do it anyway. If NCAA or B1G isn’t going to stop Wisconsin then I say we play the battle hymn during play….and restart that tradition vs Wisconsin. If the B1G stops the Gopher band they’ll also have to stop the Wisconsin band.

Thanks for the info @frozen4champs... I've just never noticed or missed it. As the Motzko... I agree, he seems to let the simple things in life go. I almost guarantee, with his son passing, he looks at life a whole other way and has loosened up the reins. I feel for the guy and hold his family deeply to my heart and prayers.

For those who have been to Mich. Tech/Houghton knows their bang plays a tune on the pk. It annoying and I haven't been to Houghton in over 10 years and the tune is still stuck in my head. So "if" Minnesota would play anything (doubt it would ever happen, too many powers to be and 'class'.) it has to be something unique and catchy.
Keep your stick on the ice...
For the most part I Agree with this statement. Overall a well officiated series with one glaring exception: Not calling the trip on tOSU player that sent Rinzel flying over the blue line in the first period in Saturday's game. Other than that, solid effort. The MSU series was far more concerning than the Michigan series that should’ve ended up in a split at worst. The Gophers are 4-1-1 over their last 6 games out scoring their opponents 23-12. I don't believe Minnesota was called for a penalty on Saturday.
You believe correctly. Definitely a solid showing by the stripes this weekend. There were a few calls I didn't like, but, I have to admit I'm not the most unbiased on this front. Given some of the games we've suffered through the past couple years, though, this was a good weekend for them.

Who made you the arbiter of what fans can and cannot say and/or feel on a public message board you don't run?
And if Airey had the game Souliere had plenty of people around here would be ripping him. Nothing about Souliere's performance was all that great. It was fine but he wasn't exactly Ken Dryden out there.
@upnorthkid 2 and 3
bar down far post after snuggy inexplicably turns it over? He's maybe 3 inches too far to the boards which is a fair critique, but that's a long way from a soft goal.
the 3rd goal they shoot between Koster's legs as he is pushed down from behind.
He was solid, not spectacular, and far from bad.
Couple of interesting stats from Saturdays game.. Oliver Moore won 19/24 face offs while the team went 38/66 as a whole. Erik Pahlsson only had 8:45 of ice time. Did he go out with an injury? Great day on the dot for Ollie and the team.
If Airey was in they probably lose lol. I hope he gets better and I don’t think he’s a horrible goalie but Souliere has been an above average goalie this year and Airey hasn’t.Souliere had a bad game but the team picked it up.

Bob dressed him as the 13th forward. He played on the 2nd PP unit and he rotated with Falloon on Huglan - Lamb line as a winger.

So 19/42 from everyone else? Moore needs to put on a clinic in practice.
