@kelly-red

Several years ago at the apt. complex we planted tulips. Mother's Day weekend, they came up missing. Someone decided to cut them all for their mother I guess. Just another reason why I don't miss the apt. complex and living in Mpls.

Many years ago the little boy next door picked some of the my tulips for his mom.  He was like 5.  She marched him over to apologize and he was very scared I’d be mad.  I didn’t want to buck her parenting lesson but I actually thought he was sort of sweet.  But it’s entirely different when it’s just random strangers.  Did you read the recent article about the DC cherry blossoms?  People are climbing the trees for photos. Shaking the branches to make the petals fall for TikTok.  But worse, they’re breaking off whole branches for taking home! JFC what is wrong with people?

I did not see that (Grrrrr) but did see recently they need to cut down many Cherry trees in order to do repairs along the edges of Tidal Basin.  Sad but necessary and believe the project starts in June.

This evening's weather update from GPLs meteorologist.
I think we’ll see less snow than they said for overnight tonight. I think maybe 4 for the cities, maybe. The band is setting up to our north and not over the cities like previous model runs. Also, the track of Sunday/Monday storm has settled and, as I thought, it’s set up too far west/north to be a snow maker for the cities. I think we’ll maybe see 6-8 inches Sunday afternoon and evening ( and that’s only if that initial band sets up over the cities and not too far north on Sunday). Then by Monday morning it’ll be a mix changing over to rain. And by Monday afternoon we’re dry slotted and it will just be windy Tuesday morning as the storm moves on.

Marshall, Granite Falls, Willmar….. very different story, all snow and a bunch of it.

When asked about Mankato:  Actually about the same as the cities. It’s all about that first push/band of snow Sunday afternoon and evening. Then everyone is to warm and dry slotted

Sounds like 8" on Sunday and up to 5" on Monday, with the rate of snowfall being heavy after 4-5pm Sunday (almost an inch per hour). Already snowing here in the Hopkins area, it's coming down at a decent pace.

Luckily I did not unhook the snowblower from the tractor. I did dig out the 4 wheeler and side by side a few weeks ago and moved the tractor deeper in the shed. Today, I re arranged them again. This snow will not be ideal for the snow blower though.

I'm still hooked up and in the front of the shed. DTN now shows 21" here altogether.

I lucked out with a neighbor out of town until mid next week so I can burn down my full tank of gas from the Fall fill up.  It was that or walking up and down the road when the 23-24 season snow finally hit.

I missed out on the Friday 4” of snow blowing fun as by the time I got out at noon, it was mostly water and snow blower not real good at water blowing. Unfortunately, still needed removed to not turn into ice sheet during overnight.  A shoveling I did go.

With the snow per hour that may hit tomorrow, my new cab cover will be fun to be inside of.  A November birthday gift from my favorite wifey that will finally get to be used.  Bring on the snow.

Any further updates from the resident weather expert on tomorrow? I have some family and friends doing some travelling and an informed opinion would mean a great deal. Thanks much, it's greatly appreciated.

For the metro:
a couple inches by 3pm or so, then it really kicks in, almost an inch an hour for the rest of the day. Rain on Monday, almost no chance of actual snow.

Her latest estimates

I’m sticking with my 6-8 inches, which will fall tomorrow afternoon into evening. Then precip will change to rain overnight and into Monday morning so any snow will compact and melt.

I wouldn’t travel between 3pm tomorrow and 10am Monday, unless it can’t be avoided.

Her sister lives south of Mankato so she usually adds something for that area.

Mankato area see less snow amounts overall and it’ll start snowing sooner in the day and change to rain sooner as well.

Update, per Wunderground (Hopkins station):

Around 5" total, basically a big nothing burger. I'd be more concerned about the rain tomorrow; with the temps, it could be rather slick out.

Mankato ended up with maybe 2-3" and then the rain started overnight.  Best guess is that the snow will be gone by the end of the day with the rain expected today.

*Aaannnnndd the snow is essentially gone by 11:00 am.  The rain this morning had a couple good downpours that took out the little amount of snow we had.

Out here on the prairie, we had a potpourri of weather yesterday. Did not get the 21 they predicted. We got 6-8 of snow, and freezing rain, and rain on top of it. They say the temps will drop a bit today, and they say maybe 6 more of snow, but the issue is it could get down to single digits tonight and everything will then turn to ice.

That snow is soooooo heavy.  My snow blower couldn't handle it and it felt like I was shoveling lead.  I am glad I went out and woke my neighbors to clear it off before the rain starts.

My snowblower was able to handle this morning's, just barely.  Yesterday late afternoon it started to get clogged but I was able to get through it after clearing it a couple of times.  I'm glad it worked because shoveling that would not have been fun.

I have to imagine this is ideal weather for spring crops, gardens and lawns.  Quite a bit of precipitation in a slow release form.

I think we have had the most rain in a 3 day period in a long time, maybe 3 years. We got .91 on Friday and looks like we will have over an inch again today with more rain in the forecast in the next week. That should put a dent in the drought. Luckily I finished my corn planting on Thursday night.

Good to hear!

We were running some errands today and there was actual standing water in some ditches along 35W north of 36 to Hwy 8.  Not something I've seen in a long time.

There are plenty of videos of tornadoes from that storm that started in Nebraska.  Blair, Nebraska got hit pretty hard but not as hard as Minden, Iowa across the border from Blair.  Just Google Minden and you'll see some extraordinary damage that took out nearly 50% of that town.  Check out this incredible damage:

https://twitter.com/IowaChill/status/1784615546656379277

I'm glad that the storm split before it hit the area where my in-laws live west of Des Moines.  There were more tornadoes of smaller intensity south and east of Des Moines as this storm system passed through Iowa later on Friday.

Get ready, the wildfire smoke from British Columbia is on its way south.  It is awful just a couple hours north of the metro, you can practically taste it and it’s supposed to cover the whole state by this evening.  🌎🔥

Damnit. I was committed to keeping the house open because the temps are going back down after today. This may change that.

it was slightly cooler up north (mid to upper 70s) but after hearing it’s damn near 90 at home I think the air conditioner is coming out of hibernation when we get back. 😬

I'm 50% factual and 50% sarcastic. When you get to know me, you will know which is which.

From the NWS today:

"- Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms should occur from early Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. This activity will have a very good chance at producing heavy rainfall rates due to high precipitable water values and strong lifting mechanisms."

I don't think I've ever heard anyone speak in language like this before, and I love the arcane.

How about (From the storm prediction center's current Day 2 forecast. This is the kind of stuff I always check when watching for severe weather):

Very steep mid-level lapse rates will overspread the increasingly
moist warm sector, supporting aggressive diurnal destabilization
especially on the southern fringe of lingering convection/cloud
cover. Significantly strengthening mid-level winds and a diurnally
persistent strong low-level jet will support initial supercells
capable of large hail and a few tornadoes, including strong (EF2+)
tornado potential. But a mixed/transitional mode is expected
overall, as upscale growth occurs given the degree of forcing for
ascent, with likely evolution into a well-organized/fast-moving QLCS
capable of increasingly widespread/intense damaging winds and a
continued QLCS-related tornado risk. This scenario currently appears
to be most probable across southern/eastern Iowa into northwest
Illinois and nearby far northern Missouri. The severe risk will
persist into the Upper Great Lakes region and middle Mississippi
   Valley overnight.

For reference:

Mid-level lapse rates:  How fast the temperature drops with increasing altitude.  The steeper the gradient, the more unstable the air is, leading to increased likelyhood of severe weather.  (Edit:  Mid-level does refer to how fast the temp is dropping in a specific band of altitude)

QLCS:  Quasi-linear Convective System.  When you see one of the huge lines of thunderstorms all moving together, frequently stretching across multiple states.

B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

If the above was not composed by a bot, I would love to read their description of a recent dinner at The Lex. A friend of mine wrote a script decades ago to generate biz speak pronouncements from Upper Management to the employees. Maybe the script has been repurposed by the NWS. Grab a word from each bucket and slap together into a sentence.
