Messi's set piece goal was filthy good
Come on Clint, need to put that one on net.
And yet comes back to put them up 1-0!!
The the way the 1st 20 of this half is going the US will be lucky to finish with a clean sheet. Of course being a man down doesn't help.
I played soccer as a kid and really want to like it, especially watching the national teams, but you would think a sport with so little scoring would have rules to:
- not make one team play a man short for a whole half or longer?
- one player in the box passing to another in the box ends up as an offside?
I'm not trying to make hockey comparisons or bash soccer, I'm just surprised the sport is so huge worldwide when every time I watch I think 'well that's a stupid rule'.

10 men vs 11 is a whole lot different than 4 men to 5. It's only a slight advantage really, and is actually somewhat rare. As far as offside rule goes, it's a bit wonky and 50/50 good call/bad call in many cases....but it's the rules that have been in place for a century or more.
Peru with an obvious hand ball goal against Brazil to go up 1-0. If this holds, it will be US vs Brazil on Thursday.

USA is playing Ecuador regardless of the outcome of this match.
Really? Yahoo must be giving me bad numbers.

Wow... I figured Brazil would be 2nd.
Damn Yahoo was giving me live standing as if Brazil was tied with Ecuador. I hate live standings.

Home sick for the day, so that sucks, but it's a nice trade off to get pretty much an entire day of international soccer on tap :dup:
Ireland and Sweden about to kick off. 2 very passionate fanbases, sea of yellow vs. sea of green.
Belgium and Italy at 2 is a very intriguing game, as well.
Beautiful goal by Hoolahan just after half, and a nice play by Ibra to get the OG. Should be a fun last 20 minutes. 3 points would be so vital for either team, with Belgium and Italy also in the group.
This Belgium v Italy game has been a lot of fun to watch! Belgium is full of speed and skill, but Italy has been beating them up and countering their attack.
Yeah Belgium honestly should have tied that game, but Italy's defense is just so solid. For 70+ minutes there was NO room out there for anybody. The last 20 minutes Belgium opened them up a bit, but for the most part they were left frustrated.
Fun game!
Yes! Venezuela!! Golazo!
Fuck off, Mexico.
The second half of this match had been great.
How about the violence in France?

Funny how the English always seem to be involved in it too

It's definitely a case of the old reputation coming back to haunt us. England are still seen as the kings of the casuals. England fans have been attacked abroad for years now because the locals got pumped and thought it was going to be the same types from the '70s and '80s. They just end up beating the shit out of some face-painted guy wearing one of those stupid hats. Nowadays all the battle-tested of the brainless in England have to turn their passports in to the authorities every time England plays away.
I saw something on Russian hooligans awhile back. They train out in the woods for these hooligan brawls. They're cops and ex-military as well. Compare that to the average English hooligan who has beer and chip grease coursing through their veins. But I'd like to see them go against the '80s Red Army.
Big match vs. Ecuador, kicking off at 8:30!!
Kinda like the kit.
Eduador looking very creative so far, but US nicely has been far from timid in their own right. btw in the feed I'm watching Juergen can be clearly heard barking orders.
Do the Sounders play there? If so do they sell out? Sparse crowd.
Lol twice now they've missed a Bobby Wood run behind the Ecuadorian defense while showing a replay
I get the feeling that if USMNT loses this game, a horrible turnover will be a contributing factor.
GOAL!!
Beauty of a header! 1-0 USA!
As for the crowd, this game was announced what, four or five days ago? The group stage dates and locations were known for a whole lot longer than that.
Funny thing is one minute before that goal I was thinking, "if the US are to have a chance we're going to have to hear Dempsey's name more than once per half...".
Dillo you're right I'm probably being somewhat unfair on the crowd size. It's also a day game during the week.
DEUCE!!!!!
What a goal!!!!!!!
Bobby Wood is making things happen.
Almost a colossal fuck up there.
Bradley is just awful....I'm sorry.
Bradley screwed up, but the US had no less than 2 key possessions late deep in Ecuador territory and instead of holding the ball or even trying to make a play gave it away in stupid fashion. I realize you're trying to protect the lead, but come on.
btw the ball used in Copa reminds me of Wilson:
Bradley has been horrible so far. He needs to come off. Wood is making things happen up front.
What the fuck is happening.
Awesome now Wood is out for the semis if we get there
What in the hell is happening in this game?
Horrible call
WTF?

I think cards are reset after the quarterfinal, so he shouldn't miss it.
DOS!!
Wood will not be out for the next game.

I'm not sure about that. I swear one of the announcers said Wood was going to miss the next game.
Pretty sure Jones is done for the tournament though.
Three players with double yellows this game. Woof.
The US trying not to lose late. Is this the Gophers vs. OSU?

They reset after the semis
Likely Messi in Houston. Can't wait.

I thought I heard quarterfinals, but I must have heard wrong. I guess we will be full strength for the 3rd place game.
Someone mentioned following the loss to Columbia (must have been a different thread) that the US would only play 3 games this tournament. I don't point that out to mock them (I thought it might be a reasonable prediction) but because it's been such a nice turnaround in form since that match. Hopefully this will be a springboard for better results when WC qualifications resume because they've put themselves into a bit of a hole on that front.
