The Cash cover, NIN (orig artist) said himself that Cash's version was EXACTLY what he wanted it to be. That says volumes.
I have no clue as to my Top 10. Some ideas are (no order):
Sinners Like Me, Eric Church
Smoke And Wine, Hank III
Let There Be Rock, AC/DC
She's A Sensation, Ramones
Don't Believe The Hype, Public Enemy
I Left My Wallet In El Segundo, Tribe Called Quest
The Kiss, The Cure
Saint Of Me, Rolling Stones
Ripple, Grateful Dead
Off He Goes, Pearl Jam
Probably would switch a couple, that's off the top off my head.
Late edit: Gimme Shelter is one HELL of a song. Sympathy For The Devil (which is close in relation to Saint Of Me, IMO) is also outstanding. Those are my top 3 Stones songs.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Here is a video of the song I mentioned last week. Every time I hear it I think I like it more. Too many new songs don't mean anything, don't tell a story. This one does. Its a song that requires paying attention to the lyrics. Going to see these guys again in July, in Mankato.
Some recent listens:
Slow start but worth the wait:
Top 3 in that Current "Essential Songs" countdown:
3. Heroes by Bowie
2.Bohemian Rhapsody
and of course, I friggin' called it at work, #1 was Purple Rain.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Should be:
4. China Girl
3. Fat Bottomed Girls
2. 1999
1. Comfortably Numb
Here's the complete list. Have fun.

Well, my kids asked me tonight if I have ever heard the song “Zombie” as they are into the new version. I asked if they had heard the original, they hadn’t so I played it on YouTube for them. It then ended up with 3 hours of videos spanning 5 decades of music. At first they really resisted hearing “my music” until the realized that the music I like (Beatles, anything hard rock) is part of their everyday life. The Bee Movie, etc. They had no idea.
It was fun educating them, making them listen to stuff I listened to and appreciating each decade/generation of music.
My daughter got bored and went to bed. I had to force my son to bed, he wanted to hear it all.
Here's the complete list. Have fun.
#4 - Imagine
Now that's funny. :puke:

Three of the Top 20 are Prince songs? Obviously a local ranking.

" Purple Rain " is not only Prince's most overrated song, it's a boring piece of crap. :bored:

They missed a couple....
Plus a little local flavor:
The Pineapple Tree (progressive rock)
Blu-Ray Concert Live "Where We Stood"
Band new features perhaps the best rock drummer ever, Gavin Harrison
Gavin is great, no doubt, I wouldn't take it that far, but his work in Porcupine Tree alone is worthy of HOF standing.
One of my favorites:

That album rules. The companion EP "Nil Recurring" is also excellent...especially love how they repackage the "Sentimental" chorus in "Normal".
Does anyone know what time the Eagles go on tonight?

I would have answered you earlier but it takes about 18 hours for this thread to load.

Mainly due to one person but it's not his problem.

Take it up with Jup. The videos load automatically when a link is posted.
Or maybe be courteous to others on the board and don’t post a dozen YouTube clips in a single post over and over again.
I'm sorry you feel that way.
The site has been operating that way for over a year.

When did "country music" become such garbage? Stumbled by the CMA show every performer looks like he just came out of a frat party and they all sound identical.
Very awful.

About 7 or 8 years ago. I agree with your assessment.
Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, etc, none of them can hold a candle to the Possum, Merle, Willie, Waylon, the Man in Black, King George, or Alan Jackson.
Tact is the ability to step on a man's toes without messing up the shine on his shoes - Harry S Truman
1972....
Rory was about as good as a guitar player gets. Also, anything 1960s-1970s with Jeff Beck, marvelous!
Have always been a Mark Knopfler fan, and have most of his stuff. Good example here:
If you like the Beach Boys, and also enjoy classical music, you'll enjoy this:

Very influential and an unforgettable live performer.

Began in 1991, when Garth Brooks mega success created a sort of instant mass cloning. But it took a while to reach it's current horrible state.
Nirvana mega success created instant clones at the same time in rock (GRUNGE), but rock has kind of faded away. (Is it dead or will it rejuvenate)
Before 1991 imitation was always part of the music business, but that was at a whole new level.
Huge bummer what's happened to country music (but it's popular).
the Suburbs have a free outdoor show tonight at the Lake Harriet Bandshell, should be a great show :rim:
Aloha!
Has anyone been to a concert at the State Theater? Looking at tickets to Gordon Lightfoot next Tuesday and on Stubhub listed are Pit L & Pit R in front of the stage. It appears there are a row or two of seats in these "Pits" that are a bit raised from the section behind. So it doesn't look like a traditional pit where people are standing?
Can anyone confirm?
Leon Bridges is bringing it:

He's got some other good stuff, too.

William Bell. Co wrote "Born Under a Bad Sign" with Booker T. Jones. Covered by many bands and artists, The performance during this Tiny Desk Concert may be the best. Fabulous performance perfectly recorded.
Enjoy :good2:

A conversation about the best things about some of our “rival” border states naturally turned to music so I’m wondering what people’s favorite musicians/bands from Wisconsin and Iowa are. For me personally I like slipknot out of Des Moines and Garbage out of Madison. I can’t really think of any great music coming out of the Dakotas but I’m sure I’m missing quite a few, I’ll throw 311 a bone for Omaha Nebraska too. What do others think?
I can’t really think of any great music coming out of the Dakotas...
Not current but Jonny Lang hailed from North Dakota. He was all the rage at local drinking establishments when he first came on the scene.

He's far from my favorite rapper but wiz khalifa is from ND.
The Violent Femmes and Bon Iver are really about it. Steve Miller is from WI but I think started musically in CA?
Les Paul is a Sconny.

*Wisconsin for the win with Les Paul.
*Not a band but one of the most significant figures in the history of recorded music and electric guitar.
So I’ve really dug this song that’s been on the radio a lot lately. Now full disclosure I’m guilty often of not paying attention to lyrics of songs. I finally paid attention to the lyrics to “Ghost” by Badflower this weekend. OMG. I didn’t realize at all what the song was about. I still like the song but the lyrics are brutal. The comments on You Tube for the video are heartbreaking.
For those who haven’t heard it yet it’s about someone who has attempted suicide multiple times. Just haunting.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

I'll have to check it out. The one that's been really catching my ear is "The Mother" by Brandi Carlisle. Powerful song.

Local guy I went to Hs with at Prior Lake getting his shot with metal band Five Finger Death Punch.
We used to have a Podcasts thread, but I think it got purged.
Has anyone listened to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast? It's fantastic.
The episodes are anywhere from 3-5 hours long. And it's literally just him sitting in a room, talking for 4 hours straight. He does it in a way that's very captivating. He uses a really interesting mix of sources, eyewitness accounts, etc.
He quite often does entire series on a single topic. I've been listening to his "Blueprint for Armageddon" series, on WWI. It's 6 parts, each part being 3-5 hours. So roughly 24 hours in total. All on WWI. I'm about 18 hours into it. I play it on my commute home to work every day.
It's been so fascinating, because I've always kind of had a base level understanding of that conflict, but have never really did a deep dive like this to fully understand it.
It takes him several months to release a new episode. Which makes sense, I suppose. If you're going to sit there for 4 hours and talk about something, you better have extensively researched it, and planned out what you're going to say. He just released a new episode over the weekend, the 2nd part in his "Supernova in the East" series, on the Japanese/Pacific theater of WWII. Can't wait to dive into that one.
If you're a history buff, I'd highly recommend it.
