Why is the men’s Olympic tournament U23? Has the Olympic committee not seen the World Cup? Seems like a huge missed opportunity that have the major world soccer powers meet more often on the world stage.
I realise I’m probably not the first lackadaisical soccer fan to ask this, so thanks for your patience.
Clubs are far less willing (not willing at all?) to release players for the Olympics and therefore at U23 it reduces how many players that would likely make the roster won't miss out. And in that regard the Olympics imho should really be U22 or U21.
Dest with an absolute beauty! Have a hit, son!
Nice, solid win. Pulisic and Dest looked like they link up really well together.
Even though Dest is technically being played out of position at LB, I think that might be the spot for him. Having him teamed up with Pulisic could be a really good thing.
Another decent test for USMNT today, taking on Northern Ireland in about 45 minutes!

Gio Reyna!!!
A bit lucky, but we'll take it. lol
Pulisic! Went down a bit easy lol, but nice work getting into that position and forcing them to make that tackle.
North Macedonia just beat Germany 2-1 in Germany in a world cup qualifier!!!!!
I'm still not sure how they won, but the US beat Mexico in the first ever CONCACAF Nation's Cup. That was one of the craziest, weirdest matches I have ever seen.
That was definitely a wild match. Peak CONCACAF!
Ream was the only one that looked out of place I thought, he was getting beat a lot.
Gio Reyna was superb. The corners were working all night, Mexico couldn't defend them, it was really nice to see that rewarded a couple times. And Pulisic stepping up when it mattered and hitting an unsaveable penalty. And then the biggest moment, Horvath! What can you say about that, what a moment!
Beating Mexico in a final with our young core leading the way, feels damn good!
Someone said the US never plays a home game against Mexico, and last night that was very apparent.

That Maroon 5?

I mean, with the amount of Mexican Americans living in the US, it's just an unfortunate situation for the USMNT. I don't think there's really a good way to sell to only US fans. Can't do geography based things like some pro sports teams have done.
Did Costa Rica field a weaker than normal team tonight? We usually don't beat them 4-0.

Yeah I read that 7 or 8 of their starters last night play in the Costa Rican domestic league. No Keylor Navas in net. So definitely was not their A team.
To be fair, it also was not OUR A team.
Apparently Liga MX and MLS are considering a merger and FIFA is on board. Huh.
After the opening game today, Euros kick off in full swing tomorrow!
Finally Belgium's time to bring home a trophy? Their golden generation is starting to slip away.
Holy shit. Most disturbing thing I've ever seen watching a sporting event.
Godspeed Christian. Please be okay.
That was horrible to watch. Prayers to all involved.
Very early reports suggesting that he was conscious and raised his hand as he was being carted off.

UEFA official Twitter account saying he has been stabilized. That's good news.
Saw the update that he has been taken to the hospital and has been stabilized, which is great news. Watching them administer CPR on the field had to be horrifying for his teammates, the Finnish players, the fans and his family. Here is hoping he makes a full recovery.
Seeing his eyes wide open and on his side when the trainers got to him. He may have been dead or his heart had stopped. Too see him completely motionless with the eyes open was the scariest thing I have ever seen during a live sporting event.

The Denmark team doctor said that Eriksen was "gone" when they got to him. Heart stopped, not breathing.
For Eriksen's sake, this was the best possible place for that to happen. They started chest compressions in under 2 minutes after he collapsed. From what I've read, another minute or two and you start getting into permanent brain damage territory. Had this happened at home, or maybe even in a training session, he very likely would have died.
Really scary stuff, the whole medical team deserves a damn medal, literally saved his life.
I wonder if this was a case of myocarditis -- which has been in the news quite a bit from Tyler Nanne pre-pandemic to Marco Rossi having it after recovering from covid. Fortunate to have the medical team there and ready to help.

It looks like one of the Canadian players nods "thank you" to the goalie.

Insane sequence by Hungary to give up the equaliser and promptly march down and retake the lead.

Wow, Germany level! Crazy game
Wow, Germany level! Crazy game
The Germans still don’t look like the finely tuned machine again. They just haven’t looked right since before the last World Cup.
Those two touches from Chiesa…my goodness
Belgium and Portugal, biggest game of the tournament so far, should be interesting! I think Portugal's poor defense costs them, and Belgium moves on.
And of course again my Oranje go out!
My goodness that strike by Hazard was a thing of beauty.
I thought the latest kit for the US was bad, but Portugal's? Woof.

Playing with 10 men in a knockout game is a strategy that rarely works
This Croatia - Spain match has been extremely entertaining. Spain takes the lead so far in ET 4 - 3.
France stay within 1 after a huge PK save!'
Wow what a tournament.
And how France are level!!!
Wowww, what a shift. 2 in under 2 minutes for Benzema.
They were looking 0-2 in the face, under 5 minutes later they're up 2-1

Insane
Holy moly what a day!!!
Coman inches away from winning it for France, wow
Cheese!!!
WOW. Mbappe misses the crucial penalty.
What an absolutely insane day
It did look like the Swiss keep took a step forward? But not called.
What an incredible 2 games today. Wow.

There seems to be a lot of leeway with this... (I think there needs to be some leeway)
I cannot imagine a goalie having much of a chance if there was zero leeway and they truly could not leave their line until the ball is kicked.
