Have Cal and/or Stanford expressed interest in joining another conference yet? Obviously they should but I don't think I've seen anything indicating they have made themselves available for a conference speed dating session.
Funny you ask.

I'm confused why the tweet says 5 or 7 of the remaining PAC 12 schools? I thought there was only a PAC 4 left.
Stanford, Cal, Oregon State and Washington State
with the Big Ten taking USC, UCLA, Washington, Oregon
and the Big 12 taking Colorado, Utah, Arizona State, and Arizona
Are Utah, Arizona State and Arizona still in play?
@collegehockeyaddict I'm assuming the timing was after two left for the big ten and before the big 12 took others. More and more reports are coming out where the package 12 tried to survive and wasn't including Oregon State or Washington State.
At this point subscribers only matter if you can prove they watch. If they hadn't already tried that with Rutgers you might have a point but advertisers want to know people actually watch the broadcasts.
As for Stanford vs. Oregon...Washington and Oregon were coming together and truth is, Oregon is a more popular brand than Stanford is.
I am curious what conference looks at Florida State and wants them after they have thrown a hissy fit the last week about the ACC revenue sharing system. There’s no way the B1G/SEC wants to court them given this.

Well, FSU is a mere .500 in conference over the last 5-6 years in a relatively weak ACC...
I get that they are concerned about losing ground to in-state and regional $EC rivals, but they also have to earn their keep. And nobody is getting excited about having them come aboard. Can they somehow bring Bobby Bowden and his glory days back?
If the research dollars are really so much more important than Athletic TV viewership dollars, wouldn’t Stanford be the home run in the Pac12?What am I missing with the B1G not going after Cal and Stanford? Both elite institutions that bring San Fran/San Jose market. Stanford is more consistent (although in a down cycle currently) than can and Cal is kind of crazy, but with the grant/research dollars they would help bring and I would assume somewhat of a national following given the reaches of their alumni bases?
I think both are attractive, but not enough to move the direct financial needle.
As Handy notes, neither really brings the promise of eyeballs to TV sets in the San Fran area. As a result, it is unlikely that Fox/CBS/NBC is willing to pay more for the B1G games just to have those schools under the umbrella. Thus, including them would be asking current teams to take a haircut just to bring them in. So why would the B1G do that?
Neither is really interested in the Big XII, and neither are good SEC fits either. I don't see the ACC wanting to bring in two Bay Area schools and create an island way out of their geographic footprint. So there really isn't any urgency for the B1G to act with them.
Both have stellar academic profiles and bring in lots of research dollars, so there is certainly an interest to pull them in. So it is more a question of "when" in my mind. If the B1G doesn't bring them in until later, it is less to have to share the pot with now-- though I suspect the B1G will treat both as affiliate members without access to revenue or TV for scheduling purposes in the interim.
If both came to the table and said they would join the B1G for no current share, I think the B1G would jump to sign them up. So it is a matter of finding the right price point to bring them on board.
Both need to do some soul-searching, however, about their own future in athletics. Cal has struggled for a long while, and Stanford needs Notre Dame level of commitment to continue their football operations to be successful-- without an alumni network that lives and breathes football.

I think the calculation is still a "when". Why split some of the athletic-designated pot with them now when you can do so later, and get the research benefits down the line anyway? What is a few years in the life of a university?
The B1G can afford to play the long game here because there aren't good options for Stanford/Cal.
I don't see the ACC taking Stanford/Cal as being a reason for ESPN to re-open their deal. If anything, ESPN might fund at their PAC-12 level just to keep a little quality PST content, but that is relatively cheap for ESPN to do-- they would be paying that anyway. For Stanford/Cal, it is more of a "survival" than an increase. For the ACC it is a too-little/too-late effort to expand.
The ACC is in a really tough demographic spot and Stanford/Cal won't solve it for them. Unless somehow Clemson becomes a nationwide darling or Notre Dame joins as a full member (both very unlikely), ESPN is going to ride their agreement until 2035.
If the ACC breaks up in the meantime, Stanford/Cal would still be available for the B1G.
Of course, ESPN may say that Stanford/Cal bring nothing of interest to the table-- in which case you would be asking ACC members to split their already meager pot even more ways-- which is certainly not going to happen. If Stanford/Cal did bring value to the table, perhaps the PAC-12 wouldn't be in the spot they were, and/or the B1G would be bringing them in already.

The Big Ten doesn't need the research dollars from Cal and Stanford so need to court them right away. They can let things settle for a couple of years and then bring them in. They will play the same game with them they planned to do with Washington and Oregon. Stanford and Cal have nowhere else to go...
Plus, the Big Ten is always holding a spot for Notre Dame if they want it. Cal is likely never coming here Stanford and Notre Dame is the ultimate goal.
It is no secret that the B1G wants to expand into the Southeast to match population demographics. The region is growing in population and diversity-- and is fertile recruiting ground for football programs.
Other than Vanderbilt, U Florida, and U Texas, the B1G has very little interest in any other SEC schools. Actually, it will be interesting seeing how U Texas plays nice in the SEC sandbox given that it will be on even footing instead of being the big fish in small ponds. If history is a guide, expect some entertainment there down the line.
But there are a number of ACC schools that are of interest, and I would throw out:
U Miami
Georgia Tech
UNC
UVA
and maybe Duke.
(I would actually rank them in that priority order, personally)
As Handy said, Notre Dame and Stanford would be no-brainers eventually.
I still find it interesting that Arizona State is now an AAU school, as well as Utah, Arizona and Colorado. All are in growing markets that have strong B1G connections. Don't count them out if we eventually move to the Power-Two when the ACC breaks up.
The ACC is not going to survive the length of their contract and even ESPN knows it. They let people on their network say it which they tend not to do when it can have negative impact...which tells me they know the days are numbered best to let the chips fall and get more teams on their other contract.
F$U is trying to get VCs to give them the money to buy out of the deal...and obviously they won't be going alone so you have to wonder who the $EC is going to court. Normally the answer would be Miami without a second thought but I think they would go after Clemson first. They care about being able to swing their big dick on National Titles and Clemson has won the two most recent non $EC titles. Just a hunch...
I think Texa$ and especially Oklahoma made a huge mistake...like a Nebraska level mistake choosing to go to $EC. The PAC and the Big XII almost merged a decade ago, and likely could have put together a helluva conference now even without UCLA and USC. There was plenty of options to play this out differently and they chose the one that likely hurts way more than it helps. The question becomes, does aTm choose to go back...cause they 100% should.
Honestly all this drama is more fun to watch than most sports these days so there is that...
Aloha!
Yup...s*#t show. Here is the thing, they aren't getting in trouble for betting but for tampering with records by betting under other names or through family members. This is the second bunch of players that have been made public since this investigation was made public about a month ago.
Here is the thing, Iowa and Iowa State are getting nailed for this you can be damn sure it happened or is happening on tens of other campuses.

Gambling is pretty prevalent among college students. Almost 20% of college students report gambling weekly. https://www.icrg.org/cg-information/fact-sheet-gambling-on-college-campuses
It just gets quite complicated when those who determine how the bets come out are the ones making the bets...
It just gets quite complicated when those who determine how the bets come out are the ones making the bets...
Since Pete Rose I don't think it can be seen as complicated. If you can play a role in the outcome, you're done. I know that the timing of this comes at the point when Iowa opened up sports gambling and I believe that the university athletic departments just didn't get in front of the situation before it reached the point it did or has gotten. Also though, the players are getting in trouble for trying to end around their betting by tampering so they knew it was wrong from the start.

I wasn't that complicated as far as I know... As an NCAA official, I had to sign a form that says I agree to the NCAA Gambling policy. I am told (but have no proof) that it is the same ones the players had to sign.
The policy was, that if the NCAA sponsors a Championship in the sport, you are NOT allowed to place a wager on it at ANY level. Period. End of story. So even though I am a hockey official, I cannot play NFL Fantasy Football for money. Because the NCAA sponsors a championship in Football.
Now, I know several guys who officiate NCAA Hockey and played NFL Fantasy Football for money. Relatively speaking it was for small amounts of money amongst friends, so their thought is how are they ever going to find out, and get me in trouble. I didn't do it, because I would hate to not be able to be an NCAA Official from some trivial thing. All it takes is one person getting disgruntled and reporting you.
I say that all past tense because the gambling policy has been updated and I haven't taken them time to review it. But it seems these punishments are all coming down under the old policy, where it was forbidden - regardless of legal status. I really have little to no sympathy, but maybe that comes from my hatred of sports gambling in general.
I dislike sports gambling, and have always liked college sports more than professional, especially football. Most of my friends who gamble on sports and play hardcore fantasy football are insufferable to try and watch a game with. I dislike that there are hours long radio and TV programs devoted to fantasy football. I really think opening this up just creates more opportunities for problems where people are placing proxy bets through others, etc. NCAA is becoming more and more a business all the time (and has been for quite some time now), so I suppose this is just the next thing. I just feel like we are slowly losing the spirit of the games we play when everything becomes money on the line, and we have to review everything frame by frame to "make sure we get it right!" heaven forbid, I mean someone may have flinched we better make sure we caught that. Maybe it is just time for me to step away from it.
These are cool.

I think the ACC is preparing for when a certain few schools leave for greener (as in money) pastures.
CU vs TCU, aka The Deion Experiment...wtf?! Wow.

So, if we put those two numbers together... the "expected" score was going to be something like 52-3? Yes, I fully realize that the two bets are set independently, so it doesn't really work like that, but... wow.

Gee, that would be a shame. That upstart CU team getting beat by a team that just can't finish a game. Yeah, I'd weep about 2 tears.

Why?
My opinion, and my opinion only, is that Deion is treating college FB like the NFL. Granted, yeah, it's right up there, but...He's just shoving the model in the face of "amateur" athletics (heavy on the quotes).
And Deion is an a-hole in the first place, so F him.

Deion is doing nothing most coaches aren't doing he just is being open about it. It won't work long term but he won't be there long term so...
Screw Nebraska and their entitled fanbase. Dr. Tom was a cheater and exploited criminals to win.
Well 2023 Iowa is resembling 2022 Iowa in many ways except for QB1. The OL was inconsistent at pass blocking and awful at run blocking, which is why Iowa only racked up 118 yards rushing. It is embarrassing to only get 284 total yards of offense against a Mountain West team. They need to improve to help the running game but especially to keep Cade McNamara healthy to last the season.
Honestly the defense was not stellar at all, gave up 329 yards. The d-line and linebackers need to improve because transfer Jay Higgins and returner Cooper DeJean can't do it all.
It's hate week so screw the Cyclones. The Clones beat cross state rival UNI on Saturday but had their own issues. With the game in Ames the field tilts slightly in their favor. If the OL can give McNamara time and the WR/TE can limit their drops Iowa should win even with an anemic running game.

Patiently waiting to see how the red team "nebraska's" this game since I always want a heartbreaking loss for the cornpickers.
And it starts, they hit the motion man on the snap and on the next play doink it off the goalpost. ?

Nebraska can't get out of their own way, literally. Why they are trying to time the snap with a man in motion like that is beyond me. I don't know how they can keep Sims in the game, he's been a complete disaster.
