I didn't know people were upset with Laffer. He did us a favor.I read it as him commenting when he will be back on campus, it may not be as early as some others are back on campus. I think it is wishful thinking on the writer's part to stretch it to he is considering not coming back and signing. If he did sign and bolt to the NHL he would easily usurp the position of most hated early signee of a gopher hockey player.
Biggest loss sure but no way he surpasses Laffer or Okposo. In fact I wouldn't hold any ire toward him whatsoever if he at least announced it in the summer.

It's possible I've misremembered the reaction, but I could swear quite a few were annoyed and no one knew at the time it would become a blessing in disguise. I could be conflating the reaction to Moe.
That’s how I remember it too. I was a bit more optimistic that the replacement goalie could achieve average goaltending without the guy who was providing less than that at the time. Fortunately it turned out even better than that.
As for Cooley idk what people are speculating about now, the guy seems pretty adamant that staying two years is the right choice and listed a ton of other successful NHLers that all did the same thing.
Cooley opens up the idea that he might not return to MN and might still sign with Arizona this summer.
I think this is a generous interpretation.
It's no secret Logan does not like school, but the rest of his quotes in this article are spoken from a stand point that makes it pretty clear he is pretty dead set on staying.
He'd be an idiot not to continue to weigh options in case something comes up. But we're getting pretty deep into the summer and we're not very far away from things ramping up big time for the upcoming season. A decision to jump up would have to come real soon.
First, anything is possible. Things change. That said, lets talk this out..
1. He made a huge announcement that he was coming back with Snuggy via Dinkytown athletes.
2. He has done nothing but be a team player since he was walked on campus. He appears to really love his teammates and the program.
3. He has said things to the media in Arizona in the past that appear to appease the Arizona fan base. He seems to be someone who doesn't want to alienate them.
4. Cooley knows he has things to work on, and he saw what the 2nd year did to his buddy Knies.
5. Bob seems to be very confident that Cooley would be back.

Not worried at all with Cooley. But he didn’t have to toss that media byte at the end??
My two cents:
Cooley has gotten some teaching on how to handle the media. He doesn’t want to savage Arizona and the dumpster fire they are, so he tiptoes around it and provides these quotes.

this. Seemed more like a guy who wants to sell AZ that he’s in on the team and the city with the plan to come back to the U, play for a WJ, and then hopefully a Natty. Seems like he and Snuggy are real tight. Don’t know why he’s bail on him now

I think his answer about players who returned like Toews/Oshie/Boeser etc makes it seem like he knows what he’s doing next fall. He knows that maturing a year helped them transition quickly into the NHL and he’s not built like Wheeler so some maturing will do him good when he gets there.

@slap-shot - You are right - but understating the reaction to Laffer leaving. I was angry, disappointed, and worried about the rest of the season. I thought he had wronged the Gophers by staying an extra season, forcing Moe to transfer, and then leaving us high-and-dry mid-season. That was the general sentiment around this forum. Few expected Close to even be a decent replacement much less a major upgrade and key piece of the team moving forward.
If Cooley did change his mind and join Arizona -- which doesn't really sound like it is a possiblity -- I'd be disappointed but not angry in the same way. I don't think there should be any hard feelings or hatred directed towards him. We got one great season from Cooley. That was all I originally expected. This second season is a bonus. The team hasn't made any roster changes or turned away other skaters in reliance on Cooley staying. In my mind, it would not be at all similar to the Laffer departure.
From the rink live
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — If all goes according to Plan A, Logan Cooley will play his final game in a Minnesota Gophers jersey on a Saturday night in April 2024 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, and will help the program win its sixth NCAA men’s hockey title.
Aloha!
Don't make mountains out of molehills is all I'm saying.
B1G playoff tickets are available for Gopher STH starting today. The price in my section ( 15 ) is $70 per ticket package for $140 total for 2 people and a $10 handling fee. As of now it appears they are not going to move us out of Section 15 to expand the student section for the playoffs.
@cowgirl Make sure you print a copy of your receipt so we don't have to have a discussion in March on how much you paid for them. ?

Great, now we have to worry about Cooley signing with the Diamondbacks. ?

Well... the MLB draft does start Sunday... ?
Kurth and Grimm talk for about 40 minutes. Really enjoyed it. Seems like a very level headed kid
Thanks for the update - some of us without twitter can’t look at that stuff anymore. ?
This is something to kill a few minutes during the dog days of summer.

So pretty safe to say that Schmidt will be back with all the lack of activity from the forward roster?
Colin is a REALLY smart guy and my guess he already has a decent job in the real world. I know Bob lured Rossini back from a desk job, but not sure if Schmidt would be willing to do that. Nothing against Colin, but I would prefer Bob sign a work in progress guy to fill out that spot.

It appears he is a business analyst at a company called McKinsey & Company
Hm. I wonder what Bob has up his sleeves.
@chill-kessel McKinsey is top of the food chain for consulting companies. If Colin comes back, he'd really have to love playing college hockey. Or, maybe the prospect of a Carlson MBA (assuming he only has undergrad degree).
With zero knowledge of the situation, I would be stunned if Schmidt is back
I doubt Schmidt is back as they would have said something by now.
Concerned about the forward depth. A lot of talent but you are 2-3 injuries/illnesses/early NHL departure away from a super thin group. In a year when the BIG top to bottom is loaded with talent and you’ll lose guys for the World Juniors for a month.
It’s going to be hard to convince a high end forward to join the team when we already have 10 IMO great/rock solid forwards. We just need some more bodies for depth.
Let's think about the great fourth line guys the team has had over the last decade, lets get that type of guy. They don't need high end, just a guy who plays his ass off and knows his role on that line and on the team. Someone who is ready to step in when needed or is locked into the fourth line. Guys like Ramsey or Romanko, give me someone like those two.

Cullen Munson in 2020-21 was my dream 4th liner. Played with so much energy that year and was noticeable every game. John Mittelstadt played that role well last year.

Seeing as one of Kurth/Lamb is going to have to play on the 4th line on any given night I’m not concerned about the depth so much as literal number of bodies (maybe that’s what you meant). Can’t imagine they go into the season with 13 forwards. Even 14 seemed risky last year.

Now you're going to trigger a few haters. ?
Jack Glover was a better 4th line winger than he was a defenseman.
Give me one Jon Waibel
I'll have to take your word for it, he was before my time as a fan. I've heard of him, nothing but good things, but I've never seen his work.

22 played good, they both played well.
It's fun to see some hockey again.
I'm already very excited for the Gophers hockey season to start.
A rough and tumble ham and egger who plays with piss and vinegar is just what the doctor ordered for this team!

They hope to have at least a month to let the concrete cure before putting ice on it. So getting closer to hockey season.

Actually... I think the ice will have to wait a bit.
Once cured, it will allow them to get heavy equipment out on the surface so they can remove the old lights and install the new ones.
