Is that you, Bonin?

You’re not 7 feet tall anymore?
Since I have BTN+ for a month, I am watching the BB exhibition game against St. Olaf. At the beginning of the game, they gave the records between the teams. Gophers lead the series 5-1, but St. Olaf won the most recent game…
It was in 1921 and the score was 15-11….
Looks like another rebuilding year with young talent for both basketball teams and injuries plaguing one of them.
Tell me if you’ve heard this story before.
No one should expect much from the men's team despite a few promising recruits. How many games played returned from last year?
I'm reserving judgement on this team until I see what they look like with Battle. Battle is probably their best overall player. He is recovering from a foot injury. He got the walking boot off of his foot this week so hopefully that means his return is near.
With Cooper running the point, Carrington/Battle being the 2 guard/swing man and Garcia in the post they could have a pretty solid team. Payne and Ola-Joseph look pretty solid so far and Braeden Carrington made his Gopher debut last night.
Gophers drop a whopping 27 on Cal Baptist Sisters of the Poor in the first half and are blowing them out by 9.
1:30 left 3 point Gopher lead
1:00 left tie game
Gophers win in OT. Cal Baptist was 1.5pt favorites in the game, so technically we pulled the upset?
Battle was back in the lineup which was great to see. He had to kick some rust off though. He was like 4/16 from the field. The team also made just 11/20 free throws.
How bad are expectations when you're not favored against a team that's been in Div I for 5 seasons and I imagine 99% of fans east of Nevada have never heard of?

Cal Baptist beat Washington in their game previous to the Gophers game last night, which I assume impacted the spread.

Last couple minutes of regulation Battle was 0-5 with an air ball so there must be a lot of rust.
Look for Arkansas to be a big impact come March. They are a solid, young ball team. Would have won last night if they could hit their 3's and about a 2-minute stretch where the stripes couldn't figure things out. Creighton is solid as well and could be an impact come March. If I had to pick a Final 4 now... UNC, Houston, Kansas and Arkansas.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Woo pig sooie!!
Shocking that we can’t shoot from the field or from the FT line. Super athletic and big lineup that can’t actually put the ball in the basket.
This team may be tough to watch. I know it’s Bens 2nd year, but it feels like we’ve been rebuilding for years.
46% from FTs and 6/26 from 3 is not great.
Crowds like this certainly justify making the Gopher Hockey play Team USA at 3pm and not go head to head with this large crowd.

well said… I mentioned this over in the Gopher Hockey Schedule season thread.. I try not to be a complainer, but what a total bonehead move by the U.
Yikes I didn't realize it had gotten that bad.
That picture was taken 20 minutes before tipoff.

It filled in a bit more, but getting blown out by 21 early in the 2nd half won't help future attendance. I'm guessing it may be at 40-50% capacity at tip off.

This is tough to watch. Down 29 points with 8:35 left.
Michigan running circles around the Gophers who don't have the guards to keep up with them.

Gopher hoops played a hard fought game @ #14 Wisconsin last night. Ended up losing 63-60. Probably the most complete effort they've had this season against a pretty solid team. 20 turnovers for Minnesota to Wisconsin's 5 was the difference in the end.
The young guys seem to have improved quite a bit from the beginning of the season, which is a good sign.

I hadn’t watched in a while and they have def gotten better. With 4 minutes left we were down by 4 and both teams were shooting 44%, only difference they made more 3s. We had a chance to tie with 10 seconds left and they stole the ball from Cooper, who actually played really well. I think Battle was something like 5-15 so that was basically the difference.
Big Ten officiating is so bad. Back to back possessions with an awful no call (Garcia got hit about 3x on one shot attempted including right in the face) and then Cooper gets shoved off the ball on a drive and gets called for the foul.

Gophers lead 39-33 at half after finishing on a 13-2 run. Garcia and Battle both playing great ball.
Taurus Samuels hits a corner 3 with 5 seconds left to tie it. Overtime here we come.
Win or lose, this team is playing significantly better basketball so far in 2023 than the way they left off in 2022.
Gophers at OSU on a FS1 “All Access” telecast. Very interesting to see and hear both coaches during timeouts but also an iso camera with audio of them on the sideline…the whole game. I don’t think I’d want to see this all the time but some kind of hybrid with less of the iso camera might be fun. Ben getting bleeped more and more in TO huddles as the game goes on. Also means basically no commercials so prolly not realistic. Gophers have led the whole game, up 66-62 with 41 seconds left. Any B10 road win is a good one.

I have really enjoyed the setup for this. Easy to see why players would like playing for Ben.
Why is a guy shooting 42% from the line getting the ball in the last 30 seconds of the game?
Wow that was an awful foul call against OSU. Cooper going to the line after getting swatted.
Gophers go scoreless for the last 5 minutes including missing some free throws. OSU ties it with 8 seconds left, Gopher ball play designed to go to Battle but Cooper gets a clean run to the basket, gets his dunk try blocked all ball but refs call a foul. He makes the second FT for a 1 point lead. OSU gets some home cooking on the clock but only ends up giving Garcia 2 FT makes both for a 3 point win.
Gophers win 70-67 on the road against a very quality OSU team. Definitely benefitted from a terrible call at the end but still counts!
Why is a guy shooting 42% from the line getting the ball in the last 30 seconds of the game?
They actually did a good job of keeping the ball away from OSU to run clock off. I’d say more of why is a player who shoots 42% from the line even on the floor in that situation but I’m gonna assume it’s for defense.
Seeing more of Johnson makes it obvious why he’s gonna be successful. Cool to see the postgame locker room too.

Defense and ball-handling I assume. He's one of two primary guards basically.
The hoops team continues it's quest for the #1 pick Bedard. ?

The Barn is having a rough night.

Whew. 12 points in the first half. Now 44-19 with 12 minutes left.

Purdue is very good and Minnesota has no answer for them on either end of the floor.
And unfortunately, despite the effort, another "L". Gophers now 1-8 in the B1G.
Gophers hung in during the first half against Rutgers last night, but got vaporized in the second and lost 90-55. 7-14 overall and 1-10 in the B1G.
Fleck got a lot of grief with his "Year Zero" statement when he started and this is a very similar situation. It may even be fair to say Johnson had a Year (-1) or even (-2), there was nothing left nor anything in a pipeline when he started. I haven't watched much but from what I have seen there is hope simply because he can get players to give it all. He seems like a really good guy and coach and I'm certainly pulling for him.

They should be better next year barring losing any players slated for next year. What they can't seem to get away from his the injury bug.
