Someone threw out the name Brian Raabe as a potential replacement on a podcast I was listening to. Former great at the U, now a successful coach at Bethel. He is 54, so I'm not sure if the U would want to go with a guy in his 30's or 40's instead. I agree John Anderson has done a ton for baseball at the U, but the last few years have been brutal and hopefully he can realize it is time to move on.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
He got a 2 year extension over the winter so I wonder if it might come out next year is his last. I know Coyle doesn't want to fire him but it has to be obvious to him a change needs to happen somehow.

Last year should have been his last (if not before then). The best coach on that staff last season is now coaching with NDSU.
Not Gopher related, but I’m watching a little of Oregon State vs. Stanford baseball game. Oregon State pitching staff has two 6’7” guys, one 6’8” and a 7 footer.

With Matt Houk taking over at least in the interim, the program should be in great shape in the immediate future. I've only met him and his wife, who is also on the VB staff, in passing around town, but I can tell you that they're very passionate about the work they're doing here and if their coaching abilities match that passion, the team won't skip a beat when Hugh steps down.

I love the way Hugh coaches-- he is a transformational coach and is intent on developing the whole person and not just trying to win games. We really do have a good set of coaches throughout Gopher sports right now, particularly on the women's side.
Someone in the Strib article made reference to something that happened, however. Maybe it is sour grapes or something, but is there something in the background that is forcing this? Or is Hugh merely looking for another challenge or to spend time with family?

I can't imagine anything is coming from the U's side. He just signed a contract extension through 2025 in December. Guessing it either has to be something family related or he's got a chance to get back into the international coaching that he couldn't not take.
There is a big difference between an item in the article and wild conjecture in the article's comments.
My guess is he wants to spend more time with his family, the grind of coaching and related travel makes spending time with his relatively young family difficult. I have to wonder if his wife wants to join her family's business? My wife hasn't heard anything so this is pure speculation by me...

Is there a reason they do not have a Big Ten Volleyball tournament? It seems like every sport has a league tournament before the NCAA’s, but volleyball does not.
Seems like a good hire. Young and came from Washington who has had some success in the Pac-12. Not sure I know much about him, but the comments seem to be positive.

I like that Hugh is still on staff in the athletic department and he can help with recruiting connections, local VB scene, etc.
