They look like this could be a fun season
Aloha!
Going to be interesting to see how they handle Darnold and resigning him. I would think after the week 5 game vs the Jets makes sense as they go into their bye week.
Also curious how low of term they could get? Would he sign for two years if the Vikes threw some solid $ at him?
Unless he's willing to sign for backup money, I wouldn't even consider re-signing him until the end of the season
There’s little chance Vikings do anything beyond 2024 with Darnold contract until the seasons completed, that’s not in the best interest of either party. If Darnold continues on this path the entire season, he will be set up to get a phat multi-year contract with somebody (including the Vikings) it’s in Darnold’s best interests to bet on himself, so he’s not going to sign a team friendly short term extension during the bi week. Sam just turned 27 in June, he could play for another decade & if this level of success extends to January, he will be looking to 💵 in big time + the offers will be there. There’s no way Vikings can afford paying Darnold long term & then still plan on JJ taking over down the road.
Correct, JJ is making $22M per year and needs to play. He showed signs he was picking up the game in the preseason and possibly beat out Darnold. I am excited to see what JJ can do next year. They can't pay both players big money next year and have enough to spread around to the other positions. Hopefully Darnold is everything we need for 2024 and moves on to an AFC team with great success. There’s little chance Vikings do anything beyond 2024 with Darnold contract until the seasons completed, that’s not in the best interest of either party. McCarthy is the future. Hopefully he uses his IR time well to pick up the nuances of this Vikings offense and learns about reading NFL defenses.
If the Vikings want to pay up....throw a ton of money in the direction of Flores and make him the second highest paid coach in the NFL, right behind KOC.
@bertogliat JJ's total contract over 4 years is 22 mil. Not 22M per/year.
If Darnold were to theoretically able keep this going all to most of the season there is no way you let him walk at 27 years old. JJ has never thrown a pass in the NFL.
It would be great if McCarthy is the future but in no way shape or form is he the future in any sort of for certain way.
8 teams currently have a backup making 4 million per year or more.

@bearpaw28 I would say there is more than a little chance. When a team finds a QB for their franchise they will look to make a move so its certainly in the Vikes interest to do something before the season ends and he is a FA.
As for Darnold yeah, he could certainly bet on himself but he also has no contract at all for next year and as we saw yesterday's close call, last year with Cousins, this year with JJ, the examples are endless at the QB position alone, all it takes is one play. Also, we all know how his career has gone & there is tremendous value in finally finding the right fit. Like you said he is 27 and if he figures it out and finds the right team he has 10+ years possible in this league. 27 is nothing for a QB.
If you could look at signing him for 2 years right now and he gets paid, there is a lot of interest for both parties. (Most of the QB deals this year were for 4 years and QBs reupping with teams they were already on).
Here are the yearly cap hits, he would fall somewhere in this field.
Jared Goff | Lions | $27,211,832
Geno Smith | Seahawks | $26,400,000
Kirk Cousins | Falcons | $25,000,000
Jordan Love | Packers | $20,757,731
Justin Herbert | Chargers | $19,345,675
Aaron Rodgers | Jets | $17,161,112
Trevor Lawrence | Jaguars | $15,029,725
Jalen Hurts | Eagles | $13,558,800
Derek Carr | Saints | $12,668,000 |
Hypothetical. If at the bye week the Vikes offered 2 years, 20 million hard seeing Darnold pass that up. Or anytime into middle of the season.
No move should be made until at least the midpoint of the season. The league is filled with QBs that put together a decent run and then cash in and go nowhere. Hell it wasn't that long ago people were thinking Josh Dobbs was the future. Darnold is playing well but lets see what happens when he has a bad game...whether that exposes him or is just a blip before we start pontificating on whether to sign him for multiple years as anything but a backup.
I’m overjoyed Darold is off to a brilliant start after 3 games…but until he puts up a complete season performing well, it’s not in the Vikings interest (or frankly Darnold’s) to negotiate a future contract. He’s making 10 mil this season, even if it’s ends today, he will be more than wealthy. So for him, it’s about establishing what he’s capable of during a complete season, same goes for Vikings in evaluating his performance. Accordingly, Darnold is not signing a team friendly deal early to hedge against him possibly failing later. Just my opinion
@bearpaw28 Twenty million a year isn't "team friendly" that is the market. Two years might be the compromise but again he has no deal or team right now for next year. And he would be betting on himself, that he can be the QB of this team for the next two years.
Its all hypotheticals right now based on him continuing this of course. I used the bye week as an example because of the extra week it gives to get a deal done in the off week. But more realistically it could be a week 7-10 type of thing.
AI Press Conference, NSFW, but man, it's hilarious!

Aloha!
3rd and 14 no problem 31 yard pass to Nailor and then next play a 29 yard TD pass to Addison.
3 minutes into the game Vikings up 7-0
SKOL Vikings Lets GO!!!!!
Darnold to Oliver on a short TD pass. 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter Vikings up 14-0!!!
Two Vikings possessions two 73 yard TD drives.
Darnold is slicing and dicing 6 of 7 for 88 yards plus a Packer defensive PI and defensive holding for another 13 yards.
Vikings D picks off Love.
Christian Watson with the injuryVikings D picks off Love and Love got his leg pinned to the ground on the play he is down injured on the field.

Yep I had the wrong guy (my post has now been edited to correct the error). Watson is questionable to return going to the lock room on the cart likely for X rays.
Addison 8 yard TD run on the jet sweep. Addison after missing 2 and half games with an ankle injury has two TDs in a little over a quarter.
Vikings up 21-0 three minutes into the 2nd quarter!!
SKOL VIKINGS LETS GO!!!!!!!!
There were a lot of Vikings fans who criticized Kwesi for drafting Jordan Addison I have a feeling they are OK with the pick now after the production he has shown in his first year plus.
The Vikings are in great hands with Kwesi, Flores, and KOC.
The undrafted rookie Packer kicker has missed 37 and 49 yard field goals. There is a good chance he wouldn't get another chance to kick a FG today with the score the way it is so the Vikings D is likely to get multiple chances to get 4th down stops.
2nd pick of the game for the Vikings D!!!!!
Darnold TD pass to Jefferson!!!!
Vikings up 28-0!!!!! 5 and half minutes left in the 2nd quarter.
Packers and WHOLE NFL you have a MAJOR PROBLEM on your hands!!!!!
Holy Shnikies!
lol of course it’s a bonehead move like that to get GB on the board.

Probably the most excited I’ve seen a punter get… the Packer punter was running and skipping down the field with his #1 finger up in the air.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Quick 3 and out for the Vikings D to start the 2nd half.
Keep your stick on the ice...
The Refs blow the call even on replay. The Packer player didn't complete the INT catch until he was out of bounds.
This takes away the Vikings chance to score with the ball 3rd and one at the Packer 20 yard line if it is called incomplete.
Former ref watching the replay said it should have been called incomplete.
Being an official is like being a weatherman… you can be wrong and still continue to have a job.

That’s two times I’m very glad we didn’t get the interception one of our DB’s was hoping for. 😂
Love thinks highly of himself as a veteran all pro QB. After every incomplete pass, his arms are in the air for PI. And every time he goes to the ground, he’s looking at the stripes for roughing the passer.

Thinking the same thing. Though playing in the defensive backfield you should be field and down awareness. Though your mentality trained to go for the ball and the heat of the moment you can forget.

Seen this script before.
I hate this movie.

Props to the NFL scriptwriter. I did NOT see that interception coming.
Tact is the ability to step on a man's toes without messing up the shine on his shoes - Harry S Truman
A clutch drive ending in a field goal gives the Vikings a two possession lead and then the defense picks off Love for the 3rd time today.
Vikings up 31-22 with 6 minutes left.
Stellar play by Murphy
GB fumbles with 4:18 remaining. MN ball at the Packer 42. The scriptwriter must REALLY hate Green Bay.

Jefferson with the sweet catch and toe drag for the 1st DOWN!!!!
Go Pack Go has been replaced by GO HOME PACK!!!!!! Packer fans leaving early.
Jefferson with the sweet catch and toe drag for the 1st DOWN!!!!
On Vikings challenges the calls were correctly reversed. On official reviews, the stripes incorrectly got the call wrong… lol!!!
Keep your stick on the ice...
They just gave GB the ball on a spot that was off by at least 4 feet
I don’t understand Flores dialing down the defense in the second half
We likely win this game, but our defense isn’t as good as we thought it was.
Not quite the satisfying win it seemed like it was gonna be at halftime
The Vikings are 4-0 and none of their opponents have ever had the ball in the 4th quarter in a one posession game. The Vikings defense gave up some yards and points in the 4th quarter against the 49ers and Packers but it was always when they were up by two or three scores.
SKOL VIKINGS LETS GO!!!!!!

Exactly!!! The ref thought Nailor's knee went down when he slipped but it didn't (which was shown on replay) so he should have recieved credit for reaching out the ball for the first down. The clock would have gone down to the 2 minute warning (the Packers were out of time outs) setting up the Viking for three knee downs and a two score win 31-22.
