Rings pretty hollow to complain about goaltending when you score 1 goal. You're not going to win very many games in the NHL scoring one goal. I am not saying Fluery played well. Stopping 16 of 18 doesn't even qualify for a quality start. But it is hard to rip the goalies when you score 1 goal. You're expecting a shutout then, and even Gus "only" has 2 shutouts on the season.
The Wild are 7th in goals allowed, and 16th in goals scored. Depth scoring needs to return rather than relying on the top line and nobody else to score goals.
Winnipeg is the leading scoring team in the NHL. Wallstedt could get lit up tonight based on the way the team has played this last 5 games.
2-1 Loss to Utah (Zuccarello, Kaprizov primary assist)
6-1 Loss to Florida (Rossi, Kaprizov primary assist)
3-2 Loss to Vegas (Kaprizov x2)
4-1 WIN over Philadelphia (Kaprizov x2, Rossi, Boldy)
7-1 Loss to Edmonton (Gaudreau)
In the last 5 games, we have 3 goals that Kaprizov didn't score or assist on (and none in the last 3). In the If the other team can shut down, or limit the top line. Nobody on the Wild is going to do anything else to hurt you. Ryan Hartman hasn't scored a goal in over 20 games. I have only watched 2 games, so I don't know how he looks playing, but Trenin is a complete ghost on the score sheets.
The Wild are very much a one line team right now (especially with Ek out). That one line proved difficult to shut down, but teams might be figuring something our given results from the last 10 days.
Tuned in forgetting it was an earlier start today. Saw the score and immediately went back to football.
Freddy Gaudreau's goal in the first period of the game versus Edmonton is the last time the Wild scored a goal without Kaprizov being on the ice. Currently in their 17th period since then. That is absolutely pathetic.
I thought Trenin was signed as a "PK Specialist", he sure doesn't do much else. The PK is 30th in the NHL, he doesn't appear to be helping there either.
8 straight losses to the Jets. More than 2 years since they've beat the Jets.
I didn't think they were as good as their record from just several games ago, but my goodness I hope the same.can be said for their recent string of garbage play.

While the beginning of the season has been lots of fun to watch, Rand wrote about how much we are overperforming 5 on 5, and how terrible we are on PP and PK--and it looks like we are in for a hard regression to the mean (i.e. bubble team)...
This article gets into the scoring problems they're having. Without KK, the numbers are dismal. In the past 6 games the team is 1-5 and has 9 goals. Yuck. That's bad by Lemairian standards.
No #97 tonight.

What an OT winner from Faber!
So the Wild did better when we stopped watching and went to the world juniors game. 😂
If you watch Faber’s goal closely you can see the exact moment when Oettinger says “screw it, I have dinner reservations”.

I think he committed 100% to locking up the post thinking his teammate had Faber going around the net. Bad assumption. If you watch Faber’s goal closely you can see the exact moment when Oettinger says “screw it, I have dinner reservations”.
That was a strange game and a lesson that you just need to keep playing. Both of the Wild's 3rd period goals could have easily not gone in...but this time they did. They scored on their last three shots!
Spurgeon may have had his knee blown out after taking a slew foot and going feet first into the boards.

From the hockey news.
This guy is a real POS.
L'Heureux has a history of being a dirty player. He was suspended nine times in the Quebec Major Junior League, including 10 games for jamming his stick between panes of glass and jabbing a 16-year-old kid. According to Michael Russo's tweet. He also was suspended twice in the AHL.

Please tell me someone on the Wild went after him.

You can see trenin launch at him right at the end of the video above. Didn’t see the game but would assume it led to more given he was penalized

That looked like a season ender. Spurgeon isn't the most durable player, but anyone gets hurt on that play. I feel sorry for the guy.
I remember Lindberg's injury as a Gopher was similar. The underside of the blade goes straight into the lower boards where there's little give. That's usually a knee or ankle and a bad injury.
The meathead who did it should be banned from the league, but the NHL has a history of hand slaps.

Wow, that's almost like 180 minutes! 😮
Update on Spurgeon.

He averages 11.5 minutes of ice time per game so he will miss 34.5 minutes of ice time.
Spurgeon averages 20:42 of ice time per game so after two games he will already have missed more ice time.
Way to crack down NHL. 🙄
Wild somehow scratch another two points. Ek being back helps.

Im not big at all on intentionally injuring a player… it’s the NHL, not some bush league in Canada. Though I’ll have no problem if the Wild calling up some goons from Iowa and thump some ears when they play in Nashville on the 18th.
Keep your stick on the ice...
Very methodical 4-0 win against the Hurricanes. 15-3-3 on the road now.
Gus gets hurt team loses 4 games in a row. Gus comes back team wins 5 of 6 games.
Gus for MVP!!!!
Middleton returns.

Amazing how terrible these guys are in St. Paul.

Gave up 3 goals in 4 minutes. Running around swatting at pucks letting Blues dictate play. Wild scored 2 goals on first 3 shots and stopped playing.
And now Faber could be injured...
said on tv he’s not coming back tonight with an upper body injury. 🙁

Surprised to hear upper body. Wondering if he took a stick somewhere.
This team can't stay healthy.
When he goes into the corner for the puck, it looks like he might take Buchnevich's shoulder in the face. And now Faber could be injured...

Okay I think I’ve figured it out. Don’t score again to go up two unless it is an empty-netter.
Impressive stamina from that group of five at the end. Nearly three minute shift.
Hynes had a time out to burn I thought. I was wondering what he was saving it for.

New evidence points to this hit on Faber. So it may be a possible concussion.

They really need to move on from Brodin and Spurgeon asap.
They really need to move on from Brodin and Spurgeon asap.
every time I say this to my friends they get all pissy and say Brodin is a great player/contract and there’s no way someone could name 8-10 defensemen they’d rather have than him at that price point.
glad to see someone else agrees.
spurgeon is even rougher
Another game against the Avalanche, another big steaming L.
Real hard to take this team seriously when there are something like 2-23 against the Avalanche, Stars, and Jets.
Lost 7 of last 8 to Colorado. Lost 8 of last 9 to Dallas. Lost 8 in a row to Jets.
B-R-U-T-A-L
I wonder which of the three is going to get the first round bye vs the Wild...

I can't completely disagree but tough to judge them after a game against one of the more talented offenses while missing three of your 4 top D and your only superstar who can balance out their stars a little. And it isn't like they always fail miserably against every good team. Seemed in control in Washington and Carolina, even with some top players injured. (And when you hand them a couple goals to start.....) I thought in the first Jets game they were the better team other than how the score ended. They did not play anywhere near the controlled defensive game last night that they are capable of playing. And I don't think it was all because the Avs wouldn't let them. I wouldn't bet on them in the first round, but if they actually had all their D healthy and top few lines going into the playoffs, I wouldn't automatically expect a first round exit either.
@koho But thats kind of the thing, when was the last time this team was actually healthy? I can just about promise we will be missing a key player come playoff time.
While they have beat some of the good teams. They continue to get beat, and frequently embarrassed, but teams at the top of their division. For the last couple of seasons that has been the case.
I don't like what Guerin has done with the team/roster. And I was mocked, all in good fun, at the beginning of the season with the #fireGuerin notes while they were winning games. But seriously, the roster moves he has made... how do you stand behind them?
What does Trenin actually bring to this team? How about Foligno (long-term)? Hartman (long term)? Why was Johansson re-signed? Gaudreau at $2.1M is somewhat hard to argue with, but I still think he could.
At one point, we had the #1 prospect pool. But Guerin kept locking up these older, depth players on long term deals and we couldn't bring anyone up. Now what? We have ZERO depth to overcome injuries and have guys like Shore getting regular NHL shifts. A highly regarded prospect like Ohgren gets called up, and they give him 6 minutes of ice time with guys like Johannson, Trenin, etc. Its pretty difficult to drive play with those anchors on your line. We put them in roles (3rd and 4th line) that don't matchup with what we expect them to do. Now there are top 6 openings where we could give them a look, and instead, they shove these older, slow, bottom 6 players into those positions. I don't get it.
We were supposed to have GRIT and toughness... The 4 or so games I have watched, that element of their game is not evident. Trenin was supposed to help the PK... it still sucks (29th I believe). The guy who elbows Faber... well Foligno went and asked him and he said he didn't do it. So foligno left him alone. Well great, what exactly is your role on the team Foligno? It sure isn't scoring goals.
Sorry, I cannot watch many games, and it is extremely frustrating to follow from a far. I am just left scratching my head at a lot of what is going on. We have $14M in dead cap hit from Parise and Suter, and another $14M+ tied up in guys who should probably be making less than half that combined, many for multiple years.
McDavid elbows Johansson in the head, no call of course. Then, the dipshits on TNT basically say “Yuk yuk, ah well what can ya do?!”
It will be interesting to see how that shakes out, because that's an obvious suspension.McDavid elbows Johansson in the head, no call of course. Then, the dipshits on TNT basically say “Yuk yuk, ah well what can ya do?!”
@j22 That is a rhetorical question... right? I am pretty sure you already know nothing is going to happen.
