I think they’ll pull the “no prior history” nonsense
That was a really dangerous, and totally unnecessary play by Benn. From the reverse angle you can see his stick flex as he pushes down on Stone’s head/neck. As is often said it was in no way a hockey play - Stone was already Down and Benn was not falling but purposefully struck out at Stone. I would like to say I would be surprised if there wasn’t supplemental discipline but this is the NHL.
he’ll be done for the season
Which is to say he will receive a 1 game suspension
Not that it matters, but Benn can't change their fate at this point. Players like Robertson, who was good all year, disappeared in this series. I had to actually pay attention for a bit last night to hear if Pavelski was on the ice. Both of those players have been AWOL.
It didn't help that Oettinger's head wasn't in the game last night (he was awful), but Benn pretty much put his team at a huge disadvantage from which they never recovered.
7-game series have their own quirks, and this one is no different. Dallas outplayed Vegas in the second game and probably deserved a win but didn't get it. Coming into Dallas 1-1 is a whole lot different than 0-2. Had they eked out a win in Game 2, it would be 1-2 now and Dallas would have a chance to tie the series tomorrow. Instead, they need a win just to hang on one more game. It doesn't help that their goalie play has been unpredictable...not exactly inspiring.
I think I heard last night that no team has ever survived an 0-3 hole in the semifinals, so yeah, good luck Dallas. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
The NHL can hand out whatever punishment they want, but until the players step up and declare that sh*t like what Jamie Benn did last night isn't acceptable, nothing will change. He'll get suspended for a game or two and when the Knights and Stars meet next season, gloves will be dropped, we'll have 2-3 minutes of the fish slapping dance and all will be well. Horrific, dirty cheap shots keep happening and yet no players ever denounce or ostracize the perpetrators. Not at all surprisingly, here are some responses from the Dallas side.
Peter DeBoer: "I don't think anyone in the building feels worse than he does about it. I'm not going to pile on him. He's been a leader here for his entire career and leads by example every day on and off the ice. He made a mistake. Fortunately, Mark Stone's OK. It's a reactionary sport. It's a heat-of-the-moment sport. There's a lot of stuff going on there on the ice. I'm not judge and jury. I'm not going to play that tonight". ?
Tyler Seguin: "Zero frustration with Jamie. He's one of the, if not the, best captain in this league and a top leader". ?
Joe Pavelski: "He was tied up and engaged and went for a little extra. Emotions get the best of all of us at some point. You guys ask if I'm disappointed in someone I have so much respect for? No. Who battles so hard? I have no problems with him". ?
I see plays like that and it's just sickening. Someday, someone is going to get SERIOUSLY hurt/killed. I was at the North Stars game in 1975 when Dave Forbes of Boston tried to take Henry Boucha's eye out. Disgusting. There's a lot of outrage right now at what happened last night. But if the players, whose safety is put at risk, aren't going to stand up and call it out, who are we to get upset about it?
Do we have quotes from any of these three regarding the Foligno play in round 1?The NHL can hand out whatever punishment they want, but until the players step up and declare that sh*t like what Jamie Benn did last night isn't acceptable, nothing will change. If the league started handing out meaningful suspensions the players would have no choice but to adjust. That’d be a lot easier than changing decades of hockey culture that is engrained into this generation of players. The NHL can hand out whatever punishment they want, but until the players step up and declare that sh*t like what Jamie Benn did last night isn't acceptable, nothing will change.
That’s not even the best part. Benn avoided the media after the game last night and had until today to come up with something and his excuse was "Obviously I would've liked to not fall on him and I guess use my stick as the landing point.”
So he also sucks at lying.
The dude was clearly trying to target Stone’s back and shift the momentum of the series. Instead he all but guaranteed that they lost it. Genius. That’s not even the best part. Slavin smoked by Bennett, tries to stand up and falls down in what looked like a pratfall. Bennett called for cross checking when it was obviously charging but who cares about getting it right. Slavin went totally airborne and his head hit the boards pretty hard.
Bennett wasn’t penalized at all. Florida had a power play after it.

I’m not sure how slavin didn’t see it coming, his head down obviously but still his head was up enough earlier in the play. That was brutal to watch, totally out of it trying to get up.
Burns got a piece of Tkachuk after the period there.
panthers on to the cup. lack of scoring for carolina very apparent. remind me of the lemaire wild teams trying to win every game 2-1 or 3-2 and never having the scoring star power to get over the hump
The Bob has been insane/lucky/etc whatever you wanna call it. It's incredible to watch.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
Eric Staal going to the Finals after not playing last year
Florida touches and skates the Prince of Wales Trophy… Good for them.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Yeah they really could’ve used Svechnikov and Pacioretty, also idk if Teraveinen was 100%, that’s their first line right there.panthers on to the cup. lack of scoring for carolina very apparent. remind me of the lemaire wild teams trying to win every game 2-1 or 3-2 and never having the scoring star power to get over the hump
The fact that they had the depth to get this far without them is a testament to their GM/front office.
Miami in the final… Le Sigh.
Another ( not so ) great defensive play by Suter on Vegas goal #2.

That Kiss Me commercial still gets me. The look on Dustin Brown’s face early on is perfectly placed.
Was it explained why the stripes review the high stick after a delay. I was busy talking to one of my kids at the moment, saw it but couldn't hear the tv. And after the game winner I thought ESPN was going to the post game with their hockey analyst, but went to Sports Center and nothing was ever said.
Keep your stick on the ice...
I figured they called two right away and convened for a possible double, but I couldn’t hear the TV either.
Yeah I think he couldn’t scratch his face hard enough to draw any blood so it just stayed the 2 not 4. Nothing else was said about it that I know of.
Nice dangle by LV. Suter...does something, I dunno what he was thinking on that goal.

So historic NBA game Mon night BOS coming back from down 3-0 to force game 7 never happened in 150 chances. NHL why not make their game a bit earlier like 5PM on a holiday (at least in the US)?
I have 2 TVs so I don’t care but why not take the opportunity for the earlier stage on a holiday weekend?
Vegas has been all over the Stars tonight. It will be Florida v Vegas starting on Saturday.

Any post-season that has an "L" next to Dallas' last game is always a success
Suter is getting lit up by the Dallas fans on social media.

has been awhile. They’re wanting him cut

His play has been....questionable this series. Not a hater, not a lover, just calling it as I see it.

Florida vs. Vegas for the Cup. Not a fan of either Vegas or Seattle how they got handed glorious expansion drafts. Florida and expansions prior to Vegas had to start from ground zero and build a franchise.

Yep. I couldn't root for Dallas since they stole my North Stars. And I couldn't root for Vegas since they were gifted a playoff team out of the chute.
I'll be cheering for FL in the Final. Weird.
The good news is Dallas lost.
The bad news is Vegas won.

Suter has that pass up out of the d zone but that’s all he’s clinging to imo. He really adds nothing to his game other than that and looks like a liability on the ice. I didn’t really pay much attention to his contributions but it became more noticeable this series to me. He should be gone.

Suddenly, the game is too fast for Suter. He's not the only one. The entire Dallas lineup was running around playing catch-up all game long. Pavelski, Benn, and Seguin also were pretty much invisible. Oettinger was hung out to dry a dozen times. While the Domi kid seems to like running his mouth, he doesn't do much to help his team win.
It's hard to explain how a team at home had no fight left in them in a must-win game. Chelios made a comment that made a lot of sense. When you're behind in a series 0-3, you're putting in all your energy to get back in it. The problem is that it's incredibly hard to keep it up for 4 straight games...that's why nobody wins being down that big.
Oettinger was hung out to dry a dozen times.
Even the greats... Roy, Brodeur, Hasek... would have been shelled last night and most of the series.

Suter is nowhere near the player that he was when he was here, but he's still a top 4 on just about any team in the league. And, he's still a better defenseman than anybody the Wild have.
They emptied their tanks winning games 4 and 5. Coming home and getting Benn back may have given them a little false confidence as well.
He was the only defender net front and he turned his back to a charging player and vacated the area. If you're choosing to defend F2 at least try to stop the pass. How would you expect Suter to play that better? He's doing weird sh!t.Suter has that pass up out of the d zone but that’s all he’s clinging to imo. Suter is exactly where he should be to support a puck that Johnson should have zero trouble winning. He moves toward the corner to support Heiskanen/Johnson in case they want to reverse the puck behind the net. After Heiskanen/Johnson somehow find a way to lose a 2x1 puck battle, Suter turns to pick up his responsibility and covers Marchesault while eliminating the cross ice tap-in pass. If he steps out on Barbashev, it becomes a gimme. There's only one Stars player in that video that comes even close to doing his job.He was the only defender net front and he turned his back to a charging player and vacated the area. he was fine with his stick in the shooting lane. Marchesault was not really a target anymore by the time Suter decided to make a move to him. But Suter had his back to the play when he could have taken the shooter.
But you are right in that his teammates were all shitty on that play. 4 checks his own player for some reason and the trailing forwards were not hustling.
@j22 he’s tough to defend after what was overall a rough playoff for him, but I do get what you’re saying if he’s paid that way and logs 2nd/3rd pair minutes (currently getting about 2nd pair money In Dallas plus the wild contract). He can’t play with an offensive defenseman anymore as he doesn’t have the speed anymore to bail out the other guy which I think is what Stars fans are lamenting is that it makes it tougher for Heskainen (sp?) to play up in the rush as much. That’s not Suters fault it’s where Dallas has him, but more just an assessment of where he’s at in the league now. The piling of that he should be out of the league is more than a bit of hyperbole by many suggesting it
