If it takes coaching your nephew to be fully invested in the program, you're not the right guy for the program. Also it's not like he's bringing his nephew who's a stud and wouldn't be here without him. These are all non factors. Hire him because he's the right guy for the job, not because of these ridiculous connections that tv guys like to talk about to fill time.
Bob won the golden goldy as coach of the year

Just two years ago folks on this board were wondering what the hell Gordon and Raboin are doing on this staff.

If Martin had a significant hand in LaCombe’s development in second half of the year they should make him head coach …

If you were going to hire him it's because he got guys like Luke Levandowski, Charlie Stramel, William Whitelaw, Cole Caufield, Dylan Holloway and K'Andrew Miller to sign their NLI.
He also did very well coaching up the UW PP at times... but of course helps to have the talent to run them.
Hard to tell what Motzko will do with this spot as Paul Martin is certainly an interesting name, but being a college assistant coach is absolutely a huge commitment. There is tons of competition, talent evaluation is critical and Minnesota's 'fan base' isn't afraid to be vocal when it's not going right. Martin had a lot of positive influence on this group of defensemen, but Minnesota should be able to pick a great fit for this role and not just a comfortable one. If Bob thinks it accomplishes both, then it's his move.
Knies and LaCombe are serious Hobey candidates for next year. Faber will be the best defenseman in the nation but won’t be considered cause he doesn’t score points.
Neither Knies nor LaCombe will be the best Hobey candidate on this team

Whoever comes in will always have that same amount of talent to work with here. And the bar is fairly low to improve the PP over what it's been the past few years.
Someone with a strong history with the PP should be given points for that, for sure.

Oh the crow-eating this season has been epic.
I often tell my wife that without drama she wouldn’t survive. It’s similar for some on here. Just enjoy the damn ride because when you can’t control something, it’s much more disappointing when it doesn’t go your way.

Faber could definitely end up being deserving, but they just don't award it to low-scoring defenseman anymore. Even less likely than a goalie. Look at what McKay had to do to get it. Cheat!
😉
Let the off-season debates commence! Assuming Cooley will come in and be better than Knies is quite a leap. Knies should be the most dominant player in NCAA hockey next year and is my preseason Hobey candidate, assuming he backs it up with numbers. I love Cooleys game but freshman don’t typically walk in and drop Hobey level numbers. Beniers and Caufield are two recent examples of players who exploded their second years.
Beniers, Caufield, and Knies all happened to be exactly point per game in their freshman years.
Knies will be dominant but probably not as flashy as guys like Hughes. I'll take a national championship over ten Hobey winners in a row and the good thing is I think the players feel the same about the team goals over individual ones.

Faber and Cooley
I'd probably go Knies and Cooley will make it as teammates. Unless our PP absolutely pops next year, I don't see a defenseman making it as they won't have the offensive stats (may be possible Mittlestadt eats into LaCombe's PP point numbers as well if he runs the PP as many are suggesting).
My vote is for Steve Miller. There's a reason he is a coach on the USA WJHC team every December.
Nobody was going to beat Gable Steveson for the Male Athlete of the Year, but I certainly would like to think Ben Meyers was in the running for that award.
It's too bad so much stuff happened just days after the final podcast of the season. It'll make for an interesting first podcast of next season though.

Think they would do an official "He's back" tweet for Lucius given his first round status and how prevalent these tweets are getting across college hockey? Refreshing all the time waiting for Johnson decision.
Steve Miller would be my top choice to replace Raboin.
I’m not as plugged in as I used to be. Who is Steve Miller? I’m sure it’s not the Steve Miller that first pops into the mind of an old fart like me.

I was thinking same thing, came to conclusion that no news is probably good news…but I really have no clue
He has said that he looks forward to playing next season with his brother and Cooley. I'm not sure who invented this story that he is transferring.
That's not the point. The point is like Jup alluded to, schools are tweeting everything now as far as top players coming back.
When a player is potentially leaving that's true. Lucius said he was excited for next year before the season even ended. There is no announcement for the same reason there isn't an announcement about Pitlick, Huglen, Broz, etc. Also how do I mute you on this new board?
I heard there were WHL rumors prior to frozen four (which would be stupid for his development) He made his comment about coming back after that, so hopefully it’s behind us. The Chris Peters think was only recent speculation I’m aware of.
I’d guess his parents aren’t super easy to deal with…maybe it was just a power move to threaten WHL/Transfer.
His father is a pain in the ass, but he wants to see his kids play together here
It’s all just a whole lotta speculation from a whole lotta people that don’t know the situation

The University of Minnesota announces that Lars Sauve has turned down an offer from the Grim Reaper and will return for the 2022-23 season.
Of course, Lars is life and death and exists outside of each. But that's beyond their comprehension.

I agree w/ your take on Knies & his potential for next year. I'm also eager to see who the other winger will be (assuming he & Cooley are line-mates).
Re: Cooley & his potential impact - The only players I can think of who've put up "hobey-level" numbers as freshmen in the last 5-6 years, are Jack Eichel & Kyle Connor. Both had 71 points & made the final 3 in hobey voting their respective years. IMO, I don't think Cooley will replicate those exact numbers as a freshman but if he were to stay for two years, I could see him having a breakout second year like you pointed out w/a Beniers & Caufield.

They were considered legit NHL flight risks though. Are any NHL clubs clamoring for Lucius to turn pro?
My 2 cents. Bonin21 has expressed his disappointment with Lucius all year long. He also has been a ringleader in the speculation of Lucius not coming back or why he wasn't playing, and that speculation has had little to do with turning pro. Based on those prior comments, I took his comment as a dig at Lucius. As others have said, I really did not see Lucius as a flight risk to the Pro's, so no need to send out a tweet. Schools usually don't put out messages of players who are rumored to leave via portal or WHL. We will all just have to wait and see what happens and I hope he stays and has a very productive year. :M:

Any kid that is a 1st round pick is a legit flight risk. It doesn't matter if any of us think he is "ready". It's not going to put an NHL team in the poorhouse to sign a prospect before he may be ready for it.
That being said... Lucius has had enough of a injury history that it wouldn't seem wise to do anything other than continue to work hard at building up his frame and getting more physically mature in order to prepare for the physical rigors of the next level.

I completely agree with all of this.
I should have added because of his injury plagued year I didn't consider him a flight risk. Any player on the roster in any given year is technically a flight risk. Guertler (sp) and Birkholz come to mind as a couple who left that wasn't expected. Maybe the transfer portal is causing some undo nervousness among the fans these days as well.

For those who were around to remember, I thought Ben Clymer was another unexpected departure. IIRC he had a season ending injury in his 1st game of his sophomore season. The next year he left the U to go play in the WHL (Seattle).

I had completely forgotten about that, but checking on the HockeyDB website, it looks like that is correct. I wonder what the situation was? Looks like he was drafted by Boston, but played his first NHL season in Tampa. I wonder if Tampa had something to do with him moving to the WHL?
IIRC, there was a loophole in the CBA that allowed him to become a free agent after playing a full year in the WHL.

What are the chances that Logan Cooley's older brother Eric joins the team in some capacity?

Hasn’t he already played five years? And in any event, given our logjam at forward I can’t see them bringing in a transfer unless it’s a very high end guy.
What are the chances that Logan Cooley’s older brother Eric joins the team in some capacity?
Zero. He’s a fourth liner at OSU meaning he wouldn’t see the light of day here.
Did Johnson make a decision and I missed it? I’m assuming Buffalo wouldn’t want him to play in the last few regular season games so this year isn’t a factor and he’s just deciding where he want to play next year?
