Call the game. I don't give a crap if BUF has to forfeit. Don't give one single sh*. NFL SHOULD postpone the game. They can figure it out later.

This is heartbreaking right now. 🙁

Saw the Bengals drive and the Buffalo drive. Went to take a shower and came out to this. Saw both teams on the field. Good thing no one on ESPN or ABC is speculating.

I'm honestly having trouble holding it together. A player's life is on the line, just playing the game he loves. 🙁

Whenever the league talks about player safety we should all remember that the NFL tried to make the players warm up for five minutes and restart this game before the coaches stepped in

I agree. The way this has been handled has been very respectful. Joe Buck has been a steady voice during this. Hope Hamlin is ok. Just postpone the game.

Sounds like the coaches talked, and said F the league, we're not playing.

It sure looks like Zach Taylor took the initiative and told McDermott they didn’t have to play the game. Good on both the coaches for not listening to the league right away.

Commotio Cordis.  Happens in baseball, a sharp hit to the sternum causes heart failure.
I feel for those players on the field…watching real life CPR is brutal.  It is NOT like tv.

I’m watching a medical clip of a Dr. speculating. Yes, it’s a speculation, but he is a professional. His speculation is what I would say what happened. Just he can name all the medical terminology and make sense about it.

That is what I have been seeing. I just pray for that kid's life. Things like this should make one realize that sports don't matter in the big picture. Kudos to ABC/ESPN treating this in a respectful manner.

Watching is awful, administrating it is scary but was worse after the fact.

Per Hamlin's marketing rep:
Update on Damar: His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests. We will provide updates as we have them.

Based on a variety of reports, the

did not make the decision to suspend the Bengals-Bills game. Rather, players/captains and coaches from both teams, who had witnessed Bills safety Damar Hamlin getting CPR for 8 minutes, said they would not continue the game. #NFL

This guy does have the blue checkmark, but obv dunno how big a deal that is nowadays.

In defense of the NFL it does take time to cross the T’s and dot the I’s. More than likely this game was going to be postponed. Though it takes time to make sure everyone is on the same page. Though some of these ESPN studio commentators need to pump the brakes and not be on their soapbox taking shots at the NFL.

The NFL is a multi-BILLION dollar company. They can figure out the details later. Just sayin'.

And Stefon showed up at the hospital, wasn't going to be let in, played the "Do you know who I am?" card. GOOD. He basically said, "I'm his teammate, I need to be here for him." They let him in.

Ive read this speculation a couple of places.  I’ve also heard it can lead to a full recovery if resuscitated in time as the heart stops without damage.

Just thinking about administrating CPR and an AED. I’ve been trained over and over in an AED, but luckily haven’t had to use it. Same for CPR training. Though I’ve administered CPR couple times and there is no easy way. Can’t imagine trying to do CPR on a football field with player’s gear. And then to try to place an AED. Not fun, never fun. It messes with your mind, cause you always think what you could have done different.

Yes defensive efficiency which measures how quickly you get off the field and adjusts for quality of competition is better ? there’s a reason credible people cite it over your defensive metrics.

For reference the Vikings are 22nd in DVOA this year and hopefully you’re enjoying the game today ?

Not sure I'd tout the accuracy of DVOA and then say they have the Vikings above like... 29th?

They aren’t great on D obviously but there’s other teams that are just worse ?. Teams like raiders, Arizona, Detroit, Atlanta, and Chicago come to mind.

I was pleasantly surprised last night to not hear any booing from fans in the stadium. Obviously they had seen that it was a serious situation, but there always seems to be a handful that don’t care. Especially with a few drinks in them. Good on the fans to patiently wait and calmly exit the stadium after the game was postponed. I’m guessing social media did help to inform them how dire the situation was.

I read a tweet last night so it’s just speculation but trained medical personnel would have cut off his uniform before CPR and certainly before AED.  AED must be placed against bare skin. Medics carry sharp scissors that cut through clothes in an instant.  I’m sure that also contributed to his team mates reactions, CPR is very disturbing to watch and especially if they witnessed AED.
He is in my thoughts today, 24, it’s just tragic.

I don't see any way this game being played at all. And no clue how the league is going to handle it.  Does it go down as "no contest".  The #1 seed goes to KC. Cincy #2 and Buffalo #3 since they both would win their divisions. Making Buffalo go back to Cincy as the makeup game if they both win Wild Card weekend.

They still have to play a game this weekend.  And the Bills as of now have the better record.  It is potentially a rather significant game with respect to home field in the 2nd round.

I wonder if any fantasy leagues got creative due to the timing and implications of the game being postponed because for a lot of leagues this was the championship week. I was in the championship and have Joe Burrow but I was down 30 and had like a 5% chance of winning so I would’ve lost anyhow. But for other leagues it prob wasn’t as cut and dry.

(and yes I care way more about Hamlin’s recovery than fantasy football but I’m guessing some leagues that play for big money were affected by it)

In one of the leagues I'm the commish of, we are seeing if they happen to add the game after week 18. If they happen to resume it, we will pick it up from there. If not, we will treat it like the covid year and since it was the last game of the week they are SOL. The leader in the championship game has a significant lead, so it probably won't matter. I have heard that some leagues are using the stats the Bills and Bengals players will get for this weekends games.

Whatever happens, happens. I believe Bills have #2 seed, CIN #3, KC #1. If that's the way it goes, with a cancelled game, so be it. The CIN/BUF game is not important at all right now. If it ends up being a quirk, it's a quirk.

Both the NFL and the Players Assoc made clear today that they did not give the players a “5 minute warning” to resume play and left it in the hands of the teams. I think everyone was hoping for good news and when it didn’t come (as it often does) they called it. It was barely an hour after it happened that they called it and if they were as shell shocked as we were watching they were probably talking and saying “what the hell are our options here?”. The constant second guessing of anyone all the time on social media is just the nature of narcissists trying to look smart but it’s very tiring.

Seems like the key will be how quickly they returned blood flow to the brain. The number I saw was that it took 8 minutes of CPR/AED to restart his heart so no wonder the players were emotional as I’m sure that seemed like an eternity when you’re standing there watching. The brain doesn’t like not having blood flow and that seems like a long time.

In that case, I think the networks jumped the gun on if the game was going to proceed. I didn't hear the "5 minute" from social media, I heard it from the tv.

I doubt there’s a way to play it unless it was tonight which wasn’t gonna happen because the situation is no more resolved now that it was when it happened.

i’ll be interested to see how they count it in the standings. If they call the game canceled and it doesn’t count in the standings can they use winning percentage as a tie breaker since the teams will have played a different number of games? Do they count it as a tie?

I'd say winning percentage. BUT, I also think they'd try to squeeze the game in ONLY if it would matter after this week's results. My preference is call it no game, or a tie. The logistics would be insane.

When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.

In that case, I think the networks jumped the gun on if the game was going to proceed. I didn't hear the "5 minute" from social media, I heard it from the tv.

On the broadcast they were saying they gave the teams 5 minutes to warm up but I’m not sure where they got that as no one seemed to know what was going on including the sideline reporters. That narrative didn’t last long and they never brought it up again. My guess is the teams and/or officials went with the protocol for how they would handle any extended game stoppage and then everyone went “hold on”.

I could see that.

They would have to push the whole playoff schedule including the SB back a week. You can’t make those teams somehow squeeze in the game (on like Wed?) and then still play a playoff game that weekend.

I would call it canceled (not a tie) and use winning percentage as the tiebreaker if needed which could be some convoluted math.

I agree with the latter, but this IS the NFL.

I have no idea what they will do.

They can push the playoffs back a week and just not have a bye between the conference championships and the Super Bowl.  It would be pretty impossible to move the Super Bowl back a week this late in the season and timing.

I honestly believe as EMS was leaving the field, the NFL already had plans to cancel the game or leave it in the hands of the teams.  It just takes time to make sure everyone is on the same page. I was more tired of Ryan Clark talking about himself and taking shots at the NFL. And especially Stephan A Smith, the biggest blowhard ESPN has, taking his shots.

Having worked in medical since '98 for what I saw they did everything possible on the field and on to EMS. Lots what happened and is happening is out of precaution. I just heard they have him lying on his front to take any pressure from blood off the lungs.  Makes sense after CPR.  And being a physically fit NFL playing, I sure CPR compressions were not easy on him.
