Every time I see that someone has commented in the Gophers Off Season Thread I’m hoping it’s an announcement that the Gophers have added at least one more depth guy at forward. But I’m afraid this might be it.
I have it on pretty good authority that Sammy is not coming back.
At this point any player who can hold his own at D1 hockey will do. I’m just worried about what happens if let’s say Cooley, Snuggerud and Chesley are at the World Juniors this year and then another player gets injured. We’ll be ready strapped, especially if it’s a forward.
The Gophers lose players to the WJC every year and it has rarely impacted the end of season result.
2017-18 Lindgren and Mittelstadt couldn’t make it back for the Friday game and we missed the tourney by 0.00001 percentage points ?♂️ lol
So...then...rarely? Funny how that works...

Now you're going to get our Bulldog fan all excited. Don't let him get too close to your leg.
I would much rather have the team play a medium tough team at the end of the world juniors week than not play at all. I think having an open week later in the year is more beneficial.

How does everyone feel about the ticket price for North Dakota?
I am pleased with it. We will see what the fees are tomorrow for the season ticket holders.
I am going to call the ticket office this morning to get more info, but the email that was sent out makes it sound like you can buy more than 4 additional if they are separate transactions.
I think the key words in the email is STARTING AT $40. My guess is the ends will be that price and as you move closer to center ice they will go up. I’m fine with that and am encouraged that the U is trying to get out in front of this and trying to get the arena full of as many Gopher Fans as possible. If the online seat map of the available season tickets is any indication, it appears that most sections have low tickets availability. I just don’t want to endure the Whioux fans that invaded Mariucci on Thanksgiving a few years ago, when it seemed that the crowd was 50-50, and the Gophers got blown out of the building much to the delight of the Whioux fans.
I’m doing my bit! I’m trying to get a group of friends to go on Saturday night. Hopefully around 10-12 of us. Some Bulldogs and Huskies in the mix but they’ve agreed to put aside our differences for one night and cheer against our common enemy from the west.

I'm not expecting the University to lower ticket prices for their premium games. I usually attend instate Gophers road games (Duluth, St Cloud. Mankato) and I don't believe I've ever paid more than $45 for their best seats. The Gophers charge $45 for their worst seats for premium home games.
I remember the good old days all ticket prices were the same no matter who they were playing
Aloha!
Yeah, 45 bucks just to get into the rink is not what we should be hoping for. If a family of four wants to get their kids into the game, that's about 200 bucks before you even leave home. Add incidentals and you're going to blow 250 bucks for a college hockey game - and that's for the worst seats.
The U will probably sell out these two games, so they have no incentive to lower the price. However, they risk leaving a bad taste in the mouths of fans who may not come back.
The Gophers showed signs of improvement last season for attendance and $45 is a heck of a lot better than the last time they hosted UND. I don't think one series is that critical to the overall trend.
Here we go again...
Next-- We should join the NCHC B-)

I went to the game in St Cloud last year and we paid $35 dollars for their cheapest tickets. That’s only $10 less than the cheapest tickets against North Dakota. To be fair, the most expensive tickets for the Gophers vs Huskies game in St. Cloud were around $45 or $50. But the Gophers don’t have trouble selling their most expensive tickets in zones 1 and 2. We’ve learned that when those seats are empty it’s more often because of “no shows”. I don’t think “no shows” will be a problem against North Dakota. My point being is that the ticket prices in zones 3 and 4 are only ten or twenty dollars more than the cheap tickets up in St Cloud. Considering that’s ticket prices for an event in the cities vs Cloud that’s not bad. Anything down here is going to a little more expensive. Games, concerts, etc. Families having to spend $200 plus isn’t ideal but that’s less than a Vikings or Wild game and yes, Minnesota vs North Dakota is right up there with any pro sporting event in the area. Also, as others have mentioned $45 is significantly less than three years ago when the cheapest tickets were $80. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Here we go again…
Next– We should join the NCHC
No no… we need to leave the BigTen so we can force the old WCHA teams to go back to the old conference setup.
Hence the move to the Big XII! :yahoo:

Koster changed from #6 to #4. Chesley with another high number.

Still only 14 forwards.
Still only 14 forwards.
And 10 of those 14 forwards are underclassmen. Including 7 freshman. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer. But that’s probably my only real concern for this year. It would be nice to have one or two vets up front. Even if they were just depth guys from the transfer portal.
Any of the defensemen possiblities to play forward, if short handed?

Cooley, Snuggerud, Lamb and Kurth are 4 of the 7. They are high end guys. Pinoniemi has potential. Strobel and Mittelstadt will be 4th liners or subs. No worries on them from me. Would not shock me if they work a defenseman in the forward rotation.

Plus when you take into account that some of the underclassmen, Pitlick and Huglen, are 22 year old sophomores…
If we’re really going with 14 forwards it really makes you grit your teeth when you think about injuries. Could get think real quick. Fingers crossed.
Four forward lines plus two extras "should" be enough to carry them through the season.
Knies and Cooley will play half the game! With only 2 games a weekend you could rely on 3 lines if necessary.

Just means things will get real interesting come world Juniors time. Those exhibition games could have some interesting lineups.

Who's ready for Golden Gophers hockey?
It's going to be an exciting season. We'll find out right away how good they will be in October with some tough games against MN State and NoDak. I have a feeling the Gophers will have the best 1st line and 4th line in college hockey this year. Not to mention the best defense. This could be a national championship type team. Most likely they will be ranked in the top 5 in the preseason poll this year.
I can't remember if it's I can hardly wait or I can't hardly wait. But I sure am excited! :M: :M2: :M:
Yeah that first month will be a real test for the team. Obviously I’d love to see them go 8-0. But realistically I want to see everyone stay healthy (of course that goes for all season) and I want to see the boys play with some swagger and not to get intimidated or back down from anyone. Embrace the hate and stick it to those purple cows and chicken hawks.
Lindenwood should be a massacre
Mankato and Nodak with be some of the most fun games at Mariucci all season!!
Went to look at the roster for this year on gopher sports.com, looks like they’ve redone the mobile site and it does not work well. You have to landscape your phone to see all the info, and then it won’t push the menu bar up out of the way so you can only see a portion of the screen.
Did we successfully redshirt Bartoskziewicz? Is he gonna be a freshman this year?
Did we successfully redshirt Bartoskziewicz? Is he gonna be a freshman this year?
The roster lists him as a sophomore.
To redshirt with the NCAA its not like you need to declare it for a non medical redshirt. Some school just don't say it and the player plans to be there for 4 years but they can always stay for that 5th year. Since he did not play he did technically redshirted and will be eligible for 4 more seasons.

I know Motzko doesn’t make the lines in the summer but that doesn’t need to stop us fans from making some fun predictions. What lines and defensive pairings do people think we’ll see in the first few weeks.
I will give a shot at reckless speculation.
I can see tBob dressing 7 defensemen, with Mittelstadt being a PP specialist. The PP will be interesting this year. L Mittelstadt was 5th in the USHL in PPG's and Lamb with 6th. The Gophers have a few people that could push for time on the 2nd PP unit, and I like Koster's shot from the point, so he could work himself into a PP role as well. It would also not shock me if Nevers started up higher in the lineup and as the year goes by that he will find himself on the 4th line. For defense, Staudacher is the wild card. I think tBob likes his size, but he did not play well down the stretch.
Knies -- Cooley -- Snuggerud
Pitlick -- Huglen -- Kurth
Brodzinski -- Nelson -- Lamb
Nevers -- Strobel -- Pinoniemi
Extras--Mittelstadt & Schmidt
Faber -- Johnson
LaCombe -- Chesley

Fish

Extra's -- Pitlick, Nevers, Koster, Faber

The defensive corps are just absurd.
I hope Bob is able to keep the team hungry.....the talent level is amazing and we need the compete level to exceed the talent.

When Brock was talking about his decision to come back to the U and said while it was a dream of his as a kid to play in the NHL, it was also a dream of his to play for the gophers and win a national championship, I got a little choked up. Also Pat’s smile was as big as the ice sheet at Mariucci. In this day and age, with players leaving early and it becoming more and more of a “business”, it’s easy for us to sometimes forget that a lot of these guys are still M guys and they grew up dreaming of winning a natty for Minnesota. Most players can talk the talk. It’s guys like Faber who also walk the walk. We’re in good hands this year. Let’s go already!
Glad everyone involved came to their senses and Brock ended up here instead of Notre Dame.

I have really high hopes for Pinoniemi and fully expect him to contribute his freshman year. This is a guy that has been marinating in the USHL for 3 whole seasons. People forget how big of a get he was (and still is) when Bob flipped him from St. Cloud because he's been sitting in our prospect pool for so long. The talent and skill on this guy is legit so if he makes his way up the lineup as the year goes I would not be surprised.
He is A FULL YEAR OLDER than team captain Brock Faber!!

It’d be huge if someone like him stepped in and started producing, especially in big games. I think to get over the hump they’re gonna need production from guys like him and a step forward from guys like Pitlick and Huglen (basically replacing the Walker/McLaughlin line from what I can tell), which I think is certainly possible.

Best of luck to Charlie. Did a real nice job in "righting the ship"-- everyone has an opinion on announcers, and after years of LaPanta hate and McLoed bashing, Charlie was good and solid.
Sorry to see him go.
So who is next?
