The final, and most important, of the summer girl’s “USA Hockey” national development camps, the Select 18 Camp, starts on Sunday and runs through August 9th. Out of this camp a team will be chosen for a three game series with Canada which will be played August 14, 15 and 17 in St. Catherines, Ontario. This team will also be the core of the U.S. team that will play in the IIHF Women’s World U18 Championship to be held January 4-12 in Vantaa, Finland.
Girls with flags are returning players from last year’s World Championships team.
Girls with pointing fingers are girls I believe the staff may be interested in.

Canada names the ROSTER for their U18 camp to select their team for the upcoming three game series with the U.S. freshman defender Chloe Primerano will take part along with recent commit Maddie McCullough. Former Gopher (now Clarkson) commits Sara and Kate Manness will also attend.
Development camp season is winding down. The National 15 Camp starts tomorrow in Oxford, Ohio. No immediate interest in these girls as they are all class of ‘27 or ‘28. Supposedly none of these players will move on to the Select 18 Camp, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a goalie move on. Seems like they like to have at least one young goalie to get some experience.
In the “blind squirrel finds nut” category a 15 camper goal tender is getting a shot at Select 18 this coming week. Apple Valley’s Finley Engfer, who was Apple Valley’s starting goalie this past season as a ninth grader, will be the only 2009 birth year goalie at the camp (and the only 2009 Minnesotan). Finley is a taller goalie at 5’11”.
Going through the Select 18 Camp roster I see one other 2009 birth year who was a late addition to the proceedings. Forward Adrianna Milani is a highly touted player from Oakville, Ontario. I’m guessing she has dual citizenship. Possibly trying the U.S. route as Canada never uses double under age players for the World U18 tournament.
Here’s a “Hockey News” STORY from last year on Ms. Milani.
Story on Bemidji class of ‘27 prospect Bailey Rupp who is in Lake Placid this week at the Select 18 camp.
I am really hoping that won't be the case. She's going to be a good one. I'm actually not sure whether I'd rather see her play for Wisconsin or Ohio State in that case. Neither of them would be better...maybe BU, Harvard, or BC will catch her eye?
Sorry if I didn’t make it clear. She has committed to wisconsin.
A “Hockey News” piece on the Canada U18 camp…
“Canada's Talent On Full Display As U-18 Camp Opens”
Through two inter-camp games recent commit Maddie McCullough leads the camp with three goals scored, and freshman defender Chloe Primerano has scored twice. They are the only multi goal scorers so far. One last game will be played tomorrow afternoon.
Competition in the U.S. camp finished up yesterday. Not sure, but probably a good chance the U.S. team for next week’s three game series with Canada is announced later today.

A few not returning from last year. Biggest surprises to me are Mary Derrenbacher, a North Carolina girl that plays at Shattuck, and Caroline Averill, a Massachusetts girl. Both were very productive in January’s World U18 Championship. Not a good showing for Minnesota.
https://www.therinklive.com/international/usa-hockey-unveils-u18-series-roster
And from “The Hockey News”: USA Hockey unveils U18 Series roster
I imagine Derrenbacher is hurt as she was originally named to the camp but did not participate.

Thanks, I didn’t do the research but thought that was a likely possibility.
Canada wins the first game of the three game U18 series with the U.S. Score was 4-2 (SCORING RECAP). Gopher freshman defender Chloe Primerano has two goals and an assist. forward recruits Bella Fanale (U.S., class of ‘25) and Maddie McCullough (Canada, class of ‘26) have a single assist apiece. The remaining two games are tomorrow and Saturday, both at 3:00 p.m. Games hosted by Canada in this series have historically been streamed for free. Not this year though, unless I missed it there is no streaming available.
Both Primerano and Fanale are captaining their respective countries.
Game two of the three game U18 series also goes to Canada 3-1
From “The Hockey News”: Canada Takes Another From USA In U-18 Series
The U.S. salvages game three of the three game U18 series with Canada. Following a 3-3 deadlock in regulation, the U.S. wins the long shootout.
I would expect a few changes for the Americans before January’s U18 worlds. Thought they went a little young here, but the youngest players put up a large share of the limited offense the U.S. generated. The leading scorers for the series were Gopher freshman Chloe Primerano and Ohio State recruit Maxine Cimoroni (both 🇨🇦) who both had five points.
I would expect with this series completed we might see some commitments start to show up with some of the ‘26s on these teams. I am mildly optimistic we may see three or possibly four commits out of this series. 🤞
USA Hockey-
Team USA opened the game with pace and grit, holding off Canada’s initial push. With 8:33 remaining in the period goaltender Morgan Stickney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made two point-blank saves to keep the game scoreless.
With 13:25 remaining in the opening frame, Sade Sandilands beat a screened Stickney with a rising shot from just inside the blue line to open a 1-0 lead for the home team.
The U.S. held the first power play opportunity of the evening but could not find the back of the net. Just three seconds after the U.S. power play ended, Team USA went on the kill, where a rebound popped out to an unmarked Stryker Zablocki who beat Stickney for the second tally of the game.
The U.S. responded with three unanswered goals in the second to enter the third period with a 3-2 lead. Just 2:25 into the second frame, Megan Healy (South Burlington, Vt.) got the U.S. on the board with a power-play marker, converting a shot from the high slot past the blocker of Alyssa Barrette. Sydney Stoughton (Mason, Ohio) tied the game with 4:52 remaining in the second, going top shelf on a 2-on-1 opportunity. Just 1:35 later, Annabelle Lovell (Hingham, Mass.) opened the first U.S. lead of the game, going bar down on a breakaway opportunity.
With the goalie pulled late in the third, Zablocki tied the game at 3-3 with 58 seconds remaining in the game on a scramble in front of the net. No teams scored in the 3-on-3 overtime, before Adrianna Milani (Toronto, Ont.) recorded the game winner in the seventh round of the shootout.
A side story from “The Hockey News”
If you don’t look too close you won’t notice that the above picture is of last year’s team 👀
For those that might be interested, I am continuing to update the above posts/lists of players attending the Select 18 camp and the USA/Canada series with new recruiting information as it becomes known. Obviously anything involving the Gophers will get new posts.
“Neutral Zone” put out their ratings for the recently completed U.S. vs. Canada three game u18 series. They didn’t rate all of the players, just the top few on each team. As it is a pay site I won’t go into detail, but here are the players they rated.

Labor Day weekend is kind of the start for the fall girl’s hockey recruiting evaluation season. The two tournaments going on starting tomorrow are in Boston (NAHA) and Pittsburgh (PIP). Only a couple of committed recruits taking part, unless I’m missing somebody. Avery Hovland is on the NAHA White team in the NAHA tournament, and Bella Fanale plays for the BK Selects team in the PIP tournament. Minnesota will have teams in all of the age groups in both tournaments.
Links to follow both tournaments:
The GIRL’S FALL ELITE LEAGUE kicks off its schedule this evening with a couple of games at the Bloomington Ice Garden. The only two current recruits involved in the league are both skating with the MN Elite Black-Royalty team. They are goal tender Layla Hemp (Minnetonka) and defender Sydney Bailey (Rogers), both class of 2025 recruits.
The league season leads up to the Tradition NIT tournament which runs October 17-20 this year at The Super Rink and Fogerty Arena. The NIT traditionally brings in much of the top high school aged talent from around North America.
I’m getting almost as restless for a new commitment on the women’s side as we all are on the men’s.
In the mean time, the big recruiting event this weekend is the STONEY CREEK UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE held in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Gopher recruits on display include Sienna D’Alessandro (John Abbott College), Bella Fanale (BK Selects) and Maddie McCullough (Durham West).
From “The Hockey News”: Annual Stoney Creek Showcase Brings North America's Best Young Talent Together
Here’s the recruit list as it presently stands with links for the upcoming season. Links for local high schools won’t be ready until late October.
2025
D Sydney Bailey (Rogers)
F Sienna D’Alessandro (John Abbott College) From Pointe-Claire, Quebec
F Bella Fanale (Bishop Kearney Selects) From Webster, New York
G Layla Hemp (Minnetonka) Sister of Gopher forward Peyton Hemp
F Avery Hovland (NAHA) From Fargo, North Dakota
F Tereza Plosová (Djurgårdens IF) From Liberec, Czechia
2026
F Maddy McCullough (Durham West) From Newmarket, Ontario
Gopher coaches Frost and May down in Faribault last night for the Girls Elite League game between Shattuck and the Royalty team. Commits Layla Hemp and Sydney Bailey play for Royalty. Class of ‘26 possible targets include Lorelai Nelson (Edina) for Royalty and Shattuck players Emma Cerruti (Norwell, Massachusetts), Kylie Amelkovich (Chicago area), Sloane Hartmetz (Philadelphia area) and Haley Box (Eden Prairie). All five of these girls played for the U.S. team in the recent three game series against Canada.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
That was quick, there wasn’t any real evidence of interest in either direction until about two days ago. She is the sister of Boston College/Ohio State alumni Hadley Hartmetz who also played at Shattuck. A smaller defender at 5’3” she is a shifty skater with great hands. As I said in the previous post she is from the Philadelphia area and played in the Jr. Flyer program before moving to Shattuck.
In 55 games last season with Shattuck’s U16 team she scored 19 goals and had 36 assists.
2025

D Katya Sander (Holy Family)
First in-state commitment of the 2026 cycle: D Katya Sander of Holy Family.
This one has seemed likely for quite a while. Nice size (5’8”/160), athletic, strong skater. Can skate the puck, but more often makes the good pass. Lists Chanhassen as home although I believe she played her youth hockey for Minnetonka. Has been at Holy Family since her freshman year.
I'm kind of expecting one more defender for this class, although no one has ever gotten rich following my tips.

🤬 Wrong again
Emma Cerutti, a Massachusetts defender who the Gophers seemed to be solidly in on winds up heading to Madison. Maybe the plan all along was two defenders. We can only guess at what goes on, and in the end it’s all just a guess. I would guess now that the staff is done with defenders and I’m not expecting a goalie this year. So maybe two or three forwards to top off this class?
A follow up on the Stoney Creek tournament I mentioned last week: “ Stoney Creek Again Showcases Top Prospects, RHA Kelowna Wins”
The RHA Kelowna team will be among the TEAMS in town October 17-20 for the Girls Elite League NIT Tournament.
Box to Wisconsin. Frost better keep hitting that Canada pipeline because the top in state kids want nothing to do with us.
If the player's under 5'5" I just assume Frost isn't going to land them. Even now with Mlynkova on the roster. Shorter players have a better history at other schools.
A lot of angst in the air tonight on the board.
Doesn’t matter which gender you follow.

How tall is Sloane Hartmetz?
Things a little slow on the recruiting front. Mainly waiting to see how things shake out for probably at least two forwards for the ‘26 class. I’m hopeful for something soon on one prospect (not local), but all the big players also seem involved so no guarantees.
In the meantime here’s something fairly recent on ‘25 commit Bella Fanale. She’ll be in town in a couple weeks with her BK Selects team for the Fall Elite League NIT Tournament.
The Girls Elite League NIT tournament starts a week from today (FULL SCHEDULE) in Blaine at the Super Rink and Fogerty Arena. Happy to see they will have a tournament PROGRAM this year with commitment information.
commits that will be there:
- Layla Hemp (MN Elite Black - Royalty) ‘25
- Sydney Bailey (MN Elite Black - Royalty) ‘25
- Bella Fanale (BK Selects 19U) ‘25
- Avery Hovland (NAHA White) ‘25
- Sloane Hartmetz (Shattuck Prep) ‘26
- Katya Sander (MN Elite Silver - MSP) ‘26
NAHA will play the Shattuck Prep team Thursday October, 17th down in Faribault at 4:15 p.m. in an exhibition not listed on the schedule.
Wrote a little on the NIT tournament and the Gopher recruits that will be playing. Thought I’d throw a few things out on possible future targets.
There were seven players on the U.S. team that played Canada in the three game series back in August that were class of ‘27 or younger. Five of those players will be playing in the NIT tournament.
D Chyna Taylor (Lovell Academy) ‘27 From Louisville, Kentucky
F Jane Daley (Shattuck) ‘28 From Medfield, Massachusetts
F Anabelle Lovell (Lovell Academy) ‘27 From Hingham, Massachusetts
D Faith Baratta (Lovell Academy) ‘27 From Naples, Florida
F Sydney Stoughton (Lovell Academy) ‘27 From Mason, Ohio
The Lovell girls will be playing on their 16u team. Lovell Academy has been around for a few years as a training program for boys and girls, but kind of jumped out of the shadows last spring at the USA Hockey Nationals 14u tournament as a power. Despite Lovell’s star power, Chicago Mission won that national 14u tournament. I’m not that familiar with Mission’s girls at that age group, but a large portion of that group has moved up to Mission’s 16u team that will be at the NIT. Jane Daley, the one non-Lovell player on the above list plays for Shattuck’s 16u team. She is a tremendous player and is only not on the Prep team because of age, not talent. For my money I think she might be the best high school age player playing in the state this year.
If you’re looking for the top local girls in the ‘27 and ‘28 classes you want one of these teams.
The Silver team has a few class of ‘26 players including future Gopher Katya Sanders.
A couple outstate girls to remember are Bailey Rupp (Bemidji) ‘27 on the Northern Elite 16u Green team and Taylee Manion (Proctor/Hermantown) ‘28 on the Northern Elite 19u team.

Looks like this probably isn’t happening. I’ll tell the name as this plays out. If this does indeed fall through I’m not sure where the staff goes from here. The forward prospects seem deeper for the class of ‘27. Do they bank spots for next year? There seemed to be some preliminary interest in a couple of European forwards for ‘26, but I’m not sure if anything’s taken off there or not.

Question for you...Is Hayley McDonald is 2026 recruit?
Question for you...Is Hayley McDonald is 2026 recruit?
Hayley is a ‘26 recruit. She is also the recruit I’ve been waiting on.
@iceburg She looks like a good recruit. They'll need someone to make up for the loss of Murphy's offensive production.
@iceburg I really thought when Primerano came into this program that there would be at least several high end commits itching to play on this team.
This seems to be a bit of a setback as it seems a lot of time and effort was used. Hopefully there will be a plan “B” that I’m not seeing at present.
The Canadian 2024 National Women’s Under-18 Championship starts on Sunday and runs through November 9th in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Maddie McCullough, a class of ‘26 commit, is the only current recruit involved in the event. She is on the Ontario Red team. You can follow the proceedings HERE.
