The money line probably has the Bears behind Edina and maybe Chanhassen. I would not look past WBL... regardless of their quarterfinal history.

O-18 according to this.
White Bear Mariner won a quarterfinal game in 1982 when the district had two schools and they actually advanced to the title game before getting smoked. But as WBL, well, Friday's in early March were always free....

After reading the article, they were 0/18 going into the 2019 Tourney... so they are 0/19. I was way off. I was looking at the WBL/Hill section since 1975, so I missed as WBL's appearances prior to 1975.

I am happy for WBL. I think they finally win a game this year and advance to the semis.
WBL is not very good this year. They maybe win 1 if they are seeded, but Chan or Edina will smoke them.
They are finally healthy, I wouldn’t over look WBL.

Let's play hockey rankings for the tourney teams:
3. Edina
5. Chanhassen
14. Centennial
16. Grand Rapids
18. White Bear Lake
NR. Rochester JM/Century
NR. Elk River
NR. Cretin
I like the big crowds and buzz. That goes down when teams go multiple years in a row. Don’t have much of that this year. Obviously Chan and Edina will be the favorites, but upsets would not surprise me.
Grand Rapids going to advance on an OT goal that was a horrible missed cross check leading to the goal
Finally saw the winning goal and missed cross check. How the stripes missed that and how the Andover kid even got up is amazing.

I was really hoping to avoid this quarterfinal match up. I was wanting WBL, Grand Rapids, Chan and Edina all to play Friday night.

Probably not a real enjoyable one for the stripes to have to watch back afterwards. One of the hard parts of hockey when they swallow the whistle to try not “impact” a final score but you end up with that clearly having a big impact. Maybe it goes in anyway or maybe Andover player can clear it off the line, but instead you’re going to have to some kids who feel very wronged by how that ended
Is there a players to watch list for the tournament? Not just future gophers or Duluth but D-1 committed? It’s brought up during the games randomly but it’s usually by the end of the tournament before I have it figured out.
My Class AA predictions.
1st: Edina
2nd: Chanhassen
3rd: White Bear Lake
4th: Centennial
Cons: Grand Rapids
Cons. Runner-up: Cretin-Derham Hall

Elk River turning things around? My dad just told me that their AA bantam team just thumped Wayzata 7-0 in the section tournament.

This may give some of that info.

@gator Coaches pick. With teams coming from different conferences they have to sort through records, conference records and strength of schedule.
Thanks for letting me know about seeding for sections. I guess I learn something new everyday. Though I'll stand firm on why they don't seed the Tourney 1-8 and only 1-5. My source, which seems to always be ahead of the curve in things Tourney related and hasn't proven me wrong in over 20 years.
Keep your stick on the ice...
The tourney is likely to start seeding 1-8 if not next year than the year after and imho it's the right move.
Why should #4 get a guaranteed match-up with #5, but #1 could end up playing the theoretical #6?
Yeah, yeah you have to play 3 games but then don't seed period and go back to a fixed rotation of section vs. section.
To me, seeding does a couple of things. First of all, the best teams deserve to play the easiest schedule. Sure, you have to survive all the games, but as a coach of a #1, I'd prefer playing an eight-seed to get my tournament legs underneath me.
Secondly, the fans want to see the best hockey possible. There will always be upsets, but at least with proper seeding, there's a better chance of seeing the two best teams in the tournament on Saturday night.
We'll see... I text my source all the time, but most time it's about other things and life. I'll see him at the Tourney and I'll see if things have changed.
If I recall when they started to seed it was 1-3, then 1-4 and recently 1-5.

My contacts with the MSHSL agree with your account, @Gator.
The MSHSL is really not a fan of seeding. To them, the state tournament is a "Festival of Sections" instead of the determination of a champion. They will point to an upset as a means of showing that seeding gets it wrong. (I disagree-- I think seeding builds drama!)
There are a number of schools that will fight any change to this process out of fear that they could lose any reasonable path to the state tournament. To that end, they actually just changed the bylaws to enshrine a clause which approximately notes that "geographic representation must be included" in any state tournament competition, which all but kills any chance that we could see truly dynamic sections and reward the best teams with the easiest path.

That really has no bearing on seeding within the tournament itself. From what I have read it seems that seeding 1-8 will eventually happen.

Oh, I get that. But even with football the newest remedy is to seed the state tournament along the "North 1 North 2 South 1 South 2" variety, and that is in a spot where there are very few schools north of St. Cloud. I would expect even more turf protection when it gets to hockey.

Out of curiosity, where are you reading this.

Star Tribune all metro teams are out
Javon Moore makes the honorable mention 3rd team all metro
Jilldaughter Always from Edina makes all metro first team
you put a lot of effort into that one
Does anyone know where you can get a 1 page printable bracket?
Would be great if Warroad could do it this year after two crushing championship losses in a row. What a great team they had two years ago but the Plante brothers got them. Last year they had the best players (maybe in the whole tournament) and just ran out of gas.
I feel there are four teams that could win the A title this year so should be a good one! Hairmantown lost to Warroad, beat Cathedral. Cathedral beat both EGF and Warroad early in the season, that was quite a feat. Northfield has been strong all season and is 2-2 against the tournament field. Maybe they're my dark horse.
Hairmantown is 2-1 against the AA field. Yikes. Not right playing PWAA, BAA, a large portion of high school regular season vs AA, then dropping down to A for the section. It's a major fail if they lose.
Anything can happen in a single elimination tournament. Run into a hot goalie and even a AA team will lose to a state-tournament worthy Class A team.
Northfield likely would have won Section 1AA this year had they not dropped their co-op with Randolph. If they get good goaltending they are as good as anyone in Class A.
Orono played a Metro West schedule and was competitive with BSM and Chanhassen. Their d-men are very good.
It is a very good class A slate this year.

If they still co-op with Randolph, I would cheer for Northfield. My in-laws live in the happening town of Randolph!!!

Typically the Class A tourney has been 4-5 deep so hopefully sections are getting more competitive and the overall tourney only gets better,

Baring any upsets, Friday afternoon Class A semifinals can be a real fun double header. There has been some fun ones in last 20 years plus.

It really comes down to sections. Class AA a 3 or 4 seed can upset their way to State and still be a possible threat. Class A, if it's not the 1 seed or maybe a 2 they are pretty much a doormat.

I am curious if WBL or Grand Rapids has more pressure for Thursday evening 😂
So much history riding on that matchup.

WBL... they have to get that quarterfinal monkey off their back. Though a possible Edina/Grand Rapids semi could make it electric in the 'X' with the fans.
