World class underwhelming win
Vikes lucky to beat the Lions who have not won a road game yet with their current coach
Aloha!
The Lions finally remember they are the lions.

Through the first two weeks of the season-
26 field goal attempts of over 50 yards
22 field goals made of over 50 yards
of those 22 field goals made, only 6 were 56 yards or longer.
Only 16 teams had even attempted a single field goal of 50 yards or more
Not sure what games you are watching?

We’re going to pump up Kirk after that game? ? He was awful for most of the game against a terrible Lions team and the only reason he even had a chance at a comeback is the Lions coach is an absolute moron. Yeah, Kirk is a winner! ?

32 games, 26 field goal attempts over 50 yards. Do you struggle with math?
How do we block people?

How, exactly, does having fewer 50+ yard attempts than there have been games line up with your "Multiple 50 yard attempts in every game I've seen" statement?
50+ yard FGs are still relatively rare, if not as much as they were in years past.
B1G refs... corrupt, or just incompetent?

The Lions ain't terrible this year. They're one of the top scoring offenses in the NFL through 3 weeks and have two closes losses (today included, where a very poor coaching decision cost them IMHO).
As for Kirk, he wasn't great today but he was great in the fourth quarter. He had a couple missed throws and a couple drops from WRs and just overall the offense seemed really disjointed for a long stretch. That being said, the team was down 10pts in the 4th quarter and he led them to a win. That's what fans have been begging for him to do since he came here.
Did the Vikings win?
wouldn’t know it on this board. Salty bunch. ?

I mean, they didn’t lead until there was 45 seconds left.
Edit: Or are you referring to the discussion since the game ended? Because then I agree it is hard to tell. ?

The Lions coach gave the Vikings that game. Kirk doesn’t even have a chance if he doesn’t make some bone headed decisions. I’m going to wait a little bit before I’m convinced the Lions are not terrible. I just laugh when the Kirk apologists get all giddy about a win like today. Wow….we beat the Lions at home. ?
Did Kirk lead the team to a GW drive? Yes. That is a fact.
Was he given the opportunity by a boneheaded coach's decision? Yes. That is a fact.
He took that opportunity, and cashed in. Yet, the haters are still not satisfied.
I called out Kirk last week for being sh*y. I am far from a Kirk apologist.

I gave up on the Vikes long before the game was over. They looked awful. My 14 yo so still believes in the “chip and a chair” philosophy. I didn’t crush his hopes when he said there is still time to pull this off. And by God, they did it.
The Vikings will crush him another day, I guess.

I appreciate the data lookup. I wasn't going to take the time.
I realize that kickers have better range these days so I understand bigbeer's point to an extent. But I also think that game (and team) context is necessary.
The Lions have shown that they are a good offensive football team the first two weeks of the year and I think we would all agree that the Vikes D isn't exactly great. I think taking lower percentage long FG attempts isn't a very smart strategic move when you aren't a good defense and your opponent is playing well offensively. I'd rather punt it and make them work harder to score than set them up at close to midfield.
I think the decision on the second 56 yd attempt was an even worse decision because the first attempt by Joseph was yuck. The Lions shoved that decision down the Vikes throat five plays later with a TD. I'm glad Vikes won but I do hope the coach reflects on some of these game decisions and adjusts.
The Lions def should have punted, considering the Vikes didn't have any TOs left. Even just running the ball would have been the 2nd best decision on that 4th down. Trying for the FG was the worst decision they could have made, but of course it's the Lions, so...

As bad as the Vikes looked at times, I always felt we would have a chance at the end. They are the Lions and that's what they do. As frustrating it can be to be a Vikes fan it's got to be tuff to be a Lion fan.

And the Vikings coaches and special teams gave away multiple late 4th quarter leads (not to mention late 2nd quarter scores because of their endless usage of prevent defense) the past few years.
Kirk and the offense put them in position multiple times before and he still got blamed. Now he started a game poorly but helped them to V and also gets no credit.

I had to laugh when the color man said "this is the smart choice."
@norm Only Detroit is capable of losing that game in the way they did. Not only should they have punted, but it was the Lions who used a time out when the Vikings were the ones fighting the clock. Too funny.
That's the kind of game that you delight in winning on the road, but at home it's "Well, I guess a win is a win, but...."
@bigbeer This is a message in good faith, not picking up where we left off last week!
It seems odd to me that they keep rushing 4 when they aren't getting any pressure and a straight rush at that? Towards the end of the game they rushed 4 but at least put in a stunt and go some pressure off of it, was that the one that ended in a pic?
Seems like they are going to have to get more creative or it is going to be a long season on D and for those D backs.

Considering the fact they had been very effective on 4th downs in the game, their coach made the worst decision of the three options he had (go for it, punt, or try a longer FG). Punting it or going for it (since it would have ended the game if they made it) were better options than a FG attempt at that range. Even if he made the FG, it wasn't going to make the margin greater than one score.

After seeing the Vikings stick with a 2 deep shell most of the game against the Eagles, I’ve noticed a couple other teams doing it. Much like a Tampa 2 they are daring offenses to have the patience to settle for underneath throws and put together a 10+ play drive without getting a penalty or turnover. It seems like Donatell is going with needing pressure rushing 4 and not blitzing. The Vikings D shut out Philly in the second half and the offensive stats for both teams yesterday were similar, even if it didn’t seem like it. If you take out Detroit converting on 4th down 4 times that game looks a lot different.
With Hunter and Smith both on the field there’s no excuse for not getting pressure from the front 4 but it did look like Hunter was doubled a lot yesterday. In the NFL pressuring the QB is key and I’m not seeing going without it as a long term successful strategy.
I was hearing on the NFL network this am the Saints are already in London and the Vikes will arrive on Thursday
Aloha!
I would want the team there as early as possible to acclimate to the time change difference.

General thinking is that traveling east is a harder jet lag than going west, which is arguable but probably bears out. Good move by NO to get there earlier although going on Monday seems a little excessive and waiting until Thur seems too late. I’ll bet the NO coach gives his guys a day off in London which is pretty cool.
The Vikings have traditionally done well in London. I'd be curious of their previous travel arrangements obviously done under different regimes.
Cousins has had some wickedly bad throws today. The interception, even if the Saints player wasn’t on the field, was a pass that JJ had to dive backwards for.
A pass only the defender could catch.
Giving up 12 play scoring drives is happening way too often to this defense. Need to play more aggressively!

If you have a weak stomach, DO NOT look up the clip of Lewis Cine's injury. Pretty gnarly.
He was transported to the hospital after having an air cast on him on the field. My guess is it'll be called a dislocated ankle? It looked really rough.
Hope for the best for the kid.

I think that was Irv he was trying to throw to? On the Mathieu INT?
He took too long to pull the trigger on that one for sure. Bercich said he thought Kirk expected Irv to settle in the flat between the underneath corners and the safety over the top. But then he pump faked and allowed Mathieu to close the gap and he jumped the route easily.

What’s the first thing I do? Look it up of course. ? I think the Josh Naylor (Cleveland baseball) injury last season was worse. This ankle didn’t do a 360 like his did.
kidding aside, that sucks and I hope he has a full recovery.

Surely someone has blamed Cousins for that already.
The Saints are bad. This is ugly.
Funny thing: TDs > FGs

Refs bailed the Vikings out on that drive.
Finally a TD!
PAT miss. Sounds about right.
Love the looks on the fans faces at that last FG attempt. I haven’t seen much of the game but gather we were out-sucked?
Strange game. Definitely one you’re just happy ended up in the W column, then move on.
Double doink!
I can’t believe that FG attempt. Truest unbelievable how close that came without crossing.
The injuries are concerning. That secondary didn’t need this game at all.
Double doink!
Even after the second doink it was close to going over. Damn near parallel to the cross bar.
First time in Kirk’s career he has a winning record after week 4.
Saints had 10 penalties for 102 yards
First downs by penalty:
Vikings - 5
Saints - 0
First time in Kirk’s career he has a winning record after week 4.
I assume this is through 4 weeks. Because he definitely has had winning records in week 16-17 which is after week 4 ?
The offense again gave them a late lead only to see the defense try to give it right back at the end.
