Lindenwood forward Hunter Johannes is transferring to UND for his 5th year. Graduated high school with Casey Mittelstadt at EP in 2017?

He will fit perfectly with the Whioux. 87 minutes in penalties including 5 five minute ones-- 1 charging and 4 contact to the head majors. Plus he did this.. a real character guy.. Schlossman wrote an article about him today that he always wanted to play for the Whioux...

What an a$$hole.
Seriously, he could not have found a more perfect fit.

The best thing that ever happened to the Gophers was getting out of a conference with those thugs.
Any thoughts on Pehrson? Could be a solid defenseman with experience to fill in for the defensemen moving on.

Nnnnnnnope. Unless he wants to ride pine as the 8th defenseman.
I see Jack Perbix is back in the Portal
Conor McMenemin from Penn State to UMD.
So why so many from BU and Mich in the transfer portal?
Aloha!

With programs like those I assume a similar situation to the Gophers last year. Incoming class is full of studs and not enough people are graduating.
Do we expect David Silye to follow to Bucky? If not, I wonder if Bob has any interest.

Word from within is that Silye is going to go pro, not sure with who but he isn't looking to return to college hockey. Besides this would be his second transfer, he came from Clarkson to the Mavs in 2021. The other three Mavs in the portal are going to other programs.

Or Wisconsin.

Seriously though, that seems like a surprising development. To the more plugged in, should we be surprised? Does he not see the opportunity he apparently saw at this time last year?

Not too shocking. He was slotted to be 6th or 7th D next year and likely wants top 4 minutes somewhere else. The portal giveth and the portal taketh. Good luck to Matt.
100% speculation but could Johnson be considering a return? That would certainly create more competition.
This is only a WAG....anything to avoid Buffalo. ? ?

I'd can confirm he has entered the portal officially, it's not just hearsay. Is that a trustworthy twitter account?
What do you think @northerngopher218 ?
With this development it seems the red river of the north could flood soon due to drooling fans.

Why would we he redshirt all year though?
Why would we he redshirt all year though?
He wanted to finish his academic program at the UMN and preserve two years of eligibility.
How dare he want to graduate from one school before moving on to another school? Doesn't he know it's suppose to be all about playing hockey and if need be to transfer every season in order to play hockey? ?

If you don't play for at least 3 schools nowadays, you're doing it wrong.

O.K., this makes a lot of sense. I should be used to this kind of thing from following the women’s game. A lot of those transfers are just as much academically driven.

He’s headed to Madison.

I mean I get wanting to have a bunch of players that know your style go with you...but not sure this is the best use of time and resources for a coach at a Big Ten school.

I would expect Tassy to announce his commitment to Bucky this week. Thus ending the exodus of Mavs players from the program.

Yikes. Good luck to the new regime.
This is the new college hockey, I guess. It gives me one more reason to pine over the old days.
Teams gutted by departures are left in a world of hurt. Once a couple of guys leave, panic sets in and players start combing through their options. Teams are built and torn down simultaneously...probably not what the NCAA had envisioned.
I suspect the Mankato pipeline gives Hastings his fastest start, but eventually, he'll have to deal with the same thing Motzko has to. There will be young skill players who want to go to Madison straight out of high school.
The portal seems to make the rich richer and the poor... well poorer. That said I like that the Gophs haven't had to dip into it extensively to remain relevant as the best teams have not been portal-laden (like Nodak...) in the NCAAs. To me that shows that our recruit pipeline is very healthy, which it is.
I would think Mankato's new regime should be able to find similar players that they have been getting the past decade, but it may take a while for that talent to fill in an entire roster as they currently have like a single line of their previous team left.. I would think the success they have had the previous 5-7 years should draw kids to want to play for them even with a new helmsman.

The portal gives teams the option of bringing in players who have proven themselves in the league. It's like grabbing 2-year players from juniors but on steroids.

I think Brad is one of the best college hockey reporters in the business, but I chuckle when writes that every portal transfer that goes to the Whioux is the the best of the best. Every player coming in is the next Toews, Sanderson and Belfour. While it may be true that Pehrson played with Hughes at the end of the year, Truscott was with Hughes until he got hurt at which time Pehrson was on the 3rd pair. Thomas played with Faber some this year, but I would not call him a first pair defender (yet).

There's little to celebrate other than our demise in the title game for the Hawks Faithful.. The can over promise their new D man all they want. I'm sure they'll love finishing lower than 17th in the country again next year...
Every time I see a piece that Schloss has written from now on I'll be reminded of that fantastic Motzko quote.. "They let you in here huh?"

BREAKING: UND adds Transfer McFifthyear out of the portal who will undoubtedly add nothing to the team and will take half his time at UND adjusting to the new systems as well as take valuable minutes from the underclassmen. Never change Nodak.
Last year’s team was really good but do you know what it was missing? A 25 year old grad transfer from Bentley playing over Brody Lamb on the 4th line.

Beat me to it and took the words right out of my mouth
Michigan backfills with a better player probably anyways.

Hopefully Bob is talking to some people/ we get official decisions from people so we can fill holes as well if needed

I posted this years ago, but Brad is a good writer and provides excellent coverage. However, he remains, first and foremost a fanboy. I don't know if he does it because he truly believes it or if he does it because it secures his job because his readers eat it up.
