I miss the simple pleasures of youth. I was thinking today how when I was a kid in the late 70s and 80s and how much I loved biking up to Ridgedale with a friend or two... playing arcade games at Piccadilly Circus... grabbing some Taco Bell or an Orange Julius... looking through Spencer's Gifts at rock posters, etc. Checking out the girls in their tight stonewashed Guess jeans. ?

Somebody get me that DeLorean so I can hit 88 MPH and go back to 1983. ?

Wasting my lunch money on video games at Circus Circus (?) by Cooper HS when they had open lunch. $3 got you breadsticks and a few games.

Growing up in small town, USA in the 80's was the best. We did so many things, kids (especially in the metro areas) now days miss out on.  I wouldn't trade growing up in small town, USA for anything.  So many adventures and memories!!!

70s/early 80s Woodbury was similar.  I know it  sounds strange now given its size but consider Radio drive was gravel until sometime in the 80s and you could count the restaurants in town on one hand.  Heck, the closest McDonald's was on Suburban Ave. (94 & White Bear Ave) until the early 80s.  My graduating class was around 230 and I suspect a significant chunk came to Woodbury from Newport and rural northern Cottage Grove.

The flip side is getting on my bike in the morning and running around with friends was awesome and even better in the winter since the park a few blocks from my house had two rinks and you could turn the lights on/off whenever you wanted to skate.  Good times.

Looking back, I've always said "I could've came up missing and my parents would never have known for hrs." We would get up in the morning, be on our bikes and riding where ever we wanted. Going down to the river, playing around on the cliffs, rock formations and caves on the west end of town.  Along with playing on one the biggest train trestles on the Great Northern and Hwy. 2. Or taking our .22's, going out in the fields on our bikes and shooting anything that wasn't human, a pet or livestock. No cell phones, come lunch time, my mom would assume I'm at friends house. Come dinner time she would have started to worry.

Heard yesterday that Hwy 61 Scenic Route between Duluth and Two Harbors is being shutdown for up to 5 weeks for repair. MNDOT is saying the needs repair or it might fall into the lake. Not the end of the world. My wife and I like going up to Duluth and beyond over MEA weekend and our anniversary weekend to explore and relax. And some of that is on the scenic route of 61. Though I've heard that parts of 61 will have some access. So I guess we'll find out when we get up there.  Or it's sticking finding things to explore on Hwy 61 between Two Harbors and Beaver Bay.

After northwest Montana, the Flathead Valley and Glacier Nat'l Park, northern Minnesota followed by the UP Michigan are favorite places to visit for outdoor activities!!!

Spending 7 days in Kauai. Wrapping it up tonight with some brutal travel time back to the mainland. Never been to Hawaii before. Absolutely loved it. I have a hard time imagining any island in Hawaii better than Kauai.

I remember when Maple Grove was a crappy movie theater, a Target and some liquor stores. (may have been a Wal-Mart)  Back then Osseo seemed like a hundred miles away and I grew up in New Hope 😉

Just so since I moved to the Cities in ‘94 some of the suburbs have gone from nothing to stuff everywhere. Apple Valley for one. Pumpkin, corn and soybean fields are all now Home Depot, Culver’s and apts.

Maui is pretty wonderful.  I played the Plantation Course at Kapalua while me and the bride were there on our honeymoon.  I 4 putted every green but it's unimaginably beautiful.

We also had to cancel our Hawaii trip in 2020 (Napili, Maui).  Condo on the beach reserved for Christmas.  I've always wanted to do Christmas in Hawaii.  Hopefully it'll happen someday.  But it isn't in the near future.

We are doing Christmas in Palm Desert this year, looking forward to it!

I was hoping the Gophers football team would put themselves in position to play in the Rose Bowl, I'd gladly extend the trip a couple days if they put together a magical season, but after laying an egg against the choo-choo's I am not too confident in a Pasadena game.

Not even noon yet… changed the oil to my vehicle, rotated the tires as well, mowed the lawn twice, winterized the lawnmower (Sea Foam is great), started up the snowblower to get it ready, fixed the shower drain in the master bath, climbed up into our big tree in the backyard, took down the disc swing, readjusted it and put up higher on the branch. Now I’ll probably start a bonfire just for fun… lol!!!

A girl on my daughter's cross country team was running at the very back of the pack in a meet yesterday. Toward the end of the race, a girl on another team started to cry and said she wanted to quit. Our girl grabbed her hand and held it while they ran together for about 150 meters and hugged her when they crossed the finish line.  Maybe there is hope for the future after all.

That’s fantastic!  Love that kind of sportsmanship.

Reminds me a bit of the Olympic dad who ran out of the stands to help his son who sustained a brutal leg injury in a track race finish. Officially he was DQ’d but an incredible moment highlighting the spirit of the games.

In fact I think the dad recently passed.

Started that bonfire this afternoon and after close to a 100 bonfires in a year and a half. I finally melted and burnt out the bottom of the fire pit. Granted it wasn’t a fancy and top of the line pit. Still got every penny out of it. Now have to do some research and find a better one. Prefer a portable over having to build one into the ground with landscaping.

Driving down up Kato for the game and seeing harvest on 60 between 35w and Kato. Accustomed to harvesting wheat and barely. Though seeing the combines in the corn fields and the grain trucks/hopers patiently waiting is a simple pleasure to the eyes.

To be fair, there was a small car in front of the truck that could have been more the culprit.

Got my daughter married off without a hitch in the execution yesterday.  Couldn't have had a more perfect weather day with loads of family and friends to help celebrate.  We just sent off the last of our visitors from the weekend and now it's time to sit down and relax the rest of the day today before working on sifting through the aftermath of hosting people for the last six days.

Closing the cabin tomorrow, but today is absolutely glorious!  Sunny, warm, light breeze.  We took a 2 hr hike and could have gone longer but I was hungry lol.  Tonight is a celebratory dinner: ribeye on the grill, cheesy scalloped potatoes and salad.  Plus we have some wine we need to finish off.  Tomorrow will be busy but it’s time, temp will plunge by Thursday and we need to drain the water.  Then we can start counting the days until cabin opening 2023!

What have I got? I got no snacks and I got no respect.

Hearing from an old friend. Hadn't heard from him in a few years, met him back in 2007, my first time to Houghton. Caught up a bit, and we're hoping to keep up in tough. Good dude, stand-up guy.

Putting out nearly a dozen pumpkins and watching the squirrels eat them one buy one.  I'll cut a hole in them one at a time and the squirrels will go in bring a pumpkin seed out, shell it and eat the inside.  It's really entertaining to watch and hardly no mess cause they eat everything.

So YOURE one of those feeding the little fluffy rats! Lol.  The squirrels in our neighborhood don’t need additional food, they all look very “healthy”.  A few years ago our neighbors had 2 pumpkins on their front steps.  We watched the squirrels chew their way inside and suddenly a pumpkin was rolling down the sidewalk with a squirrel inside, like a hamster wheel!  It was very funny.

What have I got? I got no snacks and I got no respect.

We had a squirrel problem at our old house....until we had a hawk problem.  Apparently Cooper's Hawks love squirrels and blue jays.

I'm about 99.9% positive I have no mice in my house, but my garage late this summer and early fall I noticed a few signs. Haven't seen any more signs after a couple of weeks of peanut butter and fruit rollups baited on some old fashion traps.

FYI... mice like peanut butter, but love fruit rollups.
