Hoping for a decent Thanksgiving weekend. The shed is nearly fully enclosed. Still need to put up the treated t-11 siding and wait tell spring to paint. As well as waiting on the ordered tin roof and door. Was going to put tar paper up, but with the wind, it would the shred it. So hoping for a decent Thanksgiving weekend and everything ordered comes in on time!!!

Came down to Mankato to get my hockey fix.  It was not a fun drive (ride).  Hope they’ve been out salting as we are about to head north.

The north wasn't slippery, but I also wasn't pushing it.

Residential streets are getting a little slick, but nothing a Minnesotan should be worried about.

Yeah, being over-cautious, better then looking like a jack-bag with a 4x4 and in the ditch or worse. 😉

There are some slick spots around here after we came home from the local bar. I hope the roads are good for those of us that make the trek up to Mariucci tomorrow.

The number of accidents Saturday night in Mankato was astronomical.  There were four of them happened within 10 minutes on Hwy 14, cars just spinning out and going into the ditch.  One of them was a truck with a horse trailer on the hill coming down from Upper North Mankato.  They had to cut up the trailer to get the horses out, I believe both horses are doing good after they got them out.

Currently 58 degrees out here on the prairie. That breaks the daily record. Would be nice if it hit 60. I would sit outside, but the furniture has been stored for the winter.

It's 51 here in Eagan... warm enough that I have a pork butt on the smoker today.  Probably the last time I'll be using it for a few months.

52 degrees and raining at 7am on Dec 24th. Sums up the weather we had this year. Meanwhile, there is a Blizzard an hour and a half away. I just hope we avoid the dreaded ice they say we may have down here tomorrow.

There is a couple in a beer group I'm in, coming up from TX, and they were worried about the weather, they said they heard it's basically frozen tundra this time of year. They really lucked out this time around.

We have worms on the driveway.  That means we have zero frost layer on Christmas.  How weird?  It’s one thing to have a warm spell, but to have been so warm there is no frost… first for me that I can remember.

It is a skating rink down here. Not anywhere close to last years ice storm, but the driveways, sidewalks and side streets are pure ice. The main roads are fine though. Hopefully the sun will come out in the next couple of days and will clean things up a bit.

Sanding the roads, maybe? Temps are supposed be close to or below freezing as the week goes on.

I wouldn't think sand, but maybe they're spraying the roads with saline to get the salt layer in place before anything falls?

I’ve noticed that there was salt juice (that’s what we call it) laid down on roads the last couple days. I assume that means we might get freezing rain cause it’s never gonna snow again….

I knew that when the Gophers schedule came out and they played 3 weekends in a row in January that there was no way that we would get through it without a major snow event.

We have a crew working in Worthington and they reported that there is 5-6" on the ground there right now.  Another crew is down in David City, Ne and they are reporting 8-10" with the winds picking up now.  I was supposed to hit both of those jobsites today but postponed that trip for later this week.

Last night was miserable walking to and from the arena. The wind was in our face going and the temp had dropped further by the time we left.
I saw 2 college kids, guy and gal.  BOTH were dressed to die 😳. He was only wearing sweat pants and a hoodie.  SHE had no socks!!  Neither one had gloves. It times like that I really turn into my mother, I wanted to scold both of them.

When people tell me I’ll regret not having kids, I say that’s okay I know a really good place to cry. It’s my vacation home.

I thought the temp had dropped too but the vehicle said 12 degrees before and after the game - the wind just got that much worse.
I often don’t bring my coat in because there is nowhere but the floor to store it, but I’m glad I brought it last night!

Yesterday morning I had done my normal morning routine of checking the bird feeders and filling them. I've been doing it in shorts and a t shirt every day so far this winter. Poor choice yesterday.

it's so cold the bird feeder the squirrels usually empty was still full last night when I checked (we have flying squirrels that enjoy eating pecans out of our hands so we usually drop a couple on the railing). I can't say I've ever seen that feeder full after an entire day.

It cold.

I need to figure out the overall cost difference between feeding squirrels and not feeding them.  I use Safflower seeds and the squirrels leave the feeders alone entirely, but those seeds are quite a bit more expensive than black oil.

I'll give you a reference point:

the deck feeder we fill gets a full scoop of the North States Feeder Filler (4 cups stated capacity) of 90-95% black oil seed (unshelled) and 5-10% peanuts per day.

A 50 lb bag goes for $25 at Menards. Usually we get that at 11% off so $22.25. They say that's 150ish cups.  22.25/150 = $.1483/cup

peanuts are $30 for 20 lb, again 11% off so $26.7. That's stated as 89 cups.$26.7/89= $0.3/cup

.9*.1483+.1*.3= .1634/cup* 4cup/day = $0.6536/day.  Roughly.

edit:  that's unrestricted access on the deck and we probably have about a dozen squirrels in the backyard. The pure sunflower feeder that the chickadees like stays full for about a week at 4 cups.

There's also a suet feeder that goes for a week at most at $1.20/cake.

worms I put out only when I fill the chickadee feeder and those are much more expensive. But the orioles like them in the summer when I can keep the starlings away. God I farking hate the starlings.

Not true, but most (all?) cities have ordinances against discharging firearms within city limits. This includes pellet rifles.

The best ways to put a hurting on a local squirrel population usually involve attracting the squirrel to your property somehow. Even if you are successful with it a few years later another group will move in.

The only surefire way to not have squirrels rooting around is to have no feeders and cut down all your trees.

maybe I should paint the house with hot pepper sauce. 😂 We have wood siding (70s house).  Pretty sure one is living in the attic right now.  Something feasts up there in the middle of the night.
plug a hole in the siding and they chew around it in minutes.

honestly, they're more fun to watch than the birds. I watched them build what we refer to as the "apartment complex" because so many live there. Took them about a week to tear down (literally tote the previous one down to the base tree) and rebuild. it was very cool watching them work as a team of three or four.

The birds I do care about - crows, orioles, chickadees, goldfinches, cardinals, juncos - have a different food supply (orioles, finches), prefer what the squirrels drop (cardinals, juncos), or don't come around anymore (crows). The chickadees and mouse of the other songbirds I didn't list are easy to please.

the squirrels also chase away the starlings so win win
