Gopher Season Over With 6-2 B1G Quarters Loss to PSU

State College, PA – After an uncharacteristically disappointing regular season, the Minnesota Gophers were hoping to turn the page in the one-and-done Big Ten playoffs.

For better or worse, the book on the 2025-2026 Gopher Hockey season has now been officially shut.

A 4-0 deficit was too much to overcome for Minnesota, as the Gophers (11-22-3) dropped their one and only playoff game to the Penn State Nittany Lions (21-12-2) by a 6-2 final score, ending the 25-26 season early.

Penn State took the lead in the game early, with Charlie Cerrato scoring just 3:10 into the first to set the tone for the Nittany Lions. Mac Gadowsky padded the lead 13:18 into the first to send PSU into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Penn State added two quick-strike goals midway through the second period to extend the lead to 4-0 before Javon Moore lit the lamp for the Gophers late in the 2nd to give Minnesota a semblance of hope.

Aiden Fink’s goal 7:56 into the put the nail in the coffin for Minnesota, extinguishing much of the Gophers’ hopes. Jacob Rombach scored late to make it a 5-2 game, but PSU’s late empty netter ended the scoring at 6-2.

The game was the final career game for seniors Brody Lamb, Luke and John Mittelstadt, Cal Thomas, and Zach Wiese. Thank you to each for displaying Pride On Ice.

Thoughts now turn to potential other departures, and dreaming about what could be next season. Minnesota was one of the youngest teams in college hockey in 25-26, and many of the growing pains they experienced should serve them well to spring into 26-27 a stronger unit. Look to next-year’s potential senior class of Luca Di Pasquo, Tanner Ludtke, Jimmy Clark, Axel Begley, and Nathan Airey to lead the team, alongside upperclassmen Brodie Ziemer, Erik Pahlsson, Leo Gruba, Graham Harris, Max Rud, August Falloon, Beckett Hendrickson, and John Whipple.
