We abide by most of those during the heat of the summer. We grill out about 5 days a week during the summer to avoid heating up the house from the use of the oven. Our water heater was purchased at a large discounted price from the local electric co-op and they installed a usage meter on it, so they can shut it down during peak times. With only 2 of us in the house, we have never had an issue of no hot water.
Our REA controls our water heater and AC from their end. We have never even noticed it when they shut them down.
When we moved into our first house we didn’t know it was set up for the energy savings auto shut off AC. It was frustrating trying to get our baby to nap well when the AC was off and the house warmed up. We thought we needed a new AC unit.
Death Valley once hit 134 degrees in 1913. It could come close to that later this week there
The hottest temperature I have personally experienced was 115 at Luke AFB in Arizona while watching the Air Force Thunderbirds. This was almost 35 years ago so strong sunscreens were not available. That severe sunburn likely started me down the path of the numerous skin cancers I have had removed

Mrs. GE and I went to Death Valley earlier this year. It's much nicer in Feb/March.
Zwak, you will like this: From Dante's View (in the park about 5575 above sea level, another 300 feet above DV) Saltwater basin you can look down at Saltwater Basin, the lowest point in the US and then look across to the W-NW and. on a clear day, almost see Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the Lower 48.

I lived in Vegas from 1984 - 1986. I had to look up some weather records to confirm this but the average high in August 1985 was nearly 105 degrees. We had a few days that were easily in the 110s when I lived there

Of course it is! We had a concrete project cancelled today ‘cause it might rain.
The delay in this project is further delaying the replacement of our pool pump/filter (which sit on said concrete). ?
We desperately need some damn rain too.

Yeah, the corn leaves are curling up trying to take in less sun. We've had .2 of rain so far in June.

You're in SW MN, correct? I had read that part of the state is in (at least) a sever drought.

Yes, but not as far SW as Frozen Four

In the latest drought monitor, where I farm is in the Severe category now. That is 3 on the scale of 5. One of my farms is a hilly, sandy soil farm. That one is really getting ugly.

Cousin in Mankato had a frost late in the spring that damaged his corn and now a prolonged drought...can't catch a break.
I feel so sorry for all the farmers who've been impacted by the lack of rain. Praying for a long-lasting rainfall - soon - that will give your crops a chance to recover.
Story of the weather this year. Rain get to the MN-SD border and breaks up. Then goes over the Buffalo Ridge and reforms into a line of storms. No rain forecasted in the next 10 days.. :nutz:

Had a decent rain in Hopkins earlier this afternoon.
Edit: and the rain just picked up again...

We got 3/4 of a tenth. Not exactly the statewide soaker they predicted.

Same in Rosemount. Still not a good soaker that we need.

It was a soaker for about 15-20, then pure downpour, then soaker. Dry spell, then soaker again. Not enough, but it's a start.

All the softball tournaments in the state that were scheduled for this weekend changed their format to end yesterday/night in anticipation of the rain forecasted. Pretty sure they could have played today. I was glad ours finished last night though.
Good lord. Northern Mn could get close to a frost.

Crazy that there has been above 100 degree 3 times in Seattle and over the weekend, projected to be over 100 for three days.
"Historically, Seattle has only seen 100 degree temperatures in June once, on June 9, 1955, while touching triple-digits on three occasions in total. By Sunday or Monday, the region will see what the NWS labels “unprecedented record breaking heat,” with a chance that Seattle sees its hottest recorded day of all time for any month.
KIRO 7 meteorologist Nick Allard predicts agrees that Seattle will “break records each day this weekend,” predicting a record high of 101 degrees on Sunday, and then 102 degrees on Monday of next week (another record)."
I’ve been to Seattle a few times and have been chilly in August on sunny days. They definitely don’t get the temperature swings we do in the Midwest.

I imagine there were a bunch of news reporters filming themselves frying eggs on pans they left in the sun.
PRAISE GOD for the rain fall today. Hopefully the fields throughout the state our getting the same soaking rain as the southern metro.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Definitely thankful for what we got. Rain has stopped here with under a half inch. Hopefully more to come with chances of rain for the next couple of days. From what I have seen, one weather source continues to predict above average temps thru Sept and below average precipitation. But, it is the weather, so who really knows.

Trusting a weather person is foolish. If I and most anyone was as incorrect at our job as a weather person predicting the weather… we would all be fired a long time ago.

I'm more forgiving of the people trying to predict the weather. Predicting on how much rain/snow we get is really tricky, and that is why they usually throw a vast range for those numbers. I look at their accuracy of temperature predictions more than their rain forecasts, but temps are far more easier to forecast because of dew points etc. I actively look at 3-4 websites to monitor the weather and then try to make my decisions based on the combinations of those rather than the talking heads on tv.

I trust a couple of sites. And as for those talking heads, they are a pure ‘dog & pony show’.

Western of the Cities. I got about an hour of soaking rain in Mtka, then nothing. The sky looked like it wanted to rain, it just didn't.

It rained pretty hard on us in Burnsville for a couple hours. Tournament had about a 2.5 hour rain delay.
107 degrees at this moment in Portland. Forecast of 115 tomorrow.

I have 2 nephews that moved there from here. Always telling me how nice the weather is. Cooler in summer and warmer in winter than MN.
When I started farming in 1976 I also started recording our rainfall. I now have 45 years of rainfall records. I've summarized it all and have averages for each month and also yearly totals and averages for the growing season. Yeah, maybe a little nerdy.
This June I recorded .7", the driest June ever. My long term average for June is 4.5".

Interesting source.
Not the best time for fireworks. Super dry summer, 95 degree high temps and windy. Anoka county is currently flooded with grass and structure fires.
Murica!
ahhh... a quick 1.5" of rain from the storm that came through NYA this morning. My lawn REALLY appreciated that!

I had an irrigation system put in back in May and I’m not looking forward to getting this first water bill after it was turned on.
I love how healthy the lawn looks but I have noticed an increase in thistle bush and am now seeing some mushrooms that I've never seen before. I would assume the extend heat and regular watering is causing that. It wasn’t something I was expecting now that the lawn is healthier than it’s been in a long time.

The Weather Channel said 97% chance for us at 7AM. Not one drop.

It rained here for 45 minutes or so. Didn't rain overly hard though. Was hoping we'd get a long, soaking rain.

Same here. I was hauling corn to town, and thought I would only get a load in. Hauled in a few more, and then the future radar said it would be pouring at 2, so I quit since I don't have tarps on the wagons. They also said we were going to get 3/4 of an inch today. Now down to 2 tenths, and we will see.
