If the new software will have the feature of going to the last message read,  I am all for it.

I do not believe anything other than a PHP based forum will do that. But that type of board is what I was trying to get rid of due to so many issues keeping up to date. But it would have a section showing all unread posts and topics.

But a few things that we used to have and currently do not have that would be back.

• No ads for Golden members.
• Being able to @ mention users. This will give them notifications if they are mentioned.
• Just better notifications all around. For likes, dislikes and whatnot.

Actually.... I think it DOES have the option to go directly to the first UNREAD post.

As you can see... That upgrade went really bad. (all my fault)

We lost a day of posts because of it. So I will put this upgrade on hold for now.

Haha ok that explains it. I thought I was going coo-coo for a moment because I checked 3 threads showing as unread and yet the last posts were ones I knew I had already seen.

I created a post just for the outage too.

Where GPL goes, we will follow. The work to keep this site up is insane, man, and we are very grateful for it.

Starting to think that the switch over could take most of the evening. But then I need to update the color scheme of the new board and do a bunch of other things as well. So I am thinking that we will be down for a day or so.

So you're saying there will be some major development in the next 24 hours. Perhaps the long awaited Bobby Brink commitment?

Didn't work...

I got the board installed. All the forums setup. The users moved over. But I could not get the topics and posts moved over. I will keep trying. At least this time my backup was much better and I could restore it right where we left off.

So carry on for now.

I am fine with it not working yet. I learn more each time. Just need to figure more things out and move on from there.

I was able to get the website php version updated from 7.4 to 8..... So that is good!

I know a lot of us ask/whine about this, but does this just not seem like what should be a standard feature by now?  Like, who has a message board software that's all about - "just figure out what you last read, that's not our problem".  Ok, obviously several do, but it seems odd to me.

Not a reflection on GPL or Jupiter.  Just me on my little soap box not understanding how developers can't see basic functionality needs in their space of innovation.

I will try again tomorrow... I think that php upgrade may have messed things up. I think I have fixed that for now. So we'll see.

Okay gang.... The switch is complete!

But I still have a ton of things to do, so please be patient. Still working on colors and other features. 

I will post some instructions and tips when I get the chance.

One thing everyone should do is go in to your profile and set the time zone. You'll find it.

You may also want to go down to the bottom of the main forum or even individual forums and click the "Mark all read" link. Otherwise the entire board will be unread to you since it is new software.

Testing quote feature

FYI... If you are "GOLDEN" or were in the past, you will not see any ads on the forum pages and topics. It will just take me some time to get all of you added to that group. I have to go 1 by 1 to assign those that have donated. Just give it time and you'll see those ads go away.

I have a master list that I am going through.

I highly recommend that you MUTE Mentioning emails bell button in your profile.

Yes... Look for the "NEW" icon.

It is more of a marker... I believe that if you click the post, it will bring you to the first unread.

Cover images in your profile will likely not save right now. I believe it is a bug in the software. So I made the default a generic GPL image.

When you reply, there is a GIPHY icon in the corner for you to search and post gifs.

Yeah, I marked all "as read" and still have to click on the topic, then click on the latest page number, then scroll down, unless it's on the list to the right, "recent posts."

I think this may be correct. I think it only works if you have actually BEEN to the thread before. I notice some links have the proper topic id's and what not that will take you to the unread. While others do not. Turns out I had never visited those threads since I activated the new board.

So it appears this works better as we use it more.  

Wait it might have now just worked for this thread only so far.

Any time you switch back-end engines on a system like this, it:

A - Takes some time and patience from everyone to get accustomed to it

B - Takes some time before all the little features fall into place correctly

Give it a couple days, but it SEEMS like the way I explained it is how the system works.  Once you've been through all the active threads, I suspect it's work right.  I'm taking some time right now to go through and open most of the threads to the last page, and will update tomorrow/Saturday as there's more activity to test agains.
