How can the Twin Cities be hosting the Big 10 women’s BB Tournament this year? They will be on the outside looking in
They bid on it.

All the Big Ten teams are in the tournament. So no they won't be on the outside.
Both the men's and womens tournaments are in Minneapolis next spring.
Whalen is out.

- Funny, I was lectured on here pretty good by someone about three years ago for daring to question the job she was doing.
She should have never been hired straight away as the HC of a B1G program. Maybe start her off as an assistant. Sadly imho her departure is at least 1 year later than it should have been.

Well if there was any doubt on if she was fired or stepped down, this clears it up.

She's staying in the athletic department as an advisor so IDK if she was fired. Probably a bit of column A and a bit of column B, tbh. I'm guessing Coyle approached her and said "Something ain't working" and she likely agreed (mostly because it wasn't) but they both realize keeping her associated with the program in some function can provide a ton of positive results WRT fundraising etc.
Kind of odd that she wasn't at the press conference they said she would be at. Coyle said is was miscommunication his part and she was still talking with her assistants. ?

Listening to Barreiro and Justin Gaard. They have all but confirmed she was dismissed/fired.

Mark Coyle...the great communicator. (not)
When does Coyle get some heat for hiring two Big Ten basketball coaches with a combined ZERO head coaching experience?
I don't blame Whalen for the job she did. She's never coached before. That's on the AD.
Ben also hasn't been a head coach before, so it's not shocking he is struggling some.

I got out of work about 4:20 and turned on KFAN. Until they mentioned Whalen by name several minutes in, from the discussion they were having I was thinking it was Johnson who had gotten canned.

I didn't hear them at all but the early reports I had heard/seen was it was a "mutual agreement" to have her step down and take a different role. Maybe that report was exaggerated.
I think Coyle should have not been in a rush to have the presser today. Make the announcement and let Whalen have a couple of days to have it sink in, especially since she is staying on at the U. Have the presser next week. She is Minnesota Basketball royalty, and even though she failed at this job, she still deserves to have a chance to have a clear head at the presser and not feel like it was quick funeral.

Who was the dickhead who kept hounding Coyle to clarify the resolution over and over? Prolly thinks he was “doing his job”.
If she was “overcome by emotion” right before the press conference I would think it wasn’t her decision and Coyle was trying to show her the respect she deserves but of course the media jackal had to get his pound of flesh.

You can’t fault Coyle for thinking he might be able to catch lightning in a bottle. It’s not like the status quo was getting much movement.

I’m assuming she was OK with it until she wasn’t. I’m surprised they didn’t frame it as her getting a “promotion” and that she would be “heavily involved in the search for her replacement”.

Gaard is the women’s play by play announcer. He is in “the know”. He was actually somewhat critical of Coyle which was interesting and entertaining radio considering that’s his boss.
Gopher baseball gets no-hit tonight, losing 4-0 to Vanderbilt. They fall to 0-11 on the season.
Heard some troubling things about the program as well. Namely that there was a high school showcase here in MN with some of the best players in the midwest there working out for recruiters. Teams from all over the country were in attendance. Minnesota did not have a single representative scouting.
As we all know college baseball in very much a southern driven sport.
It sucks how far the Gophers have fallen but in a lot of ways Big Ten baseball is an after thought. Wisconsin doesn't even have a baseball team.
One of my engineering classmates at the U played on the team. We would talk about the team after class. This was when they were good in the Big Ten. He would always mention that I should come watch them if they had a home game(s) that week. Which was a bit sad since I could tell he wished more people would come watch them play.
I've been to some D1 college baseball games in the south. It is night and day different in a lot of ways including the fan support.
The college baseball season starts in the middle of February and the regular season ends in the middle of May.
This leaves likely one nice weather home series here in Minnesota the first or second weekend of May which ever is at home. I don't blame Minnesotans for struggling to support Big Ten baseball.

It is definitely a sport that has a huge boost geographically down south and out west. But I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to call Big Ten baseball an afterthought. Michigan and Maryland have both been very good on the national scale the last 3-4 years (Michigan lost in the CWS championship game in 2019).
There are dozens of D1 baseball prospects produced in Minnesota year after year (IIRC the number was about 50 total between 2021 and 2022). It's not like we can't produce viable talent in-state.
A good chunk of the cream of the crop of those guys end up going out-state to play because they feel they'll have a better opportunity to get better coaching and turn professional. That's not a geographical issue, that's a staffing/coaching issue. And if the Gophers aren't even sending staff to showcases in their own state... That's a pretty pathetic sign for Anderson IMO.
It's an issue of a lot of Big Ten universities not seeing much upside in supporting their program financially. Yes there will be occasional examples where a team does well for a period of time but overall it tends to not last.
Wisconsin hasn't had a team for the past 32 years (1991). The Gophers still have a team because of some of the tradition that was built in the 60s/70s and some of the alumni they have.
High School baseball players not surprisingly are going to want to play in warmer climates.
Since there isn't a lot of revenue for northern teams the universities aren't going to spend the money to compete.
Yes a lot of college sports aren't money generators but the difference with baseball is the uneven playing field of southern/western universities being willing to support their programs because there is some revenue to gain for them because they can get crowds of 5 to 10 thousand.
The Gophers could have all the best players and they still wouldn't draw much attendance because of the regular season being mid February to mid May hence not much upside.

I'm not necessarily concerned about their attendance. I get that living where we live they're going to have reduced attendance (when I've gone to games in the past the attendance was solid-certainly not like 10k people like LSU gets but it seemed like 1200-1500 people on campus). That, combined with playing some of their home schedule off campus at US Bank Stadium definitely impacts their attendance.
Allowing the program to become the laughingstock it has become the last couple years won't help an already subpar attendance either.
My initial comment was more about how bad the team has been the last few years (and the coaching in particular) than whether they'll catch LSU and Arkansas in attendance.
It's sad to see the state of both BB programs, the baseball team and perhaps to a lesser extent the wrestling team. The wrestling team is still very good but my perception (which could be wrong) is that they are no longer able to compete for the B1G nor the NCAAs the way they did during their run in the early 2000's.
My point is that since there isn't much upside the U isn't going out of their way to support the baseball team (get better coaching/provide more resources to scout and attract better players). I agree that is unfortunate but I understand why this is happening.

Big Ten Wrestling is crazy. IIRC they had 12 teams ranked in the top 25 including 7 of the top 13. They are not the top dog anymore - Penn State and Iowa have become the two primary national power house teams, but they still have a couple wrestlers each year that will contend for individual titles. Certainly not what it was in their peak but I think they're coming back around. I think there was a bit of a shakeup after the scandal with the previous coaching regime and they're trying to rebuild back to where they were. Not sure if they'll ever reach that peak again, though.
It's time for Anderson to ride out his pension in Florida.
His contract is up after this year and there is no way Coylr extends it.

The fact he wasn't forced into early retirement after last year is baffling.
Spencer Lee going for #4 gets stuck in the semi's by Ramos (Purdue) and decides to medical forfeit his next to matches to end up 6th place at 125. Maybe hurt his hand pouting and breaking his mom's glasses after being defeated.
Keep your stick on the ice...

He Sitka get no grief gor the Whalen pick. Whalen is the only reason anyone cares about Women's BB at all at the U it didn't even count as an after thought before her. She is an HOFer and teams in lower sports with no backing make moves like this all the time. The problem is hervonly chance at success was keeping the borders closed and that just isn't likely.
Ben Johnson he will take great over but I honestly don't think that was his choice in total. We won't know that until next year though when Johnson gets canned. I think a lot of factors went into that choice and much like the Brewster hire all of the factors were stupid. Here is hoping Dutcher still has the cheap Minnesota buyout still...
Whalen is Gopher legend. One of the all-time great Gopher athletes, but it was a huge gamble to hire her with zero coaching experience. She hadn't even been an assistant (as far as I know). Huge gamble that failed.
That said, the new coach looks like a GREAT hire (on paper at least).
Don't agree with this at all, but Coyle must not want to find new $$ to hire someone decent.

The team has been slightly better than last season but they're still 16-33 (they finished 16-36 last season) and largely an absolute disaster.
Seems crazy that they're not willing to fire the guy and hire somebody new unless they plan to just fold the program after next season.
I can’t pretend to say I care the slightest about gopher baseball, but it makes zero sense.

I think he signed an NIL deal with the WWE, so that may be the loophole that he needs to allow him to return to the U for 1 more year. If that is how he gets paid, it will be an interesting case for the NCAA and how the NIL works. Nobody knows shady deals like the WWE ?

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
I really hope that all this teasing on Twitter by Gable Steveson is just a bit to get people going. I don't see how he could get another year of NCAA eligibility but if he does and he goes to Iowa...I have NO issue with Gopher fans turning on him or hating on Iowa even more.
I don't see why he would tarnish is legacy as the best Gopher wrestler in program history by going to Iowa. I have no doubt that Tom Brands would take him in. Like I said I hope it's just a bit since he is training in Iowa City with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.

He might not return to Minnesota, but I don't think he would tweet that and go to Iowa because it seems completely out of his character.
