Quote:
In addition to Hughes and Pastujov, the other NTDP player with an A rating is center Chaz Lucius (6-1, 185). The 17-year-old had two assists, two shots on goal and plus-2 rating in the win.

A knee injury kept Lucius out until Feb. 19, but in 12 games with the NTDP U-18 he has scored 18 points (13 goals, five assists).

"I haven't been around a lot of guys who can shoot the puck the way [Lucius] does; he has that release and he's also got that ability to make plays," Muse said.

Knies continues his hot streak. 2 goals last night, and he has scored goals in 5 straight games and has 12 points in those 5 games.

He looks like Reedy. Maybe not a great skater but probably good hands and can put the puck in the net.

We are always stacked with guys that have magical hands in HS/juniors but not elite skating. That's why some guys can't make the transition to college and fizzle out when they get to campus, or stay in the ECHL/AHL. His skills are good enough to prevent that, but we should get at least two years out of him because of the skating.

Based on the "cycle offense" comment and his grade A shot, I would expect to see him on the ice for power plays.

The comments on his skating are a bit concerning, but that was said of Johnny Pohl, as well, and he turned out to be a great college hockey player. Brodzinski has a great shot but comparatively poor skating speed. I think he broke out in the second half of the season, and I have high hopes for him next year. Lucius, it appears, is more highly thought of than either of these two.

If Lucius is top 15 in the draft, that puts him in an entirely different category. If he earns a "C" in skating and is still a first rounder, that speaks highly of everything else he brings to the table.

Noticed Huglen’s social media does not have his commitment post anymore. Hopefully doesn’t mean anything as his line chart from Fargo still said MN. Don’t believe he has signed NLI.

I am no draft expert. I don't pay attention to recruits very much before they come to the Gophers. But your last sentence sums up my thoughts when I read the skills summary. It appears he has room to improve and some time in college may benefit Chaz and the Gophers.

I know there we concerns by some that he may never step foot on campus.

I have noticed that it wasn't there for a while. I'm not sure if he ever had it on it though, but he certainly could have. He also doesn't appear to be someone who posts on twitter that much. I don't see any new followers that would alarm me... yet. A kid from up north who plays for Fargo and who's GM is a former Whioux always leaves a doubt in my mind. Just get the NLI signed...

Thats good to know. I know he used to have it up there, no idea when it came down. He has done some interviews somewhat recently and talked about Gophers. Hopefully we'll see an NLI soon.

First rounder status didn't get Ryan Johnson much power play time as a freshman. Hoping the Lucius kid has the tools to play right away.

Someone close to the program in Ann Arbor told me that Chaz needs some work on the defensive end and also needs to learn to avoid hits. Says he takes some big hits regularly. Would be good if he spent a couple years in Bob's system to help with the defensive holes in his game.

Yes, and in Bob's system he may not initiate many hits either. :)

As well as a couple of years in the weight room to build muscle and strength.

Now that Burke is in the portal -- I wonder if we'll see either Strobel or Braccini or Pinoniemi enroll next fall.

Also starting to see a couple Minnesota kids doing USHL after now including Luke Mittelstadt and Brody Lamb.

Why would you do that instead of a one year rental that can contribute immediately and have them come in when they should a year later?

I think Strobel would be better served with a full year of USHL, but Braccini or Pinomiemi are almost 20-years-old already and the depth chart is starting to look pretty full from my perspective.

McLaughlin, Blake 21.2 years old

Walker, Sammy 21.9 years old

Meyers, Ben 22.4 years old

Perbix, Jackson 20.6 years old

Brodzinski, Bryce 20.7 years old

Sorenson, Jonathan 21.6 years old

Nelson, Jaxon 21 years old

Schmidt, Colin 21.3 years old

Nevers, Mason 20 years old

LUCIUS, Chaz 18 years old

KNIES, Matt 18.5 years old

PITLICK, Rhett 20.2 years old

HUGLEN, Aaron 20.1 years old

BROZ, Tristan 18.5 years old

PINONIEMI, Garrett 19.8 years old

Braccini, Strobel, Warner, and Mittelstadt might not be Gophers because Miller, Kurth, Lucius, and Snuggerud are going to want to come in fall of 22 (with Lamb getting a year in the USHL).

With 6 forwards leaving and 5 slotted to come in you’d like to bring in one more. If I were to guess it’d be Braccini and let Pinoniemi develop one more year in the USHL instead of getting a handful of games on the 4th line.

There’s been talk on here about Warner maybe not ever making it to dinkytown but I hope that isn’t the case because it’s clear from watching him in high school that he’s quite the player. And from what I can tell the situation with him this year regarding a very low number of games played is largely out of his control.

Pino needs all the time in juniors he can get, physically. Strobel and Braccini could come in and play as fourth liners next year if you need them to.

I would expect these forwards to come in this fall. Lucius, Knies, Broz, Pitlick, and Huglen. Then, if a high scoring transfer is available, ( prefer someone with 2 years left ) go with him, otherwise I would bring in either Braccini ( preferred) or Pinoniemi. Just need to remember who will most likely leave after next season up front as well. Walker, McLaughlin, and mostly likely Meyers and maybe Brodzinski. Would you rather have Braccini or Pinoniemi get their feet wet for a year, or let them grow in the USHL?

Let them grow in the USHL and bring in a transfer that can contribute to title contention.

Only way Brodz leaves after next year is to transfer. Nelson is more likely than him to take the next step and be ready for the AHL. Lucius is also a one and done risk if the wrong people get in his ear.

U18 coach talked about Lucius--

Was impressed with how hard he worked to get back

Said Chaz is someone who wants the puck in big moments

Then they talked to Chaz--

Injury happened when he took a puck to a knee a few years ago. Fluke injury. Lingering injury. Had to do with a bone in his knee. Had surgery to fix it. He went into more details about it.

Could not skate or walk for 3 months.

Greatest asset is his shot and feels he is under rated as a passer.

Always wanted to be a Gopher

Really good interview and good info. Sounds like a really good, well spoken kid.

Rhett Pitlick has not played for Tri City for the past 2 weeks. I assume some kind of injury/illness.

Knies now has 9 goals and 8 assists in his last 8 games.

Another goal on Sunday for Knies. 10 goals and 8 assists now in last 9 games. Still no Pitlick.
