Michigan State was #6 going into the weekend. Were top 10 in the country in scoring. They had won 8 of their last 9 games. The lost was 4-3 at Penn State (who was Pairwise #1 until just now when the Gophers took #1 from them) when the Nittany Lions turned around a 3-2 deficit by scoring two goals in the last 6 minutes of the game. The next night Michigan State put a beat down on Penn State 7-3.
Then a pack of Gophers paid them a visit and outscored them 11-3 to get the road sweep.
Game over, Gophs win 6-3.

What a fun weekend! Keep it rolling into next weekend!
Perfect weekend from a coaching perspective. Get to see 5 periods of how good it can look when everyone does their job, but also get to go after them for the last 20 minutes of guys running around clueless.

Glory.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Ohio State won tonight to get a split at Penn State (Michigan and Wisconsin also split this weekend) so the Gophers gained ground on everybody in the conference this weekend and now our 5 points ahead of second place Penn State with the same number of games played.
Knies or Faber’s?
Saw they gave it to Faber, but I was sure it went off of #89's stick.
Just went back and looked at the replay. It was Faber's goal. Puck never got to Knies and went off of Underwood's skate.

But since they gave up 3 goals in the 3rd period coach has something to get on them about. ?
If MSU is the second best team in the Big Ten then the Big Ten sucks. (they aren't but still) Good god they are boring.
For all the hype about how "improved" they are they look like the same ole MSU team to me. Reminds me of most of the Ron Mason teams...lots of boring slog hockey (with a dead arena...Munn's crowd is pathetic) hoping to get a couple gift goals and have a goalie stand on his head. We already have one Penn State we don't need a second. (and PSU does it better)
I wonder if Cardinal still thinks this team is headed for a disaster like he predicted last year after we lost to Michigan in the BTTG. ?
Yep, that's what happened. Good work by the arena crew on that.Just went back and looked at the replay. It was Faber's goal. Puck never got to Knies and went off of Underwood's skate.
And a great weekend from the Gophers. They let off the gas a bit too much in the 3rd period and gave up 3 goals as a result, but they still beat what I think was the highest scoring team in the nation 5-0/6-3. That's 2 road sweeps in Michigan on this road trip. Excellent work for the B1G standings and the PWR come the end of the year.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
The MSU band plays the Dudley Doo-Right theme a lot and that is fricking awesome.

The Gophers are scary good they make other good teams look bad.
It's like when people said why are hitters always in a slump when facing Sandy Koufak? ?
There were no penalties by either team this weekend. Do we know for sure the guys on the ice were actual refs and not just some random people wearing their clothes? ?
So no one gets fired this week on the Gophers? ?
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
This has got to be the deepest/most talented gopher hockey team I’ve ever watched. The back to back years (and anything before) were before my time so I’m not saying all time or anything but since I started watching in 2006 this team is up there. When you have guys like Nevers and Nelson contributing consistently that helps a lot and guys like Huglen could heat up at some point.Fire looks lit. This team is scary when they’re on
There just wasn't much that could have been called a penalty, and from what I saw (admittedly, I was listening on radio more than watching closely on TV) there were only a couple plays all weekend that maybe should have been called. Nothing close to a dangerous hit, and nothing that gave any actual advantage. There were maybe one or two trips either way that could legitimately have been called, but the refs just let the teams play. I don't like "let them play" when the penalties that are being ignored actually make a difference. If someone is possibly tripped, but that's away from the puck and nothing in the play changes, though? Let it go and move on.There were no penalties by either team this weekend. Do we know for sure the guys on the ice were actual refs and not just some random people wearing their clothes? ?

I hear what you are saying. My post wasn't meant to be critical it was just me being silly.

This team is similar to the 2002 team. Tons of talent and (at least for this team) 3 guys on the backend that will play in the NHL. The 2002 team though might have had less overall top end talent but their grit factor was off the friggin charts. The sophomores that year were one of the best classes in Gopher Hockey History and that is saying something.
I am not saying this team will win it all, but I would not be surprised if they made a heckuva run at it if only because the D puts them in position to have post season success even if the high draft picks have a couple off games.
On most Big Ten teams, is Matt Staudacher the 3rd-4th defenseman?
Is Mason Nevers the most improved player in NCAA hockey?
They do need to stop some of the slop play they get into and let the other team get momentum. I think this has been a feature in some games this season, often just for jsut a few minutes.

There was a few things I saw that were probably penalties, but nothing super egregious. Maybe if MSU had put more pressure on and forced some action the refs may have given them the benefit of the doubt at home, but even when they got sustained pressure they never really made the Gophers have to take a penalty ya know? The refs had no reason to really insert themselves in the game. (and I dont mean "insert" in a bad way, I am not against refs making calls)
Mason Nevers....when he was a FR I was scratching my head thinking why.
Few years later there is a reason I'm in the stands and polluting the internet.

Motzko must have missed Jess in the media scrum post game this weekend.
I'm not against refs making calls, when they're warranted. Everything that I saw fell into the category of "hmm, was that a penalty?" and my default with that is, if you're not sure if it was a penalty, don't call it. Just a weird weekend where there really wasn't anything that should have been called. At first I thought MSU should have been called for goalie interference, but as soon as I saw the replay, I knew that the ref (who had a much better angle on in than the live TV view) made the right decision. The MSU player was pushed into Close (on a clean push/hit) by a Gopher, so, correctly, he didn't call anything. There just wasn't much that could have been called a penalty, and from what I saw (admittedly, I was listening on radio more than watching closely on TV) there were only a couple plays all weekend that maybe should have been called. @handyman The 2001-02 defense was better. Leopold, Martin, and Ballard had 38 goals and the blue line as a group scored 48 goals.
But the 2022-23 team is pushing them talent wise.
Brodzinski on a breakway!!!!!!
Bryce asks how you like me now?
He has points in 10 of the last 12 games (7 goals and 5 assists) and now is third on the team with 8 goals.
Great to see. He has been so much better since Bob put him with Nelson and Nevers. I’ve been pleasantly surprised.
If you're legitimately getting compared to that defense corps... you're doing something very, very right.@handyman The 2001-02 defense was better. Leopold, Martin, and Ballard had 38 goals and the blue line as a group scored 48 goals.

And yes, I think this year's D is getting to the point that the comparison is valid.

@steve-mn Ballard/Leopold/Martin played 2170 NHL games vs 78 AHL games (nearly all by Ballard his first post-MN year), so you right — quite the comparison
Love seeing what this team can do when they stay away from turkey, mashed potatoes, and swimming

I know, I was there 😉
I don't much care about the goals, I was talking about the overall game. Those guys could score because they had solid D partners (Demarchi and Angell and Stevens) While LaCombe and Faber might not score as many goals they move the puck just as well and they are ridiculous in their own end.
Motzko definitely knows how to construct a defense...hence why we never won a title after he left 😉
Motzko must have missed Jess in the media scrum post game this weekend.
Helps that Jess didn’t make the trip.
Keep your stick on the ice...

When I tell people about that team, I always say that we had a guy who played 600 games in the NHL on the third pairing! That is one helluva defense!
@handyman i was pretty young back then and was a little kid, i remember some of the names looking up the 2002 roster and it said brett mackinnon was a f/d was that a common theme back then a player being a 2 position player so to speak? anyone feel free to educate me on his role on the team so to speak
Brett filled in at D a few times...a few years later Sertich did that as well. Usually due to illness/hurt players and the WJC.
Brett played hockey with my cousin back in the day. His dream was to be a Gopher and was willing to do anything to play. He would have cut off an arm to just sit on the bench.
State pushed for maybe 10 minutes Friday. They had a better game today, but every time they made noise the Gophers answered.
There was a lot on the line this weekend for the home team: a legitimacy test and 6 points in the standings. Gophers came in one point ahead and leave up by 7. Huge swing.

Up by 7 over MSU, but 5 over PSU.

Huge sweep. Got a chokehold on the conference at this point. Now don’t look back.
No penalties called allowed the game to flow better. i really liked the fact the officials didn’t want to be part of the game and allowed the game to be played. Neither team did anything outrageous and the game did not get out of hand because no penalties were called.
11-3 cumulative score sweeps on the road are always welcome. A repeat this coming weekend would be a beautiful way to go into the holiday break.
