Game over, OSU wins 6-4.

Nobody was great tonight but the first line was pretty invisible. Not what I’d expect out of them.
On to tomorrow. Revenge!
lets hope the gophs bring some grit tomorrow. still a long season ahead
Upper classmen have to get in their roles and lead. It’s early and all that matters is staying in the top 10 for a late run. Drop some and learn. Like how to play D.
On Oct 30th 2021, the Gophers were 5-3. On April 7th they were in Boston. Do they have things to clean up? Yes. They will be fine.
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
I know things got crazy last Saturday, Cooley was tossed and multiple guys sat for penalties. But through seven games so far I’m much more in favor of the 77-92-81 line. I’ve seen little impact, at least when it matters, from our current “top line”. Frustrating night to be sure but this is still the same team that beat Kato 4-1 and dug in for a very impressive comeback win against NoDak last Friday, and almost Saturday. We knew they would take their lumps, tonight was tough to watch, but I have confidence in this team and the staff to turn it around for tomorrow night. Pat Micheletti himself said, back September that there would be some clunkers but by new year’s this would be the best team in the nation. I still believe that will be 100% true.
Yeah the top line is loaded with talent but it might be better to spread that out a little more. Idk, guessing they’ll figure it out one way or the other.
During the post game radio interview with coach Motzko Wally wanted to talk about some of the positives he saw but coach wasn't really having it saying they had a few good moments but overall they were too cute and need to work harder.
I think some of the issues we see early in the season happen every year because we are always a young team. Freshmen aren't used to the style you have to play in D1 hockey especially against tough non conference opponents/big 10 play.
I’ve been watching for about 4 min and this announcer need to go to hell.
He sounds like he’s trying too hard, like a shock jock radio announcer voice.
The TV play by play guy was awful. He had a very fake sounding voice with cheesy delivery. The stadium announcer needs to be fired. It angered me how obnoxious he got at times. Raised my blood pressure listening to him scream.
That was brutal all across the board. Very maddening. They better bounce back tomorrow.
Too early to say goaltending a big issue?
The most disappointing part about tonight was that we gifted OSU two goals and they won by two. Who knows what would have happened had that not occurred, but it's hard not to look at that without wondering if we would've gone to overtime.
Even though MSUM's rink has shrunk, this was the first game of the season on an NHL-sized rink and it definitely looked like we were struggling with spacing on the smaller sheet.
Now that we have this game behind us, let's make adjustments and earn the split.

Split on the road and sweep at home. Go Gophers!
Too early to say goaltending a big issue?
Yes. Is Close Ken Dryden? No. But we can be successful with Close as long as the players in front of him play sound hockey. Remember, it is still October.

I've said since Lindenwood that our goaltending is average. Our defense is super skilled, but lacks some grit. How many times against Mankato, North Dakota, and tonight have we seen them standing (screening) our goalie uncontested? Still have Tampa expectations for this team, but tonight they only looked good in spurts.
Goaltending was mediocre tonight but there were too many open players and shots in the high slot.
6 goals against looks bad on the defense, but the forwards playing lackluster defense contributed to the mess tonight.
Haven’t seen the game yet… Just the score.
But yikes… gave up 6?!?

They controlled play in the first, but no good scoring chances, OSU just kept chipping away, got 2 quick ones and then it was over. MN playing comeback hockey. The score was not indicative of the final 2 periods. For reference, I only had audio, so anyone who SAW the game might feel differently.

well at least cooleys stickhandling behind the net looked good
Wasn’t able to watch tonight. How much of it was Close and how much of it was the team? Gotta get Cooley going here I know it’s only a matter of time.

I’d say the first period was pretty even, then they controlled play until garbage time late when we scored twice to make it look closer than it was. The effort/energy tonight was severely lacking all game. We weren’t hard on pucks, our forecheck was soft, we played very loose defensively, and goaltending wasn’t superb. Just an ugly game all around really.
special teams worries me, as does goaltending. If our PK or PP are average, it’s not a huge deal if the other is solid. Right now our PP is average and our PK is awful. That needs to get fixed in short order. Maybe they need to try different personal on the PK?
I don’t think goaltending is awful, but it isn’t good enough to bail them out when they have poor defensive efforts like tonight. For as much skill and experience as they have on the back-end, efforts defensively shouldn’t happen like they did tonight. It was ugly at times IMO. We got outworked and out muscled for much of the game in our zone and in front of our net.
It’s early, but this was definitely a trash can night.

As for the PK, Frank and Wally:
So, how is our PK?
It's....not good.
OSU scored 4 seconds later.

Close let in 2 bad goals in a 6-4 game so not great but I felt we were kinda lucky to get four because Dobes wasn’t great either. They outplayed us and won so not solely gonna blame the guy in net.
Also idk who coaches the special teams, I assume Motzko but something is off there on both sides and it was an issue last year as well.
Watching Jess's postgame with Bob I think a garbage can may have been thrown because Bob would barely comment to anything positive that happened during the game...because, you know, nothing positive happened during the game.
Interesting tidbit about one of the officials for the game last night. One of the referee's was Andrew Bruggeman who is a Mankato native. I believe he is normally a minor league referee in the ECHL and AHL working his way up to the NHL. He got his start about 10 years ago working high school and men's league games right after he graduated high school. My boss was telling me that the joke at the Mavs game tonight was that Bruggeman called the game tilted towards Ohio State. I told him that Minnesota tilted the game to the Buckeyes so Bruggeman didn't even factor in.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
Emotional let down playing in a dead arena compared to last weekend, so I’m not all that surprised. They’ll bounce back tonight. It’s a long season & these are college age kids, ups & downs happen to the best of teams.
Apathetic atmosphere
A week ago the Gophers had battled long-time neighborhood rival North Dakota before two packed houses at home, in two toe-to-toe battles that went to overtime.
In sharp contrast, Friday's game was sparsely attended, with no band an not many fans inside the cavernous Value City Arena, and the Gophers clearly had trouble getting their legs and their emotions going early.
Sweep at home split on the road isn’t that the old saying? Win today then we get them last week of February. Wouldn’t wanna play us at Mariucci last week of February. Make no mistake Ohio State is good as well.
A couple of interesting stats from late night. Luke Mittelstadt was a +3, and led the time with 5 shots on goal. Knies, Cooley and Snuggerud had a combined 2 shots on goal. The Farm Kid, who is our best face-off guy, was 7-8 and Pino was 6-2.

I’m predicting a hard fought 4-2 win for the gophers with both teams playing a really solid game. Fourth goal is an empty netter. I like and believe I’m Close. Yesterday might have been the first game where I think he factored into the loss. He’s been solid since he stepped up last January and like I said in September, he probably won’t steal us a game but he will also rarely lose the game for us either. The team let themselves down yesterday and every player was poor. Time to turn it around today. Which they absolutely can. This is still the team that went toe-to-toe with both Mankato and North Dakota.
Every team has an ugly game or two. This team will be fine.

I really hope you’re right. I don’t have a good feeling about tonight.
I do chuckle at a number of comments on this site (and elsewhere) after a game like yesterday. So a bunch of 18-22 year olds didn’t perform on a Friday night in October.
Thank God they won’t be #1 anymore. Teams already have enough motivation to get up for the Gophers. Judging by Motzko’s comments on Wednesday, he saw this coming.
R-E-L-A-X everyone.

Clyde random his sprockets went to Columbus?
after a unpassionate defensive performance yesterday, do we see a shake up at the blue line? perhaps see Staudacher or big tuna Fish?

The only possible option would be Staudacher for Thomas. Thomas has struggled a bit the past couple of weekends. Fish, btw, has been skating with the forwards as a depth guy.

Sure would like to know what the store is, with Staudacher.

Me too. If he can’t crack the lineup after last nights performance I guess he never will.
Did Kurth get hurt last night?
He was on the ice for Mittelstadts goal late in the 3rd. He could be one of the guys Bob said was ill earlier in the week.

Looks like Steve has put together some Maverick and Pioneer defenses and unless the Gopher coaches have put together an answer for that combination, it could be another long afternoon / early evening . . .
Not knowing what to do, they do what they know . . .
Knowing what to do, they sometime don't do it . . .
The 26th year of the Gopher Men's Hockey Profile got to be too much for this ol' codger to handle . . . what with all of the possible activity on the transfer portal . . . . So, I'm closing it down at the 25th year . . .
Is the game on TV today? What channel on Directv!
