2-0 after two periods. Shots are 23-13 in favor of the Gophers.
Pitlick now has 5 goals in the last 5 games and is tied for 3rd on team in goals with 6 goals for the season. Cooley and Brodzinski also have 6 goals this season.
Brodzinkski!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brodzinski 3-0.

A shut out for the Closer!!!! Get the lead and turn it over to the CLOSER!!!!

Very fun game tonight. Hopefully they can get the sweep tomorrow. Go Gophers!
Awesome game! Such high hopes for this team.. trying to just enjoy the season.
Fantastic win. No notes.
That was scary.
Take nothing away from Michigan State, I think they played with some great intensity and really gave us a game. The fact that the game was really back and forth and we only had a 1-0 until late in the second just shows how solid of a team they are. 5-0 doesn’t necessarily tell the whole story.
That said, we were just the better team tonight. I thought overall we played really well and everyone on the team contributed in their own way. Close was solid and had some big saves. Would have loved to see Kurth or Pino bag one but there’s always tomorrow. But speaking of tomorrow night, Sparty will come out hot so I’m thinking we might see the game stay pretty tight all of the way until the finish. Boys better be ready. But I’m excited. We play like we did tonight and I think we’ll get the sweep.
Finally, this just shows that when we give a full effort for 60 minutes and we’re on our game, we can beat anyone in the country. Just need bring this kind of game more consistently.
Great team win by the Gophers. The Gophers looked a lot faster than the Spartans tonight. I'm guessing Michigan State will be much more physical tomorrow night. Kudos to the Coaching staff also (the boys looked very prepared tonight)

I was about to post an abbreviated version of that. They didn't look like a team that was going to lose by 5. I honestly thought it was going to be closer to 1-0 and maybe it would have been had they not had to rely so heavily on one of their lines versus our depth. If they didn't break the shutout, they were going to run out of gas and that's pretty much what happened.

Great response from the team after that last game. Happy Close got the shutout.
Nevers had a nice pair of assists tonight too.
Go Gophers!
The Gophers are now 11-3 in regulation (1-2 in 3 on 3 overtimes) out scoring their opponents 67-42 while playing the 4th toughest schedule in the country.
They have now beaten Sparty 10 straight times giving up a total of 14 goals.
If the team happens to lose tomorrow things will be alright. ?
I have a feeling our losing record/weakness in 3-3 overtimes will not be a factor in the playoffs. ?
The scary thing for the rest of the teams is the Gophers have done this while playing a lineup of half freshmen (7 freshmen forwards and 3 freshmen defensemen) every game. They have been this dominate while making freshmen mistakes.

And, they're starting to make fewer of those mistakes as the year goes on. (As one would expect)
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
It all starts with the way they played defense. They locked it down tonight. Cooley has caught fire, so look out...

If I am not mistaken, there wasn't a single penalty in this game!! For the most part, our team defense was pretty sound tonight.
I watching it now...sorry but this looks like the MSU team we see every year. Well almost, now they are as old as Mankato.
Same boring style of play, praying for a mistake and winning 1-0.
If I’m going to nit pick anything… I personally like Kurth better with Huglen and Pitlick over Lamb.
I don’t see either of the other top two lines getting shaken up.
I think at this point Kurth has an edge over Lamb. But that’s just my opinion.
Michigan State over the last 4 weekends scored 10 against Wisconsin, 8 against Ohio State, 10 against Penn State, and 9 against Miami, Ohio. Going into tonight they were top 10 in the country in goals per game.
Then they ran into the Gopher D wall and the Closer.
More stats for you @collegehockeyaddict
In the last 10 seasons, MN is 27-7-4 against MSU.

Seemed like Sparty had it in our end for long periods of time but didn't generate many scoring threats.

You're not mistaken. More than that, I don't recall seeing anything from either team that was penalty-worthy.

There were a couple of possible trips/interference type calls that could have been called both ways, but nothing either way that left me wondering why something wasn't called. Some games are called really tight, others let very minor infractions go... this was one of the latter. To be honest, I prefer that. I like letting the "maybe it could be called, maybe not" to be let go.If I am not mistaken, there wasn't a single penalty in this game!! For the most part, our team defense was pretty sound tonight.

Seemed like an easy game to ref, mostly clean games by both teams.
Never understood why refs in any sport insist on inserting themselves into the narrative of the game. If you see a play and say “that might be a penalty”…don’t call it. Call the penalties that are obvious or create a key advantage. At the same time I’ve never understood the whole “you could call holding on every play” idea in football. If there’s holding, call it. You’re creating an advantage if you don’t.
Nice game by the Gophers. I think this was a planned bounce back game, meaning I think the ASU games were just recreational for the team with no one worrying about losing the Saturday game.
In every game there are going to be some slight mistakes and bad bounces, but that is the situations Close was solid.
Did it seem like the Gophers were having some problems with the ice at the start of the periods?
I posted it in the local broadcast thread as well, but DirecTV and some of the Fox channels need to agree on a contract by Friday or they could be pulled off the air. This includes BTN, but not Ballys. So those who watch the Gophers on BTN via DirecTV need to be prepared for other options.
The deadline for a deal has passed and BTN hasn't blacked out yet. It might still be coming though, but hard to be sure since neither Fox Sports nor DirecTV are saying much publicly. Battles like this were to be expected with inflation being what it has been this year, though sucks that it has to potentially impact us right away.
I've been watching this carefully over the past few days not just because I'm a DirecTV customer, but also sports channels have been helping keep cable and satellite providers alive as streaming options keep eating away their market shares. If they can't come to a new agreement, it could represent a huge shift in TV.

State came out strong to start the 3rd but Gophers didn't give them much of a sniff. After that, the dam broke. Minnesota with a chance tomorrow to put some distance between themselves and the second place Spartans.
Great win from the good guys. Now the question is can they do it back to back nights?
That was a clinical win and the Gophers were all business. Good to see.
That was probably the Gophers most complete game of the season. Complete domination. When this team plays with structure and lets the offense come to them, they are going to be awfully difficult to beat by anyone.
A 5-0 win on the road with zero penalties? That certainly qualifies as "solid" to me. Very nice effort.

I do not remember any Gopher hockey games ever played without any penalty’s being called
Aloha!

Great news for those of us with DirecTV

It's good to see Cooley getting going.
He was standing in the right spot for both goals last night. On the first goal Nevers set him up perfectly. (Nevers also had a nice touch pass on Brodz's goal.) On Cooley's second goal Snuggerud's shot handcuffed St. Cyr, and the puck bounced straight down to the ice.
If I played on Snuggerud's line, I'd tell him to shoot the puck every chance he gets. I'll be mucking for a rebound. Snuggerud, Brodzinski, Pitlick, and Cooley are snipers. Add in the farm kid, Knies, Huglen, Kurth, Lamb, and Strobel and you have a bunch of guys who can really shoot the puck.
The Gophers are a really hard team to beat when they play the game the right way - from the net out. Last night was a good example of how dominating a team can be when they all work hard to keep the puck out of their own net. Teams with much less firepower than Minnesota have won national championships doing that.
