Yes. I have a recipe for a beef broth and red wine reduction with peppercorns that I bust out once a year. Love it.As a parting gift to my folks, for our last dinner in Minnesota I grilled some wagyu rib
eyes (perfectly seared, medium rare on the inside) with mushrooms and peppercorn sauce, and Patti made some roasted potatoes and broccoli. Paired with some pinot noir it was the perfect ending.
Peppercorn is so underrated.
Slap Shot, looks great!
My kids are claw machine addicts. It’s our fault cause we allow it. My youngest for being 7 is pretty good at it. I’ve seriously looked into buying a claw machine. Put it in the basement and when the kids leave their stuffed toys laying around and other toys. Put them in the claw machine and make them win it back.
Keep your stick on the ice...
My buddy and I once found a 25 cent claw machine where you got free plays if you won at a bar up north and we cleaned it out. Bartender chased us down the street because we left like 100 small stuffed animals on the bar and he wasn't having that.
Reminds me of a time down in Mankato for Gopher Hockey. Pregaming at one of the establishments and these guys were there playing the claw machine. I got talking to them and they are buddies throughout the state. They meet once or twice a year somewhere and they just play the claw machine until they empty it. When I came back after the game, the claw machine was practically empty, and they were still playing. They were just having fun and handing out their winnings to kids and families throughout the place.

I always gave the prize to some kid. I never played for the prize, I just played to win.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
We should have a GPL night during the season when the Gophers are on the road. Find a place that has a couple claw machines. Hangout, watch the game and clean a claw machine out... lol!!!

I have been to neither so I cannot give my $0.02.
Minnesotans have taken home James Beard Awards for chefs and restaurateurs at tonight’s ceremony. Karyn Tomlinson of Myriel won Best Chef: Midwest and Bûcheron was awarded Best New Restaurant.
Young Joni's to close. Rent dispute.

Yeah I’ve found an article that reports the building owner requested a jump of 16% to something in the upper 30s. Eff that noise.
The article I read said the owner wanted to up from $14/sq ft to $36, and Kim countered with $18.
There is no "good faith" on either side with that gap.

Old Chicago Uptown had like a 30 year lock in lease. When the lease expired, the lease went up significantly. OC pulled the plug and I can’t count the number of restaurants came and gone since. And I haven’t been to Uptown for years. So who know what’s in the building.
It’s just like rent. People hate and hated when you had to increase the rent. Though when property taxes go up, it has to come from somewhere. People would be surprised how little landlords actually make. That’s why a vast majority of landlords have multiple properties.
Keep your stick on the ice...
OC Plymouth was the victim of the landlord jacking the rent, OC said "no" and closed, and then the landlord basically gave his friend the "old" rent price to a friend who started the sushi business that took OCs place.

I've eaten at Young Joni's once and it was fantastic. I've since tried to get reservations 6-8 times and every time I was shut down. That restaurant is always packed (at dinner time).Yeah I’ve found an article that reports the building owner requested a jump of 16% to something in the upper 30s. Eff that noise.
It very well may be true in this case but I still don’t always believe it when I read it.
My most recent attempt was made a couple months in advance for a group of 12 and they could only accommodate groups of 10 or less. I was disappointed they couldn't slide tables together to allow 12.
If you can get in before it closes, I highly recommend the Korean short rib pizza.
I am hoping they have plans to open in a new location considering the volume of happy customers.

Korean short rib is awesome. Been there 5-6 times. With Kim’s other restaurants I can get it, but this has been her flagship and I’m not surprised to hear the landlord wants to jack rates with multiple other high end restaurants going in right nearby to drive up demand. Oro, Vinai, etc all are relatively new and made that a hot eating couple of blocks
The problem with rent and and leases, there’ll always someone dumb enough to pay it… even if it means crashing and burning.

Montreal Smoked Meat is heaven. I've had it 3 times. Every time it was made by my foodie former coworker who lives in Philly... note he is a former coworker, so my supply has been shut off.Why does Canada have all the good food items… from candy to chips to food at Costco… lol!!!
I even like Montreal seasoning on all my meats when I bbq… hamburgers, steak, chicken, pork…

In Wassau, staying overnight. Ok, don't want chain restaurant BS, and also want to find something close to the hotel. I don't know anything about the city except how to get to the Great Dane (now closed) and to a certain grocery store (New Glarus related). Found a place called Mykenos Mediterranean Grill, in a strip mall.
It's a fast-casual sort of place run by Palestinians. How do I know this? The other customer at the time asked what dialect of Arabic they were speaking. Apparently he was Russian, but spent some time in Egypt, and knew Arabic in general. Yeah, WTF.
Anyway, I had the Mykenos Burger, which was a burger TOPPED with lamb. Sold. Quite tasty and filling, and only about $8.

Bummer. Palmer's Bar to close.
I was recently informed by a GPLer that I'm related to Airey
That stinks. I can't tell you how many happy memories I have of going to Annie's through the years including taking the kids a few times while showing them around campus when they were in grade school.
I hate to say it, but you’re going to see more and more of this. Unless you’re a franchise type restaurant or a very well established restaurant. And what surprises me more is what restaurants stay open while having crap hole of a menu.
The one that I can’t believe stays open is Barely & Vine in Lakeville. I call it a sheeple restaurant. Where people just go because it’s the place to be. Been there and the food is not good. You can get better food at a hospital cafeteria. Though every time I drive past, the parking lot is full.
Keep your stick on the ice...
In Mankato it's the franchise restaurants I can't believe that aren't in more dire positions. The local restaurants have a pretty loyal following while I think a lot of them have overly big menu's people like having to sort through 15 different burgers. One restaurant did close this year, MC's Garage which is owned by the Muddy Cow people. I liked it a lot but over the last year busy dropped off dramatically and they closed with a sushi place coming into replace it. It will be the third restaurant to try that spot.
Restaurants have a super thin line for profit with food, drinks is where the money is at and if you can't get a drinking crowd a couple nights a week you will have tough times. The only reason Big Dog Sports Cafe exists is because of the drinking crowd because their food is crap.
I am still a big proponent of a restaurant having a smaller menu and done very well with great service. If you can give me that you will have my loyalty as a customer. I wish a couple places in Mankato could get the service thing figured out because they would be heads above the crowd if they could figure that out.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!

your bottom line is the way. It’s why a place like parlour does better than the similar burger shop with 19 options. You spend a ton with those extra random ingredients and make your core offering less good. See a lot of the “higher end” restaurants go this way
Ouch, that one stings... With CP and Annie's gone, my only connections to Dinkytown a la Gopher hockey from way back in the day are gone...
I have not been down to the U in a long time who moved in to the Station 19 bar and grill?
Aloha!

shit, was only there once but loved it, close to my daughters place and thought sweet, something different from Sally’s and Stub&Herbs. Kinda bummed about this.

My buddy is a huge fan of that place 😆
They’re very good at what they do.
So many things wrong with this…
I'll never understand why vegans want their plants to taste like meat.

I am not vegan, but when I go with a meat alternative (such as Quorn sausage) the reason it's preferred that it mimic meat as much as possible is because a protein hits in a way that a straight veggie does not and/or if you're a "converted" vegan you probably still enjoy the sensation of what it was like to eat meat.

You can like something but be opposed to it. This is basically a way to have the cake and eat it too.
I’m not a vegetarian or vegan, but I get it.
Edit: Also, it’s The Fair. It’s kind of supposed to be ridiculous. 😂

Just because someone may want or need to eat vegan, doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t like meat.
One potential reason is a person who would like to eat meat, but cannot due to a medical condition. For instance, folks with alpha-gal syndrome who develop an allergy to red meat. (It’s a disease you can get from a tick bite, I had a coworker who had it).
Same reason people with dairy allergy want their alternative ice cream to taste like ice cream. We become accustomed to the experience certain foods provide.
Just some food for thought. (Or rather some thought for food?) 😁

I will say I had a vegan ice cream in Hawaii that was made with coconut milk and it was delicious. I asked them to put it in my iced coffee in place of milk and it was the best coffee drink I’ve ever had. Both of my boys had bowls of the ice cream and they loved it.
I can’t find a coconut based ice cream in the Twin Cities to save my life.

Look for So Delicious. They have coconut and cashew (and other bases, probably) of ice creams. I think Target has them most often, but I’ve seen it in Cub and Lunds & Byerlys too. Might be in a different freezer section that the normal novelties/ice creams.
Edit: Keep in mind that it very well may not be as good as the likely fresher and locally sourced stuff you had in Hawaii.

This… I look at so many items and say why would any one think that’s good. And those same people probably think the same about what I like.

Is Sam’s Club the best deal in town when feeding kids. It’s less than $15 to feed 3 kids, my wife and me. Either pizza or hotdogs and with Icee’s if the kids don’t want pop.

It had gone downhill but I’ll still give it a try under new people. It’s a bummer the place down the street from me will remain empty, but both breweries they’ll have trucks at aren’t far!
If you ever find yourself in Marquette MI, be sure to hit up Iron Bay taproom. Whitefish tater tots. 🤤
Although everything we ate was delicious!
Ate "brunch" at Pub 819 in Hopkins, re-opened last week (closed since November due to fire). Pretty much the same look and menu, but a couple new items. Had the Kramarczuk's Keilbasa Mac And Cheese, and damn, that was good, and more than filling. What REALLY sealed the deal was they didn't sprinkle the toasted bread crumbs on top...they baked them into the dish, so every bite you got a lil' sump'n sump'n.
I've heard they did procure a smoker, but haven't utilized it yet, so looking forward to what they come up with.
