God damn it, you don’t need to block punts to beat the Bears at home. So disappointing to run into kicker giving Bears a ist down after stopping them 🤬 Edit - D comes through again & gets 4th down stop. 🙏
Feels like they’re thinking too much on offense again. But maybe against a team like the Bears you can get away with a little bit of experimentation. Hope they don’t let these guys back into it, though.
Welp.
*this was posted just before it was reported a flag was thrown to take away a Bears TD 😂
This pulling away in the 4th quarter thing feels weird.
As ugly as this game has been, I always felt that MN was in control of the game.
And looks like they will be 1-0 when I wear my Van Ginkel jersey.* 😉
*Felt I needed an upgrade. My only other Vikes jersey is a Jack Del Rio, circa 1993 or so.

Going to ask another dumb question...
Why is okay to absolutely destroy the punter if you block the punt?
But if you barely miss the ball and accidentally graze the punter... Well that's a penalty, we can't allow that.
Why is okay to destroy a receiver if he catches the ball, but not okay if he doesn't catch it, due to the hit?
😉

@the-rube I've seen a lot of guys get tackled hard, with the ball just out of reach, over their head, or dropped, and no call. Pretty regularly.
If you're protecting the punter, why is he allowed to be blown up as long as the ball gets blocked? Just seems weird
Can’t answer the question posed, but that was a funny block. Did it with his face. 😆
No excuse for the blocked punt. Ty Chandler totally wiffed on the guy who blocked it, but I put it more on the special teams coach, Bears had been hinting at going after a punt block the entire game.
12 wins and 2 losses.
Given the proximity for a blocked punt, you're most likely to hit the punter in some way, shape, or form. Same with FG attempts.@the-rube I've seen a lot of guys get tackled hard, with the ball just out of reach, over their head, or dropped, and no call. Pretty regularly.

Seeing remaining scheds for DET, PHI, MN....PHI has the inside track for the #1, IMO.
DET/MN is a tossup for that, but I think with DET's injuries, MN has the edge for the division.

The reason is the ball is tipped. Same reason there is no pass interference on a tipped pass. (And why you used to be taught to annihilate the QB on tipped passes)
Not saying I agree with it but that is why.
Tipped pass? Body slam the guy you're guarding. Fair game.

12 wins thru 14 games is the most wins for a Vikings team since 1998.
Just give Kwesi, KOC, and Flores lifetime contracts. 😉
One win from having 13 wins in two of their first three seasons.
Flores is really gonna cost you, to prevent him from being an HC again.

I don't think he's asking about the mechanics of the call but rather the logic and I kind of see his point. A punter is always going to be "vulnerable" from the time they kick the ball and onto their follow-through.
btw I would have liked to have seen what the offense would have done differently (if anything) had Chicago not pissed down their leg on offense time and time again and actually made a game of it. They were given plenty of chances and either had too many dropped balls, too many penalties or Williams just flat out missed open receivers.
MN was killing themselves with penalties (Cam, looking at you). Too many 3rd and longs. Thankfully, the Bears were so inept it really didn't make a difference.
As for the rules, well, there are too many disagreements between me and the NFL for a simple post. That would be a lecture.

The reason is it would make blocking punts impossible if you could still call roughing after the block. No one would even try...it wouldn't be worth it.
At least that was the original logic...the NFL has no logic in its rules anymore it makes less sense than hockey officiating.
Flores is really gonna cost you, to prevent him from being an HC again.
Not as long as his lawsuit is still active.
Plus at this point he might not want to be head coach again.
Both are fair points.
I will say, some desperate team is gonna try (CHI? NYG?)

I am probably asking this poorly... I get it would make blocks much more difficult if you could call roughing after a block.
My issue is more, the guy goes for the block and barely grazes the kicker (doesn't even hit the plant leg) and that gets called.
So it's a risk going for the block. Just seems like such a departure. I missed the ball, now I have to avoid all contact with the kicker. Vs I tipped the ball, now I get to railroad the kicker through the end zone.
If the ball is tipped could you completely level Patrick Mahomes? I'm guessing not. (Which is a whole different story with him faking to go OB and then picking up extra yards when the defender lets up, yet crying foul every time he gets hit moderately hard...)
Sorry. I won't derail the Vikings thread.
Before the NFL started protecting qbs yes on a tipped play the QB could get rocked. Now...not so much because qbs are the only position the NFL cares about.
As for the Punter...he is only unprotected if the contact happens because of attempting to block the kick. If some player who was nowhere near making the play lights him up that will likely be unsportsmanlike. But if you go for a block and tip it contact is allowed within reason. (No trucking a guy out of the end zone)
There is also a reason there is two different penalties in the pros. If you lightly hit the punter missing a block it's ruled differently than if you hit him hard and square. (Or the plant leg)
It's a weird situation.
@handyman Thank for the explanation. That's largely the problem, I don't watch enough NFL football to pick up on the subtle differences like that. Just saw our guy miss a punt and hit the kicker and then they get the ball and a first down. Then our punter gets hit much harder but the ball is blocked and they get the turnover. Thought it was a little strange.

i think he's already said he wants to be a HC again. From Nov 12
Vikings DC Brian Flores says he 'would love' to be NFL HC again - ESPN
Then if I were him I would drop the lawsuit...because he will be blackballed until he does. No one wants to hire a guy who will likely sue them if they fire him. It doesn't help that Tua is badmouthing him...
(not saying I disagree or agree with his lawsuit...just saying the NFL doesn't play around)
Some guys are meant to be coordinators and are great at it. (Norv Turner, Wade Phillips, Josh McDaniels/most of Belichecks Guys...etc.) He might be one of those guys.
Agree with Handy… I doubt he becomes a head coach until he drops the lawsuit
