Cammy was an incredible Shattuck/junior hockey talent, just didn’t translate to higher levels. If you’re Don you recruit him 100 times out of 100.
Agreed, it's just more to the point about past results not necessarily equaling future results when projecting the growth of a player and comparing two guys (one playing up and one not). There's a reason coaches have these guys play in the USHL for a year unless they're a first round pick or what have you.
With Cammy he just didn't hit a huge growth spurt and not only was undersized but wasn't an elite skater to make up for it nor did he play like Kyle Rau.

To be honest, Cammy didn't seem to enjoy hockey at all really

He was a bit of an oddball.

Didn’t know that, I guess I’d need to learn more about it to really have an opinion.
Kinda makes me think of Kessel and how supposedly in Toronto he’d be whining about injuries before games and the team doctor had to coax him into playing. And yet he was the Ironman in consecutive games played despite not wanting to 😆 (not to mention a very productive player)
Sam Spehar appears to be back on the market. Hasn’t done enough to warrant an offer but as a legacy I thought it was worth noting.
Spehar no longer committed to Denver
Quote: Chill KesselSpehar no longer committed to Denver
It would be fun to have the Spehar boys in maroon and gold but we’re pretty booked through the next couple years, and still saving room for 2010s like McKinnon, Buttweiler, Stevens, Thompson.
Quote: Jankwi01@maroon_and_gold is buttweiler his real name.
Henry Buttweiler of Alexandria, MN. Made the USNTDP U17. Very good player.

From a sentimental side, maybe, but the facts are he’s listed at 5’8” 176 lbs & is 19 years old. And in 2 years of USHL play, he’s averaging just slightly above .5 points per game. So what’s the line from Risky Business (paraphrased)…”Sam’s not exactly Gopher material”.
Didn't Spehar send his kids all over the place to move them up the ladder? One kid at Chaska and another at Tonka? Now to South Dakota, and then to some other place?
I'd honestly pass on that alone. Gives me Lucius family vibes where if they don't get want they want they'll take their ball and go.

But certainly "Princeton can use a man like Sam"...
So, he's listed (or I've seen him listed ) as 4.5 star recruit --- the whole "star" system seems very inaccurate in hockey vs. football (5 stars are gold, 4 stars almost always solid). Maybe it's when they get rated they're young relative to pre-college development, and the fact that they play Juniors before college which gives a better indication of what their actual talent level is.

they're typically rated early and it never gets adjusted depending on the site

Correct and totally agree. This is what I was trying to say when Sam Spehar initially committed to Denver but that was back during Bob’s cold spell in recruiting so people weren’t so keen to agree. Some pitchforks on Twitter.
Technically no longer committed to Miami. I’m honestly surprised more kids aren’t burned out by the pressure and expectations that are put on them at a young age. Mature thing for him to do.

I think many are, you just don't hear about them unless they are of a D1 tier. My nephew is going through similar right now where he was really trying to play college (he's a fringe D1 kid that has had interest from St Cloud, etc.) and now has just burned out as he heads into his Sr year to where he will likely just play this year then call it quits because he just can't keep doing this schedule. We'll see if that's what he sticks with, but the number of kids in this pathway (sports in general) who develop minimal other skills/hobbies because of playing their sport year round is worrisome to me (and I'd assume many other people).
Do really like that the Strib is running this article as this choice should be normalized
Owen Moulten made the Shattuck Prep team as a sophomore. Good indicator of a future star in the making. One to keep an eye on. Drew Daley did this last year.
Jack Keiser was kept on the Bantam team, he is going to put up video game numbers as maybe the best ‘12 in the US right now.

Two names to keep in mind for sure.
2010 - Joey Cullen
2011 - Owen Moulton
2012 - Jack Keiser
If we could run the gauntlet on all three that would be huge.
It's not often you see a 17 for 1 trade. 😀

Henry Lechner looks to no longer be committed to St Thomas. Big start to the year with 12 points in the first 6 games for Cedar Rapids to currently lead the USHL. I’m sure he’s getting a lot of interest from the usual top schools but a good older player who’s probably more ready to come in next year than Conboy, Jarvis, etc.

Kind of booked at forward for the next couple seasons, but good player.
I get what you’re saying but I gotta disagree, besides Katz they are all 17 or younger right now. Whether it’s Lechner or somebody else I think Larson will want to bring in another older forward like he did with Lofgren on defense this year.

Odds Joey Cullen is on the team next year are very high.

Odds are there will be some early signings. Townsend, Harris, and Pritchard are all non Larson recruits and could be pushed to the portal, plus Ludtke who graduates. Larson can’t be nice guy Bob and stop recruiting and let the team fill up with a bunch of 3/4th liners combined with a bunch of 18 years olds again because he’s afraid to cut someone. If you have to cut Townsend to bring in Joey or cut Harris to bring in Schneider or cut Pritchard to bring in Conboy so be it but you can’t stop constantly recruiting.

I think Nevers, and probably a few other guys (like Harris and Townsend) would be encouraged to enter the portal long before Pritchard.
Who signs early besides Ziemer? I guess the two names to watch will be Mooney and Burnevik but I see them on the team in 2027-28.
Quote: maroon and goldWho signs early besides Ziemer? I guess the two names to watch will be Mooney and Burnevik but I see them on the team in 2027-28.
Would surprise me if it’s anyone other than Ziemer yeah. Have been saying it awhile. Mooney they’re going to let bake as long as they can to try get bigger/heavier. Burnevik doesn’t seem like an NHL level skater but I guess he could just want to move on (like Kurth did).
forward group is going to more be via attrition if there’s new faces and I’d be surprised if there’s not some or some guys “graduate” early. I wouldn’t be shocked if some guys transfer down for bigger roles too
dunno if I agree on Joey being here next year. I get he’s not going to play a bunch of years, but kind of depends how aggressive dad wants to be with his development as playing your DY in college hockey is a big ask for anyone. His frame filled earlier so he may be capable, but still has some growing/thickening out to do

I mean I literally mentioned Townsend and Harris first and if they get pushed out and they bring in better players next year B. Cullen and Nevers would slide down to 14/15th and Pritchard would slide down to 13th. Nevers is a legacy player who probably won’t be cut, just like John Mittelstadt stuck around while better players hit the portal because he accepted his role. Pritchard probably doesn’t want to be a 13th forward and could get ice time somewhere else. It’s not always about who’s better or worse, it’s about accepting a role. Regardless, people are getting hung up on who signs or who gets cut, my point is that every year they need to be ok with cutting the players, whoever those may be, that aren’t contributing enough and also be prepared for unexpected signings. Right now Willis and Joey would be 17 and every other forward besides Katz would be 18. So I just disagree that Larson should stop recruiting because people think certain players aren’t flight risks. Every drafted junior especially ones that played a year of juniors like Burnevik or Hendrickson are flight risks, period, dozens sign every year. Not thinking players will sign because they’re not NHL players is how you end up with Finn McLaughlin or bringing in Moe and Rombach too early.

Brooks Cullen really impressed me over the weekend in the J Mittelstadt role of fourth line forward/center. I wouldn't be upset with four year of him holding down the bottom 6 forwards.

Definitely a strong possibility for sure and probably what ends up happening. I just think the timing of Henry decommitting after such a fast start and I’m sure is getting a lot of calls from top schools who probably weren’t recruiting him the first time around leads me to believe he may be looking at other schools. Also, Cory Laylin follows him on insta and probably played a part in recruiting him to St Thomas originally so maybe he’s wanting to follow Laylin and not his brother. He’s 6’2, set a scoring record at Holy Angels then almost a point per game in his first USHL season and now very early but leading the USHL. I just think the gophers are at least interested in adding an older proven player, whether that’s Lechner or not. If all the gophers lose next year is Ludtke and maybe Ziemer than it’s whatever bring in Katz and Joey or whoever but I think there are more players from this years team that Larson would have like to get rid of but didn’t want to totally shake up and overhaul the team and will be gone next year and I don’t think he’s going to bring in 4 or 5, 17 to 18 year old forwards.

Not even saying I agree with bringing in Joey for his draft year(I don’t), just saying I think it happens. It’s becoming more common to play your draft year in NCAA if you’re a top 10 talent. Plus the brothers have said they really wanna play together; I don’t think Wyatt is a flight risk after his sophomore year but you never know I guess.
Plus people forget Wyatt actually accelerated to even be on the team this year, so the family has experience with the whole thing. They might look at it and say, if Wyatt can play college his senior year of HS, why can’t Joey?

Wyatt played two at the ntdp though And is here post DY (which is obviously part of how young he is in his draft year). I think that’s the big difference.
Think some of this kind of depends how the ntdp looks for next year and if there’s the mass attrition again.
i agree with you they may do that, but Joey has a great option with the ntdp for next year unless he either explodes and is very ready or something goes wrong at the ntdp and they want him to move on

Lofgren is a freshman who's played 2 NCAA games and he's also our leading scorer currently. His play over the weekend was very boom-bust, which is totally normal for a freshman. There is something there. Unless ofc you'd rather go back to Rombach playing 17min a game.
I'm sure back in 2019-20 you were whining about how LaCombe was a bust too

Don’t waste your time. Nothing but five straight national championships (all won by Michigan) would make him happy. Even then I’m sure he’d find something to criticize.
