For Stillwater native @charlie_strobel, the decision to play college hockey at the U came down to one word: family. #PrideOnIce pic.twitter.com/gb6Ybk5R5o— Minnesota Men’s Hockey (@GopherHockey) July 18, 2022
I hope this kid has a nice college career. I remember being very impressed seeing him interviewed. Seems like a born leader.
Per Cooley’s Instagram he’ll be 92 for the Gophers. That theoretical line of Knies-Cooley-Snuggerud would wear 89-92-81. Definitely a new era look.
If they play like we think they will, they can wear any number they want. Knies could change his jersey number to 3.14 for all I care as long as he puts up 40+ points.

I think 40 is his floor quite honestly

Most goals in a season: Tim Harrer, 53
Most assists in a season: Aaron Broten, 59
Most points in a season: Aaron Broten, 106
Maybe Knies can set some records this season.

Whoooooaaaaahhhhh....hold your horses. He's still just a sophomore and had 33 points as a freshman. This is a very different era. I'll be impressed if he can get near Brian Bonin's numbers because those are in the upper stratosphere for current style of college hockey. Bonin won the Hobey with these numbers and he was a senior.

Haha you’re absolutely right! I will take those numbers in a heartbeat. I should have used one of winking or laughing emojis. It’s too hard to convey tone over text.
Let's just be happy if he gets 40 points...50 points is the high bar mark that has only been crossed twice in the last decade in this program so Knies would have his work cut out for him.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
I would love to have someone breakout and have a 50 point year. Realistically for me, I would prefer to have six 30 point players on this team. That would show that the team has depth. They had 4 players achieve that last year and the last season they had six 30 point players was 16-17. It would also be great if someone on the defense could score 6-7 goals, as the last few years it seems that they top out at 3. For that to happen, I'm guessing it would have to be someone on the point on the PP. But the most important thing is that the team is playing in April, no matter how they achieve it.

Did Dan Trebil have any kids?

That is a good one. I forgot that he scored double digits from the blue line. I think the last defenseman to get to 10 goals was Mike Vannelli. I think Mikey Reilly and Cade Fairchild got to 9 I believe. Goligoski had 11 one year. Then there was the year Leo and Ballard got over 10 each. I think Mittelstadt has the potential to do that from the point on the PP, but it won't be this year. Maybe in a couple of years.

The thing about Knies is he’ll most likely be playing with Cooley which alone makes him capable of 60+ numbers. Will be the best line in college hockey (most dynamic offensively). Although if he doesn’t get there I won’t be surprised either, it’s definitely a different era.
I think Knies, Cooley, Snuggerud all get over 30 points after that it’s a wild guess. Pitlick, Huglen, Kurth even Brodzinski/Nelson are capable.
From the backend LaCombe could have a historic season. I could see a 40+ point season in the works for #2.
Honestly just want to see the depth of this team develop, the first line will be fine obviously. They need guys like Brodzinski, Nevers, Nelson, etc. to find another gear, that’d go a long way to seeing this team get over the hump against the likes of Mankato.
Still need a portal forward, no? I’ve noticed Perbix hasn’t landed anywhere yet. Is it possible he finds his way back to dinkytown?
We should be hearing Ryan Johnson’s official decision soon, no?

He is going to Western Michigan
Cruikshank and Brinkman playing at other schools will be weird. Especially Brinkman having played 4 years here and going to another B1G school. But it seems we are pretty committed to keeping seniors moving on and recruits coming in so those two make sense. Perbix and Sorenson were disappointing to lose but I get it. The one that really confuses me is Broz transferring to Denver. I thought he was pretty solid down the stretch and really most of the second half. I think he has a bright future ahead of him and even with all of the talent coming in this year I believe he still could have been a key member of this team. So it’s a little baffling that he left.

It was reported back in May then the tweet was deleted as it was never confirmed. Don’t believe he has landed anywhere yet.

Broz is an odd one. Didn’t like the leadership? Maybe his agent saw the recruiting class coming in and wanted to make sure he got PP time? (DU lost/graduated a lot)
I would like to ask you people about the upcoming season. I realize we will have a pretty good defense but am not sure what to expect from our forwards. I see the hype of a couple of the new freshman and a couple of the returning forwards. What concerns me is the depth at the forward position. When I saw Broz leave for Denver I thought that would hurt our scoring ability. Yes, he did not produce much last season but he was a freshman with potential. If we are to make a deep run this upcoming year, what scoring ability do we have?
Thanks for commenting. I just need a better idea of how good our forwards can be.
Depth is an issue yes but our top 9 will be very very good. That paired with the best d core this program has seen in a long time makes us frozen four contenders.
For what it’s worth Elite Prospects has Jack Perbix listed as playing for the Gophers this year. His Instagram profile pic is Gophers but that doesn’t mean much. Zero Minnesota or Western Michigan stuff in his bio. Would be great to have him back. I think he’s a solid player who would add some depth.
College Hockey News has Perbix on our roster for this season too.
https://www.collegehockeynews.com/reports/roster/Minnesota/34
Then again, I looked at that roster closer and they also have Chaz Lucius and Johnny Sorenson on there.
Very interesting. I checked Sorenson and Broz on Elite Prospects and neither of them were even listed for the 2022-23 season. Obviously both of them have officially moved on but it was interesting to see that EP didn’t even have them listed while Perbix was still at Minnesota. Presumably because he hasn’t officially transferred anywhere yet. I didn’t check to see what they had listed for Chaz. I already mentioned on my post above that I’d like to have him back and he’d add some depth. Also, he’d add some senior leadership to a forward group who, while very talented, will be full of underclass men. Let’s hope he comes back, embraces his role as a fourth line grinder, and leads by example.
Perbix at Western... So ignore Elite Prospects

No new portal entrants https://t.co/XLJ5fnkNQi — Brad Elliott Schlossman (@SchlossmanGF) May 7, 2022
Not to doubt you if you know for sure, but it wouldn't be the first nor the last time that someone enters the portal, makes a commitment, and then for whatever reason backs out and returns to his old team.
With the portal how it is now until they actually show up on their new campus, they are still able to change their minds with no recourse.
What is your deal? This has been news for a while. Why are you convinced he will change his mind? Brad Schlossman is the most highly regarded writer in all of college hockey.

I am still hoping for Bobby Brink to change his mind.
Bobby Brink was going to, but the Gophers have too many good players already this year. :sieve: :yahoo:
Just watched the highlights from our B1G tournament semifinal game against Penn State. That last goal by Walker and the crowd’s reaction was so fun to watch back. If I remember correctly the team actually didn’t play that great for much of the game. In fact they miss a golden opportunity just seconds prior. Also, there were more people at both of the games against Wisconsin but the roar of the crowd on that third goal against PSU was top three all year. Anyway, I know I shouldn’t wish away the summer but I can’t wait for the season to start.
:goodpost:
I was at that game, it was really fun and loud. This year the Gophers need to figure out how to beat MN State, the same way they finally figured out how to beat Penn State who had until recently dominated MN. I haven't been as excited for a season in a long time.
Over or under 20 regular season wins? I say over!
:sweeping: the purple cows
:M: :M2: :M:
Should be a fun one for sure!! A lot more question marks than last year up front and in the crease, but the best d core in the nation coached by someone highly regarded to be one of the best d coaches college hockey has to offer should help steady the ship in the early months.
Knies and Cooley alone are worth price of admission!
After we kill Lindenwood first week I’m so amped to pull up to a hopefully close to sold out if not sold out Mariucci for the mavericks.
With early season anticipation and how the last two seasons have ended I’m hoping the U learns from the Michigan championship game and sells the crap out of tickets. Building should be buzzing for sure!
I kind of already mentioned this but with the talented yet youthful forward group I expect there to probably be a couple bumps in the road during the first half of the season. Whether that’s a loss that should have probably been a win or a game that’s an ugly win and we’re not on our A game, we’ll have to see. But I agree that our D corps with our new assistant coach should keep things steady while our freshman grow up and grow in to their talent. As far as the goalie situation if Close plays like he did last year I think we should be fine. Maybe he didn’t steal many games for us but there were definitely games he kept us in until the team sorted itself out (Saturday night against Wisconsin). I also don’t think he really lost us any games. He was pretty steady eddy. Just keep that going Closer.
I’m interested to see how much they bounce between Bartoskziewicz and Close or if they just stick with Close. Barto should probably get a game in the Lindenwood series
That wouldn’t be a bad idea! As far as the Kato series, I believe the football team has a bye week that weekend. So let’s hope the athletic department puts all of their effort into getting people in the rink for our home game vs the Mavericks.
Sounds like Knies and Cooley are playing on a line at the USA WJEC and just tearing it up. Will be something special to watch next year don’t take it for granted.
They have the opportunity, while very unlikely, to win two WJC gold medals and a national championship on the same line together in the span of nine months.
Knies can play this year, in August. Anyone that was eligible this past winter can play then.

Knies will be too old to play on the Junior team this winter
You’re right. My bad, I didn’t realize he was already turning 20 this fall.
This could go in a couple of places, but I will put it here. Broz talks about his exit from the U in this article.
Early in his freshman year, tension brewed between Motzko’s ballyhooed recruiting class and a few upperclassmen and the team was slow to come together.
“There’s not a whole lot I can say,” he said. “I think it will be a better opportunity off the ice for me to develop as a person, being in a little better environment with really good teammates that are going to encourage me and support me. I think just growing up mentally will be the biggest benefit of going there.”
I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.
methinks someone has a bit of an ego and didn’t get what he thought he deserved here and is butt-hurt.
that’s just the impression I get from the whole situation.
I hope Denver falls on its golden plump face this season. ?
Yeah, I have to wonder who the upperclassmen were and what was going on. But at the same time this article doesn’t really help his case. I understand he was frustrated at being benched but he didn’t play great in the first half and he was on a team loaded with talent. It’s not like Motzko cut him out of the team completely. He simply sat a freshman who hadn’t been producing for the last two games of the first half, two big games at Michigan btw. But then after the new year he obviously gave Broz another chance because Broz was getting decent minutes and contributing down the stretch. We obviously don’t know the whole story and maybe some of the leadership on the team last year could have done more to bring the team together. But he sounds a little entitled in this article.

I think there's a lot going on in this article.
On the ice Broz struggled the entire first half of the year. He was turning over pucks, wasn't winning pucks, he was passing up shooting opportunities and he wanted to get a shot on the pp which didn't produce with him on it. I think the benching probably served its purpose as it lit a fire under him and he played more assertively during the second half of the year. He was a different player.
Playing at Minnesota is always going to be a challenging experience. Broz was a second round pick by the Penguins, they're invested in him as an asset and want to see him succeed. Burke is probably protecting him a bit, but also pushed him to grow up and deal with it. Motzko can't spend his season trying to develop players who aren't improving. The Gophers have to win and can't put themselves in a hole dealing with mistakes by freshman regardless of their draft status.
Off the ice... lots of rumors, but I don't think it was necessarily a great room. I mean when LaFontaine cuts loose from them midseason, that's just one piece. You can put together more pieces with Broz/Lucius/Cruikshank/Perbix/Sorenson all leaving. Doesn't take a genius to know establishing good leadership is going to be essential for this program going forward. I think hiring Steve Miller should help that process as he's known for team building.
The weirdest shot was Burke suggesting that DU plays a more offensive style of hockey that the Gophers and that'll fit Broz better. I think Broz will put up better numbers, but it won't be because of a different style.
On a brighter note, her is Matthew Knies talking about staying at the U.
