Superman (2025, aka [editor's note] The Emo Version: Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as reporter Clark Kent. As the embodiment of truth, justice and the human way he soon finds himself in a world that views these as old-fashioned.
Overall, I thought it was decent enough to say I didn't waste my time. However, HOWEVER, the highs were really high, and the lows were "WTF is this sh*?" Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor, was GREAT in The Menu) plays an excellent villain. I don't think Rachel Brosnahan (Rachel in House Of Cards) was salty enough; yes, I still think Margot Kidder was the best Lois Lane.
Kudos for putting in little cookies for the comic book fans (the extra "metahumans") although I really only understood two of them: John Cena's superhero guy, don't even remember the name, on a tv clip, and an off ramp for Gotham City.
All in all, the first Superman I somewhat enjoyed since the original two installments way back when.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues: The band reunite after a 15-year break for one final concert.
The magic is still there. Definitely captures the spirit of an old-ass band getting back together (or still touring). A couple of MAJOR cameos, and one, given the writing (or lack of it, as I am guessing much of the dialogue was ad-libbed), it quite excellent. I'll let the viewer figure out which cameo I'm talking about. 😉
If you're a fan of the first one, you will enjoy this one. If you haven't seen the first one, what is wrong with you? It's a textbook rock documentary, even though it's completely made up, and many, many rock bands of that era have said so.

Fatman: A rowdy, unorthodox Santa Claus is fighting to save his declining business. Meanwhile, Billy, a neglected and precocious 12 year old, hires a hit man to kill Santa after receiving a lump of coal in his stocking.
Rather dark take on the whole Santa story. Mel Gibson plays Santa and Walton Goggins plays the hitman. I will say, both did well in their roles. Really didn't quite know how it was going to end until it ended. Some questions remained about the main plot of the story, guessing it was just cut in editing for a tidy ending.
There were a couple humorous moments, but they also had a dark tinge to them. Personally, I only checked it out because of Goggins, since Gibson has been so hit and miss for so long. Can't say I was enthralled with the movie, but I also can't say I wasted time with it.

A Christmas Story Christmas: Follows the now-adult Ralphie as he returns to the house on Cleveland Street to give his kids a magical Christmas like the one he had as a child, reconnecting with childhood friends, and reconciling the passing of his Old Man.
Unlike the original, which I prob have seen a couple hundred times over my lifetime, I have only seen this once before. It played on TBS after the annual original marathon. Upon second viewing, man, they really did a good job on it, and I give it even more credit than the first time I saw it, since I could take the time to notice the little details. The multiple parallels, nods (and in a couple cases, duplicate shots*), etc, it is one of the better sequels out there.
Julie Hagerty was OUTSTANDING as Ralphie's mother (the carolers scene was pure gold). They brought back as much of the original cast as they could (the original mother, who was also the lesbian in Slap Shot) declined to reprise her role, as she was retired. To me, that was really cool, instead of getting some lookalikes who could pass for the OG characters.
*There is one shot in particular, with Ralphie and his mom looking out the window (and NOT the ending), with the Christmas tree lit, which is the final scene in the original. HUGE props for that.

Mean Girls: Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.
Yes, my curiosity (and the Oct 3rd memes) finally caught up to me, and I watched it. Obviously, hindsight, that is a helluva cast. Good coming of age story, although you can tell it was set in a certain time period. I'm glad I watched it, but I can't say it was an award winning movie. The overall message is the driving point, and I applaud that.

The Forgiven: A fatal accident disrupts the lives of Western visitors to a lavish party in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and will ultimately lead to a reckoning in the desert.
The opulence of the westerners vs the modest/poor of the Middle East dominates the theme of the movie, and it's no wonder they hate the west. There's a quote in there by one of the westerners, paraphrased, "If people stopped criticizing Americans, we'd be humbled, because we'd think we're NOT the center of the world."
Good movie overall, gives one a bit to think about.

Money Monster: Financial TV host Lee Gates and his producer Patty are put in an extreme situation when an irate investor takes them and their crew as hostage.
In this crazy world, yeah, could happen. Heavy drama, and a bit of social satire which I REALLY enjoyed (I laugh at ignorant people, sorry, I mean people who refuse to learn for themselves). Stupid people, okay, give them a chance, and they are in here, also.
Good movie, one has NO idea where this is going to end, they keep the story tight, a few hints, but nothing major. I'd put it high on my overall "should see."

Day off, movie marathon, went 1 for 3 on success: Eden: Based on a factual account of a group of outsiders who settle on a remote island only to discover their greatest threat isn't the brutal climate or deadly wildlife, but each other.
The intensity brews and brews, and it doesn't explode, but it bursts. Tension is THICK. Ana de Armas (the caretaker in Knives Out) is OUTSTANDING in her role. She really steals the show.
Babylon: A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.
I made it about an hour into this mess of a movie. I understood what they tried to do, but what they did was exactly what they made ridicule of, it was so over the top, it was similar to getting a sledgehammer to the head. Subtlety is key to this type of movie.
Border Hunters: After his police officer brother is killed by a drug dealer who flees to the protection of his cartel-connected uncle in Mexico, an American man with a diverse law enforcement/military background goes south of the border to get revenge
I was curious about this due to Dean Norris (Hank from "Breaking Bad" and a cop in basically everything else he's done). Total B Movie. I think the people on this site could write dialogue that is not as dry/corny/cliched. It was just bad. Didn't even finish it.

Babylon COULD have been fantastic! I’ve studied early Hollywood, it was like Caligulas court in it’s decadence. But instead of having any sort of real plot or storytelling, this film relies totally on shock. There’s a great book this film was sort of based on; Sin in Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood.

Only The Brave: Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect a town from a historic wildfire.
Those guys, and others who do that job, are nuts. I have a childhood friend that is the chief of the Spring Lake Park FD, and a few years ago volunteered to help the CA fires. He wasn't a "hot shot" as you will find that is the term they say in the business, but still.
Pretty intense movie, and from what I've looked at, damn 100% real, no showboating for Hollywood. Great starring cast, and there may be some cuttin' onions in the movie at some point. No, I will not tell you when. 😛

Relay: A broker of lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten them breaks his own rules when a new client seeks his protection to stay alive.
Very taut thriller until the end, when it gets really lazy and becomes a popcorn movie. It was quite interesting to see all the ways the broker operates to maintain security and safety, for both parties the broker represents. 100% cat-and-mouse game. It really could have finished with a bang, but it ended with a meh.

Ben Kingsley is masterful as usual (the reason this movie caught my eye). Man, that whole era was quite a sham, yes I am toeing the line of the rules of this board, but I am commenting on this movie only. I also kind of find it funny that all Arab interpreters, whether they are fluent in Farsi, Mesopotamian, Kurdish, etc, are all really attractive per Hollywood. 😛
Good watch, peels back the layers of the onion, per the cliche.

When this was in the theaters I was debating about going to see it as I liked the original and director Edgar Wright usually makes good movies. I am SO glad I waited to watch it for "free' on streaming.
Glen Powell plays supposedly angry man Ben Richards who is down on his luck and needs money to help pay for medical care for his daughter. He decides to enter The Running Man game show where humans become prey of hunters and these hunters are helped by citizens who get rewards for helping to track. Josh Brolin plays the evil game show producer.
Except for a 10 minute or so part with Michael Cera this movie is just no fun at all. I just couldn't buy Glen Powell as this angry man as his anger just seemed so fake. The main hunter is this masked man who's identity is kept secret. When he is finally unmasked I was expecting some sort of super cameo or a twist but got neither. No pay off at all.
Cannot recommend (except for the scenes with Michael Cera).
One Battle After Another: When their evil enemy resurfaces after 16 years, a group of ex-revolutionaries reunite to rescue the daughter of one of their own.
I'm sure the film students geeked out over the technicalities of this movie, probably some Orson Welles stuff or something. From a common man standpoint, the main message is rather clear, if not purely blunt. Frenetic in pacing, and oddly enough, the movie score piano bits in the scenes with Leo are beyond simple, but also frenetic. Really gets you into his path of thinking, his mindset.
A rather bizarre movie that starts really slow, gradually shows the pieces, then goes off the charts. 2:45 runtime or so, it's one you have to be in the mood for, then strap in. Very good movie, just a bit different than what I expected.

Caught Stealing: When his neighbor asks him to take care of his cat, a former baseball prodigy now working as a bartender finds himself in the middle of gangsters without knowing why. He must use all his cunning to survive and understand what is happening.
The supporting cast is outstanding. Don't look it up, but the Jewish gangsters are big time actors. Took me a couple appearances to recognize them, I admit.
Darren Aronofsky movie, which I didn't know going into it, so yeah, it's messed up. Reminded me a little of Guy Ritchie's "Snatch." A lot of players, and a lot of turns in the plot. Very entertaining, especially figuring out all the angles, of which the viewer is not privy to. You're basically watching from the main character's point of view. You have no idea what all the connections are, and most likely, you are just as confused as the main character.
A pleasant surprise of Netflix's algorithm of "You Might Like" vein.
Distorted: A couple moves to an isolated, modern, safe apartment building with CCTV after the wife has problems with nightmares. However, something's not quite right with the building.
Trash. Got through about half of it, tired of it, not even worth finishing. Looked up the wiki summary, and glad I didn't waste any more time with it. Half-ass plot with half-ass acting and half-ass twists, and I am being nice about it.

Cover-Up Seymour Hersh has been at the front lines of political journalism in the United States. Hersh's breakthrough reportage has brought to the public's attention many of the most damning constitutional wrongdoings and cover-ups.
Quite interesting documentary on the reporter. The doc covers a couple of key stories he delved into, as well as the man himself. It definitely highlights his assets as well as his flaws. Worth a watch.

Jay Kelly: Famous movie actor Jay Kelly embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting his past and present with his devoted manager Ron. Poignant and humor-filled, pitched at the intersection of regrets and glories.
Clooney stars in this, and he does a tremendous job, as usual, enough to make me wonder where the line is between fact and fiction. Overall, a rather depressing movie that still manages to give the viewer a ray of hope for Jay, throughout the movie. It also shows that Adam Sandler CAN be a good serious actor, and not make garbage movies like Jack And Jill (Uncut Gems was excellent, as another example).
Very much worth watching, a poignant movie, to be sure.
Secret Mall Apartment:
In 2003, eight Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment inside a busy mall and lived there for four years, filming everything along the way. Far more than a prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for all involved.
Documentary on the incident. It was about half on the actual creating the apartment, and half about the main guy with the idea, with some social issues scattered about. Kudos to them pulling it off, especially considering security, and they weren't exactly professionals at basically illegally setting something like this up.
I don't see how this could happen in this day and age with all the improved technology. Interesting story, though.

The Smashing Machine: The story of mixed-martial arts and UFC champion, Mark Kerr.
This is one of those almost-hits. The acting was crazy good, and there is a story there, but somehow just missed a true dramatic GREAT movie. I'm thinking the subject matter of MMA didn't catch the interest of a lot of people (I personally am not into the sport itself). Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is what me curious about this movie. Lore has it that when he was going to be the host of SNL, he was asked if he could act, and his response was "that's what I almost every night [in the WWE/F]" 😉
Emily Blunt also does great work, being the girlfriend in a very volatile relationship, which I am sure affected Kerr's career, besides the opiates. Their chemistry in real life (and on-screen) makes the Sam-And-Diane "Cheers" relationship look like a walk in the park.
Overall, I did like it, and hope that this opens up more serious roles for Johnson, instead of being the action hero of the day.

The Fanatic: A rabid film fan stalks his favorite action hero and destroys his life.
Directed by Fred Durst (yes, that one) and starring John Travolta. I still took a chance. The movie is rough, average at best. However, Travolta nails the main character (the stalker, not the star). I dare say one of his best performances, and I absolutely, unashamed, am obsessed with Pulp Fiction and all it entails.
Runs about 90 minutes, so a short watch. Check it out. I do actually think Durst has a bit of talent, just needs to shine it up a bit, hone the craft.

Train Dreams: Based on Denis Johnson's beloved novella, Train Dreams is the moving portrait of Robert Grainier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a life of unexpected depth and beauty in the rapidly-changing America of the early 20th Century.
Call it a "slice of life" movie, call it "oral folklore" or whatever. Slow, dialogue-driven, but interesting. It's like an old-timer telling a rookie about some guy who lived the life, and the story-teller knew him. Or maybe heard of him. A little artsy-fartsy at times, but never crosses that line of being an "art film of passion" and whatever terms those people use.
This is for a sure a movie you need to be in the mood for, but when you're in that mood, it's quite good.

Watched this today, and while the basic info is common knowledge to pretty much anyone on this board, the footage and interviews, hoo boy. I was unaware of how many cut onions were laying around my apartment. 😉

Copshop: On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station-but when the hitman turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.
B-Movie, but not the uber-cheesy kind. It wanted to be good, but had no expectations it would be good. Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, and Toby Huss (a great "Oh, it's THAT guy!") Everything about the plot and story is "who do you trust?". Worth a watch, though. You can tell it was shot during the pandemic, given the shots in the movie, and with those conditions, it did a good job with that.

Everybody's Fine: A widower who realized his only connection to his family was through his wife sets off on an impromptu road trip to reunite with each of his grown children.
Damn good cast led by De Niro. it's drama, but not overly sappy or melodramatic. It's a solid movie, some truths were laid out, and it was presented as a real story, not trying to tug the tears or cut the onions, and oh man there is some awkwardness on his travels. This is what life is, deal with it in whatever way you like. I think that was the beauty in it. Def recommend.

Danny Collins: An aging rock star decides to change his life when he discovers a 40-year-old letter written to him by John Lennon. (sorta based on a true story, a little bit; the base of the plot, the letter, is indeed true).
Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Plummer, and by special request by Pacino: Bobby Cannavale (IMO, he's in "Oh, It's THAT Guy" territory) are the meat of the cast, and that's not a bad lineup. It's a drama, with a little bit of rom-com in there, but just a little overall.
It really shows the ugly background of a rock-star lifestyle, and I'm not talking the drugs or booze, etc. It's the trail one leaves behind affecting people you have interacted with DUE to the decisions you made. The "real life," so to speak. The consequences of one's antics.
Looking at the $$$$, broke even on budget versus ticket/etc income, which meant it bombed, prob lost all marketing money (if there really was any), and that's a shame. It's a better movie than that.

A little late to this but I saw “Caught Stealing” recently and yes, I also highly recommend. If you’re looking for a fun, action packed movie that has some moments of levity mixed in then I think you’ll enjoy it. Great stand alone movie that will keep you entertained from start to finish.
Civil War: In a dystopian future, four journalists travel across the United States during a nation-wide conflict. While trying to survive, they aim to reach the White House to interview the president before he is overthrown.
A VERY pointed commentary on the *current* state of our nation, according to the writers/director (this is an editor's note), so I will state that I am only commenting on the movie and its presentation. There are too many references to certain locations, issues, etc to go unnoticed.
The main plot is simple: some states form different factions with different ideals, save one: the president must go. The secondary plot, the journalists' journey, to me, is the real meat of the story. Their story arcs have so much body it outshines the main plot. It's a LOT to take in, to be honest. It's as if you are in their heads within the first 1/4 of the movie. You become PART of that team.
Along with "Don't Look Up" and "Leave The World Behind," this seems like a coincidental trilogy of sorts.
Rather intense movie, reading some trivia about it, and they used full blanks in all scenes, which are as loud as full gunfire, as opposed to half- or quarter-blanks. That is quite insane. They wanted the actors to feel the full brunt of what it would be like.

Queen Of Chess: Hungarian chess prodigy Judit Polgár challenges champion Garry Kasparov and her controlling father over 15 years, breaking gender barriers to become the greatest female player ever and one of history's finest.
You're going to fight through some blatant sexism in this one, even after Judit basically proved herself, but still an amazing story. I suck at chess, although I used to play it a bit, and the way these players think (and it is demonstrated a few times in this documentary) is incredible.
At every Big Four Sportsball Game, you have that one guy, who's so over the top, it's almost embarrassing at the least... chess people are that, but in the mental sense. They would dismiss Big Bang Theory characters as simpletons.

RIP Robert Duvall. 95 years is heckuva run, but it is always too soon with some people.
Had to pop in "Secondhand Lions" due to this news. Michael Caine AND Robert Duvall? Oh, hell yes.
Fourteen-year-old Walter Caldwell's irresponsible mother Mae sends him to live with his bachelor uncles, Hub and Garth, so that she can go on yet another husband-hunting trip.
Hayley Joel Osmont plays the kid, and I truly envision a combo of Caine's/Duvall's personality when I get to be their age (with a little bit of Eastwood in "Gran Torino" tossed in, minus the racism part, of course). Absolutely great coming-of-age movie, cannot recommend enough.
Duvall, in his later years, always had the "cool grandpa" quality about him in his roles. A wink here, an inside joke there, etc.

You really don't know the motive, the end-game, whatever. It's messed up. It WAS shot during Covid, so the explains the scenes as presented, and in this kind of movie...that is a BIG asset. Ups the ante in suspense and WTF.

You really don't know the motive, the end-game, whatever. It's messed up. It WAS shot during Covid, so the explains the scenes as presented, and in this kind of movie...that is a BIG asset. Ups the ante in suspense and WTF.

This has similar vibes to the mini-series The Patient with Steve Carell. Carell played a therapist who is held prisoner in a basement by a man who reveals himself to be a serial killer. The serial killer demands that Carell's character cure him of his homicidal ways. Very chilling and well done.
The Iron Claw: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, who made history in the intensely competitive world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s.
Finally saw this. This era of wrestling just missed me, although I do vaguely remember The Texas Tornado, who was one of the Von Erichs. Was always familiar with the names just didn't really see them perform.
Good drama, and as any other movie "based on true events" or "inspired by a true story" they flub things for the Hollywood effect. However, the spirit is definitely there, and wrestling fan or not, it's a recommended watch. The wrestling sequences (and the behind the scenes stuff) is spot on, for sure, which does help.
For those that have seen "The Wrestler": that movie is pure fiction as far as actual facts, but the lifestyle/career in that movie has been said to be the most accurate.
This is the 1A/1B for that industry in comparison.
