SNUGGY again!!! His shot is lethal!!!
Snuggy 2 St. Thomas 0
To say the ice sheet at Mariucci appears STRIKINGLY DIFFERENT from past seasons is a major understatement. The reduction in the depth of the corners is particularly dramatic. Should result in a much quicker (reaction time) & more action packed game. The days of playing home games on a BANDY sized ice sheet are at long last…OVER! lol
3-0. Lamb. Hockey game!
Nice sweep before next week’s chaos begins
I’m as big a fan of Chesley as anyone else on here but tbh this wasn’t his best weekend. The good thing is I don’t see that being an issue for him going forward. He’s the kind of player who will shake it off and get better very quickly. Besides, I think next weekend will suit him and his play style just fine.
No Battle Hymn tonight? Is that because they didn't win both in regulation?
Different arenas? I dunno.
But all is right in the world at this moment.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Good win. Thought this was Pino’s best night as a Gopher. The defense is a little scary right now but that’s to be expected.

Pino looks noticeably bigger and stronger. Hopefully that’s the key to unlocking his offense.

That is what I was told.
When I wrote after last evening that I was looking for a shutout from the Closer, I was speaking to the Minnesota D!
Go Gophers!
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
I really like the reconfigured Mariucci
Both of Snuggie's goals tonight were out of the net before the goalie moved
#5 plays like he's a Jr
Once Moore figures out the college game he's going to be scary. Tends to skate into trouble and I bet film sessions will focus on how to use his teammates
I swear Close's heartbeat never breaks 80
Huglen is as good a two way player MN has ever had
MN is too cavalier with the puck in its zone, really need to get better at getting after the puck hard and clearing the zone when you can.
Night and day difference in the forwards tonight, back checked really hard and created a lot of chances in transition.

Fun night at the rink. Lot of little things to fix but in Bob we trust. The student section needs a leader. They were pretty tame all night
I notice the goals are not being knocked off by the goalies in the new rink. Advantage Gophers! Great game tonight, Moore looks like a video game turned on fast speed, the way he skates around out there. Can't wait for next weekend already.
Go Gophers!
Funny story about tonight, but not on the ice: we were sitting in front of a family with 2 kids, the youngest not quite 3. He was yelling loudly and happy. I asked him, what’s your favorite part of the game? Without missing a beat he says, the cheerleaders! ?.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.

We haven’t seen Michigan or Ohio State yet.
Keep your stick on the ice...

There’s a grown man, maybe more that’s pure reason to be at the game is for the cheerleaders.

Loved the teams defensive response tonight. Exactly what I wanted to see from them.

Came here to say the same thing about the goal staying on. However, we haven’t hit the B1G schedule yet and IIRC, Michigan and a few others were frequent offenders. That will be the true test.
Edit: Gator beat me to it
I know it's just one series, but Snuggerud is shaping up to be an outstanding weapon this season. He was so painfully close to getting the hat trick with that shot at the open net at the end.
Now that we know we can rely on him, let's see what our other guys can do in the coming weeks.

The goals were great. Everyone expects that with his shot talent.
I may be picky, but I was hoping to see a more complete player coming back for his second year: better puck control, better back checking, and better overall defensive coverage. Four goals in two games is a great start, but it is against St. Thomas, a much improved team but a team in its 3rd year of D1 Hockey existence. We will see how the season progresses with these factors.
I thought the team defensive coverage was better in game 2, but clearly has a ways to go. Close covered up for few mistakes tonight than Friday, and Justen had a much better game in net overall. I thought we played much more controlled offensively, taking the chances when it was there and we created solid scoring chances.
We will learn more after next week's series for sure.
@skiumahlaw in the front row wearing his SJU hockey jersey is elite level trolling.

Parrish is a lot of things...a tool isn't one of them. He is legit one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met...even before he got sober. Ask around you won't give meant people who have a bad thing to say about him and I suspect you wouldn't either if Woog hadn't been an idiot when recruiting him.
I'll just add that you have to take everything he says with a grain of salt... the guy gets a kick out of it with the Gophers, it's part of the bit. I wish he'd add a little more insight and a little less color though, he certainly knows enough about the game to mix in some John Madden style explanations.

Well, I was thinking at the X that he (and others) might be missing Faber and co. just a little bit, but, as you alluded to, this is a process, so we'll have to see next weekend.

Totally agree with you that a lot of Gopher fans probably won’t acknowledge this as a true rivalry but I could see the players and both respective student bodies really getting into it. A lot of the students and players for both schools come from the metro and probably already know each other or party together on the weekends (the party part probably pertains more to the students). Will this “rivalry” ever become like us vs UND, Michigan, Wisconsin, or UMD? No, of course not. But this should be a fun matchup going forward.
Fans and history make a rivalry... obviously history will take a while, but I have no doubt that the UST fans will make this one a fun event every match-up as they love their Tommies.
I won't say it can't be a rivalry. The seed is there, same metro area. BUT, if UST turns out to be a doormat (unlikely) or there isn't a big series/ZOMG playoff game...it'll take a lot of time to possibly have a rivalry. As of now, it's just the new kid on the block.

If this is meant to be a shot at me, you should be aware that I'm still grieving the loss of my one of my best friends who was an alum of theirs.

The biggest difference between the two games. The forwards were much more responsible tonight.Night and day difference in the forwards tonight, back checked really hard and created a lot of chances in transition.
As fans, we were spoiled last season. All six defensemen could skate or pass the puck out quickly to start the transition. This team won't have that awe factor, but I'm hoping they'll figure out their own style of play.
St. Thomas won't be a pushover for anyone this year if they keep playing like this.

He may look like skiumahlaw…but it was not in fact @skiumahlaw in the SJU jersey…….?
but nonetheless his fam did do a good job trolling!

I think he is still trying to find his legs. He is great in the studio.

They do? Not from what I hear about their attendance at games that don't involve SJU...their football stadium holds like 5k and is rarely filled.
They definitely played a lot better on Saturday. A lot of turnovers Friday that needed to be cleaned up. Snuggerud is a beast. Such a nice shot. I know it's early, but we need others to step it up. I wisjmh Cooley and Knies would have came back. Imagine the possibilities. But a win is a win
A couple of thoughts from last night--
Snuggy just keeps doing Snuggy things. The SOL line is fun to watch.
Lamb is definitely on pace to really shine this year.
Rinzel really stood out on defense.
Pitlick is like the Tasmanian Devil out there. Always buzzing around.
The students were out in full force, but a bit quiet. Maybe because there was little scoring to get them riled up.
I was a bit disappointed that the All American wall has not been updated (that I could see). Maybe it was because of the rink construction and they didn't have a chance with all of the dust flying around. I hope it is done by the next series.
Getting out of the parking lot was fine, but the traffic getting out of Dinkytown seemed to be heavier than normal.
The Halloween Scream Town on 212 is a cash cow. There was a line of cars almost 2 miles long last night as we drove by.
There was a horrible accident on 212 at the construction area in Cologne. By the way it looked, lives could have been lost. I hope not.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
Thoughts on the weekend - Good response from Friday to Saturday but our defensive inexperience is showing, as expected. Rinzel very active, Pitlick fast and furious, Moore faster and more furious(er?) but needs time to adjust to the college game and use his feet within the play, 4th line a positive, Pino improved but ability to move the puck seems so so? Brodz not as noticeable as I would have thought, Fish is pretty solid and physical, Snuggy is Snuggy and Close is Close. Also seemed that Nelson has made some nice plays at times but then at other times completely defensive. Is that just me? Huglen YAY and Kurth also looking pretty good. Interested to see how our kids do in the vomitorium next weekend. Very different game than the Tommies
No Battle Hymn tonight? Is that because they didn't win both in regulation?
Both Vegs & I were asked about this before the end of the game. And to if they should play the Battle Hymm or not. We said yes and thought they were going too. But it didn't happen.

Do we know which defenseman was injured last night? Bob was just on WCCO and mentioned the injury.

Assuming he’s just talking about Koster right?
He said it was a new injury. More details would be known tomorrow.

It was perfect. It is always fun to watch Bob's reaction to one of Jess Myers off the wall questions.

@mg-since-forever I agree with all your points particularly the Nelson observation. He has so many tools and I’ve always been routing for him to have success.
that said he’s a little too nonchalant at times and doesn’t attack the puck. There’s times that he coasts too long and just lets the puck play out instead of going to get it. It’s great to have him back along with 22 but part of me really wants to see them apart due to coasting too much (both).
There’s no doubt that both are critical elements to the success of the team and I can’t wait to see them get rolling
He said it was a new injury. More details would be known tomorrow.
We have a good morning with the announcement of two new commitments and then we get this news. Why can’t we just be able to enjoy some good news for once.

Did he talk about the severity of it?

I heard Chesley.
Keep your stick on the ice...
This is a great pic, I'm assuming by @jupiter. The couple in the center, if the one's head wasn't cut off. And the young man to their right with the fist pump. Along with Snuggerud's celebration.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Some brutal calls by the refs this past weekend. At least they were consistent and called them on both teams.
@puckluck Yeah I agree that he has more to offer. Almost seems like he is playing the role he is supposed to play (or feels like he is supposed to play) but has pretty quick hands, good shot, and is a good positional player. I also used to think he coasted a bit and maybe does but I think some of that is a little bit deceptive. He is much faster with that huge stride than many people think so he can get into the play quickly when he feels he should. Given the inexperience of most of our D core maybe he is taking the defensive center very seriously. Might need that next weekend.
