Nooo nope nope nope. I’ve never been high on him and this only proves it imo. Sure a decent player but we can do better.

Will kids have to eventually sit out a year to transfer again once the Covid years are over? I don’t like all these kids just bailing on their team cause they’re butthurt about playing time or whatever or think they have a better chance at a championship elsewhere. What kind of a bond can you have had with your teammates to just up and leave? Honor your commitments - although same goes for coaches offering kids a scholarship or spot on the team.

Dumb Question... but can players enter the transfer portal to test out the 'market' and decide to return to their original school? Or once you enter have you basically cut all ties with that university?

Yes. Rossini was in the portal last year.

A player can choose to come back. I can't imagine it happens much, but I've never seen a rule preventing it.

So coaches can't see people from their school in the portal, but they still know whos looking around. It is just comes down to the coaches decision if they're welcomed back after entering.

No, Smilanic and Sillinger the top forwards in there? I heard ASU going hard after Sillinger.

Not a lot left for Goalies. St Cyr top guy?? I imagine Cameron Rowe could end up in there soon given they picked up Mercyhurst kid

If the Gophers get St Cyr, they would have had sons with interesting Moms. One from an Olympic great and another from a female goalie (Manon Rhéaume) who played with Tampa

It’s a two way street. The truth is…post HS hockey…it’s no secret that Juniors & D1 hockey are truly a big time BUSINESS for both players & coaches..,Maybe in a couple years (transfer rules) will change, but I doubt they’ll completely return to the old rules. Players have one hockey career, coaches oversee MANY careers. That’s why (as fans & rubes) what we may think about a particular players decision…would likely be seen very differently.., if that player was our son.

Coaches can see who is in the portal and have the option to revoke their scholarship

Short answer: no.

The transfer portal has gained a ton of notoriety over the past couple of years because of the NCAA rule change where players have a 1-time transfer without being forced to sit out a year but it's been around for a few years. This "college free agency" as it has been called in the football world, has really lead to a huge growth in the use/discussion of the transfer portal. In years past, players had to sit out a year unless they were granted a waiver by the NCAA (usually due to a "hardship" like the coach getting fired). Previously, players had to obtain permission from the coach/school (to be released from their letter of intent) before being allowed to seek a transfer/be contacted by other coaches. The one-time transfer rule was talked about long before the NCAA began granting an extra year of eligibility for COVID.

The NCAA made the decision to create the transfer portal in fall of 2018 to create a portal where players could enter their desire to transfer which allows other coaches faster, easier access to contact them.

It was initially intended to help monitor compliance managing the the transfer process, as well as allow players to clearly demonstrate their desire to change schools (it is against NCAA rules for a coach to contact a player on an opposing team for recruiting purposes unless they are in the portal). I don't think they planned to grant the one time transfer rule when they made the portal, TBH.

I don't see it going away any time soon, though I do think it the announcements of transferring will slow down a bit once we're out of the extra COVID year era.

No they can't see who's in the portal from their team. But it's never a secret who goes in the portal. Scholarship are year to year so they can be not renewed for almost any reason. I did see a tweet that Jess Myers had and he's right it can be revoked but its not just because he entered the portal even though that's the reason.

If we random idiots on this website can see who is in the portal, you're being silly if you think the coaches somehow magically can't see the same information.

FYI -- all the kids in the portal aren't bailing on their teams. Some are being told to move onto another opportunity. There is too much money and pressure these days for honor to be the number one priority.

So that's kinda what I'm saying. It's no secret who goes in, but it not just an auto cut from the program and there goes their scholarship. I'd say there is a lot of players in the portal that their school would take back if the player is willing.

SO when I say they can not see which of their players are in the portal from their access, but they 100% know whos in the portal. The NCAA blocks that access to protect the athlete to allow them ability to test the water on interest.

Especially with this 5th year stuff needing to run its course. Lots of seniors who know they're not going to the NHL trying to extend careers on teams who have an incoming class they need to honor or push back. I believe that to be the case for the couple of Gopher seniors in the portal (maybe not, but feels likely). I'm hopeful this settles down a bit in the coming couple of years.

Not to sound too old school but... I miss the days of college athletes making the most of their chances at their chosen school.

This college free agency model is a turn off and has made me less of a college sports fan (I spend more energy now on the NFL and NHL than I do their college equivalent).

I tend to agree. It's a bit sad to see a bunch of players that I followed for a couple years and got excited to see in a Gopher uniform enter the transfer portal and be gone so quickly.

I think need to go back to have players sit out a year or lose a year before transferring. Not just hockey, but football and all other sports.

That isn't going to happen, and seems a bit lame anyways since if a coach jumps ship they never have to wait a year and they are literally quitting on their team and getting paid to do it.

Normal students don't have to take a year off if they transfer, it is completely unreasonable to force athletes to do it just because we as fans are selfish and don't want them to leave.

There should be some control around this for sure. As example, Cruikshank will play for 3 schools during his NCAA career. Now, maybe the U said you are one and done here and that's why he's moving on for this 5th year and ok then. But it feels like there should be some sort of parameters. Wide open free agency doesn't feel like the right outcome. Moving the pendulum somewhere to the middle seems right.

Or...

A kid graduated and it is time to either play pro hockey or move on to post college life. I think going to a 3rd school is a bit much for Cruikshank.
