Happy for him, sad for me.

Frank was one of the major voices of my childhood.

He and Wally would be announcing Gopher hockey games while my brothers and I would mimic the Gopher legends in our basement playing floor hockey, and we would stop to listen when he would make another great call.

His passion and professionalism was perfect as one of the main voices for Pride on Ice.

He is a great guy and fan and deserves to step away on his terms, and we can celebrate him appropriately. Glad for him, really happy for him, but for me I just feel really old now as a piece will be missing.

That game was so much fun and I was fortunate to sit next to @bladepuller for that game and his observations were spectacular; two I will never forget:

1) Look at the green rats abandoning the building!

2) Condon spooled up the turbos on that goal!

Some great calls in this one..

https://twitter.com/GopherHockey/status/1775890186930454800

The Vanek goal against Ferris State I saw live and I still can't believe it happened.  Players try that all the time it never works...and you can tell Frank and Doug were in shock that he somehow got it to go!

I was working at the X when Wheeler scored...that was a lot of fun and I have listened to that call a million times!

I sat by Frank in '03 in Buffalo...him booing a TV timeout made a bunch of us laugh.

More on Frank.

Former Gophers coach Don Lucia, now the commissioner of the CCHA, recalled the heyday of Mazzocco's time with Woog as color analyst.

"When you think of Gopher hockey, you think of Frank and Doug, when Doug was doing the color. They were like Frick and Frack together," Lucia said. "Sometimes, they'd get a little off-tangent and it would be comedy hour, and Frank would have to guide Doug back to the game."

It did start at 8. It was the longest day waiting for the game. Then when it was over it was after 11 and I couldn’t sleep. Would have much preferred the 6pm game or even earlier.

When I was a kid, I used to tape record North Stars games off of the radio (Al Shaver being the radio voice). These tapes were from the prime Ciccarelli years with the North Stars since he (and Wayne Gretzky) was a personal favorite.

I bet there are still a few tapes in a box somewhere in the family home (my mom still lives there). I may have to look for those and see if anything can be transferred to YouTube or something. I've never transferred anything like that before but it would be cool if I found something.

RIP Al Shaver. Thanks for so many great calls (and memories)

I think one of my buddies I grew up with still has Al’s call of Tom Reid’s improbable penalty shot goal against Ken Dryden and the Canadians.

One of my strongest memories of Al Shaver was from game 6 of the Stanley Cup semi-finals vs Montreal in 1971. The North Stars trailed in the series (as well as the game) 3-2. They pulled goalie Cesare Maniago in the closing moments and apparently had tied the game in the final seconds on a goal by Ted Hampson. Unfortunately, the goal was waved off as the clock had run down and the goal judge was unable to engage the red light. Were modern technology available, it's likely a review would have shown the goal to be good and the game would have moved to overtime. It was literally agony to ecstasy in a matter of seconds and Al's voice told us everything we needed to know over the radio.
I spent so much time in my youth listening to Al Shaver with the North Stars, Herb Carneal with the Twins and Ray Christensen with the Gophers, that I thought of them as friends. Rest in peace Al. You brought so much joy to so many people. What a wonderful legacy.

Out here on the prairie, my first exposure to hockey was listening to KSTP AM fading in and out and listening to Al Shaver calling the North Star games.  Hockey was a non factor out here and Al's voice was my introduction to the sport.

Haha I had no idea Spectrum was still a thing (if even the current version is somehow related). I was thinking of when it first started in the early 80's and iirc was one of the first of its kind at the time.

What really strikes me about PA (in recent years) that annoys me is (for example) he’s interviewing Fitch this morning & he feels the need to be glib & cute & kid around (about Fitch sitting in stands on crutches) the time he essentially wastes doing this…instead of just interviewing the guy in a professional manner. It’s evident he’s so uncomfortable asking pointed or hard questions, he can’t help but go in a different direction. And the other (worse part of it) is him acting like he’s the insider & can go that route….largely because he views the listeners…as just a bunch of uninformed rubes.

PA is like Tom Bernard. He's immature.

Their light and airy facades are the masks worn by cut-ups who lack self-confidence or suffer from low self-esteem. They are insufferable, puerile boobs. I understand why they have a radio audience. There are plenty of people out there who appreciate their meaningless drivel.

What escapes me is why PA calls games for a team that plays in the biggest sports league in America.
