Can't blame them for trying to shoot their shot after hiring Fickell, but whomever takes this job has to dig them out of a much deeper hole so it's obvious an existing coach with really good teams probably isn't going to be interested unless the money REALLY blows them away.
I would imagine those were faster no's than most of my high school date requests!

Cooley 1st team
Knies, Snuggerud, LaCombe 2nd team
Faber, Close honorable mentions
Cooley, Knies and Fantilli are the Hobey Hattrick finalists

Cooley and knies in hobey final 3!
WOW! Congrats to Knies and Cooley!
If only Knies was good enough to make CHN's First Team..... dumb asses. LOL.Cooley, Knies and Fantilli are the Hobey Hattrick finalists

It will be interesting who will make the real All American west teams.

It is entertaining to watch the people who are up in arms that Hudson or Polin are not in the top 3. Do some of these "experts" realize they are not the only voters? Woden does a lot of good for college hockey, but boy, he has a tendency to believe his opinion is always 100% right and everybody else is wrong.
I think Fantilli is the favorite and then there could have been 6 others who could have been in the top 3.

Good Lord people are losing their minds over Knies being named. I hope he draws upon that and beats BU etc. into submission
I get all their arguments, I really do. Hutson and Polin are fantastic players that had fantastic seasons. If the Hobey is a points race then make it a points race. I think Knies is a top 3 player in college hockey. A better player right now than Lane Hutson.
I think Knies is Hobey. Fantilli may be the best offensive player in college hockey, but Hobey is about more than scoring, and Knies is the best all-around forward there is.
Cooley, Knies and Fantilli are the Hobey Hattrick finalists

So Cooley and Fantilli are both freshman. Is the Hobey going to go to a Fr? Plus it is more than just hockey and certainly more than just points. Academics, service, leadership. Since Cooley has apparently all but given up on going to class that’s a ding on him. I’m trying to look at the choices without Gopher glasses, but I really see Knies as the complete package.
Note: Due to inflation dirty deeds will no longer be done dirt cheap.
One of the big things about Hobey Baker's legacy is what an honorable person he was (military and almost no penalties taken). One of the stories that is told about him is when he went to the other team's locker room after a game to apologize for taking a penalty.
I think it would be interesting if the Hobey was given to a player who is top 12 in the country in penalty minutes (Fantilli).
Knies has a real shot.
If the voting was done earlier this week that might hurt him since he wasn't at his best his past weekend due to not feeling well.

Do we actually know this or is this continued speculation? This is not meant as a shot against you just asking the question to all GPLers.
I believe he said in an interview that going to class isn't his favorite part of playing college hockey or something.
I thought someone one here said final voting was done before regionals so the winner was already decided before last weekend.
Has anyone ever been to a Hobey ceremony? I’m thinking of going but curious if it would be a madhouse of fans.

I don't have an answer for you, but here is some additional info for you and other Gopher fans interested in going:
"The winner will be revealed on Friday, April 7 at Sparkman Wharf, near Amalie Arena on the Tampa waterfront. It will be an outdoor event that is open to the public, during the off day of the Frozen Four weekend"

That's a far cry from not actually going to class. Maybe he's not, but you don't have to love school to participate
This is from Mike McMahon's article about his Hobey voting process on Monday. So, it looks like the voting process took place this week. I wish all of these processes would be more transparent and firm dates and times for the votes are posted so everyone can follow along.
https://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2023/03/27_Who-are-the-Hobey-Favorites.php
Voting for the 2023 Hobey Baker Award began Monday; ballots from the selection committee are due Tuesday. Voters will vote for their top five choices. After that, the ballots are sealed, and the top three vote-getters will be announced (the “Hobey Hat Trick”). The winner of the award will be announced next week at the Frozen Four.

No, you are correct, I was being sarcastic. He can’t just stop going, he still needs to be academically eligible. But I think college or class isn’t really on his radar, maybe after his NHL career he’d come back. But I’ll stand by my point that a so-so student who has admitted he isn’t interested in class will get dinged on the Hobey scholastic portion.

Going to class wasn't my favorite part of college either. I still went and did my best though. Here's to hoping he is still going to class, comes back for his sophomore year, and I will the powerball.
Hate to say it but the kid from Mich will get it
Aloha!
Speculation on the thing called twitter is that the BADgers are getting close to naming a coach.

How did you find out already? They should look into renaming the award if that kid wins.
If it were a player of the year award I think Fantilli should probably get it. However, it isn't.
There are four criteria against which nominees for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award are considered:
- Strength of character, on and off the ice
- Contribution to the integrity of the team and outstanding skills in all phases of the game
- Scholastic achievement and sportsmanship
- Compliance with all NCAA rules, including being a full-time student in an accredited college or university and completing 50 percent or more of the season
If I was betting it would be on Knies...but I'm not betting 😉
I honestly don't think Cooley or Fantilli should get it.
But he would never leave Mankato for B1G money.
It's amazing to me that people are treating this like they just hired Scottie Bowman in his prime.
Did they not think the Badgers were going to hire a decent coach?
Calling Dan Myers for his reaction...

Very interested to see how he recruits for that team
And that sounds you hear is Mankato's Relevancy dying.
I don't think it is a great view personally but solid. They won't be a joke anymore that is for sure.
The question is who will be the bottom... someone from Sconnie/MSU/Notre Dame will underperform every year.

It's Ciskie that is damn near drooling himself in excitement which is interesting.

Well he won't need to recruit geriatrics at least.

PSU may be back in the cellar before they know it…
I'd be surprised if Fantilli won just because of how big of a dbag he is, that has to account for something.
Really interested to see how his coaching style changes now that he can land blue chippers.
The Big 10 has never been deeper. All 7 teams should have legitimate tournament aspirations next season. Wow.
I think Hastings will need a season or two to get that program turned around, but I do suspect they'll be in the tournament discussion again soon. The Big 10 has never been deeper. All 7 teams should have legitimate tournament aspirations next season. Wow.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?
Interesting move. Didn’t see that coming
Well folks here in Mankato are shocked as sh*t about this. The people in the know didn't know so Hastings did a great job of flying this under the radar. We'll see if there is an exodus of players here now. Hirose and Pavel were two that people didn't see leaving early so maybe that should have been a signal that something was going to happen. Good for Hastings and the B1G but Kato State may come back to earth for a couple years now. The CCHA just got jumbled on who will be the team to beat.
I am the official Iowa Hawkeye football fan of GPL!
Oh Lord please help Mike Hastings see the light to change his style of play now that he has the ability to recruit offensively skilled players. This could be painful to watch for a while. Hopefully Bob figures out how to beat this agonizing style of play.
Contract details... Horns down..

That's the hope, but I've always wondered what a team might look like if a coach tried to mix in a few blue chippers with a Mankato type of roster? I personally wouldn't want to watch it, but I bet that a team like that would be successful. Jeff Jackson did something kind of like it at Lake St in the 90'sVery interested to see how he recruits for that team
Well he won't need to recruit geriatrics at least.
I’m sleepy just thinking of upcoming wi series’s.
