How does this affect the cap? Does his cap hit come off the books while he is out?
How does this affect the cap? Does his cap hit come off the books while he is out?
It will depend on how long he is out and what IR list he would be placed on. I believe with LTIR you must be out 10 games and 24 days. Regular IR rules say he must be out 7 DAYS.
Does IR count against salary cap NHL?The main function of IR is to allow a team to call up a replacement player by making room on the active roster for him, it's got nothing to do with the salary cap. Players on IR do not count towards the 23-man limit, but their cap hits do count. When a player is designated as LTIR, their salary cap hit is temporarily excluded from the team's overall salary cap calculation. This provides the team with additional flexibility to make roster moves or sign new players to replace the injured player.

Hartman gets extended as well. I mean he hasn't extended 33 year old journeyman Marcus Johansson, or 35 year old Pat Maroon yet. Maybe Goligoski wants another couple years, we should probably look at extending him to. That way we can keep the exact same roster next year. Better call MAF too. Why would we want to change anything on a team that does so well in the playoffs?
This "awesome" prospect pool we have, and there is NO room for them. Hope they like 3rd and 4th line minutes. Then we will all complain when they don't produce because their linemates are WAY past their prime.

If they can get 40+ saves a night from Gustavsson they should be tough to beat.

Might as well try Addison and Goligoski at forward, they sure as hell can't play defense.
Wild ran into a team with even less discipline than them, which honestly impressed me more than the 5-2 win.
5 special teams goals and 2 of those short-handed ?.
Both SHG were on the same PK. How embarrassing for MTL?5 special teams goals and 2 of those short-handed ?.
Fire Guerin. whoops wrong side. Fire Kent Hughes ?

In the last 25 years, Wild along with 6 other teams…
PHX - Never
CLB - Never (Expansion with Mn. in 2000)
NYI - 1984
SEA - Never (Expansion 2 years ago)
TOR - 1967 (56 years, probably longer than majority of their fanbase age)
WPG - Never

Love to see Sammy get called up, but they replace a D with a F?

Boldy is also out, but not on IR. So they only had 11 forwards against Montreal. Mermis was called up earlier to play on defense. So now they can play 12 & 6.

At what point will this start to free up cap space? Or doesn't it?

Per Russo's article in the Athletic--
The Wild will not accrue daily cap space until Goligoski comes off LTIR. When he does, the Wild must become cap-compliant. But by putting him on LTIR, they have more roster flexibility. Placing Goligoski on LTIR took them from having roughly $51,000 in cap space to $1.95 million in cap space. It also means that Goligoski must miss a minimum of 10 games and 24 days. Now that they’re in LTIR, a player’s bonuses count toward the cap hit, not just his salary. This gives the Wild $1.07 million worth of cap space left if needed, according to Puckpedia. The Wild had the option to call up Walker on an emergency basis after playing Tuesday’s game short one forward but opted to go the LTIR route instead

Oddly written. The Wild went from $51K in cap space to $1.95M in cap space.... Then he says they have $1.07M in caps space left....
He is talking about 2 player. Does he mean that most of Goligoski's $2M cap hit won't count because he is LTIR and will miss 10 games? It isn't pro rated? And then Russo says the cap space is 1.07M. Is that because Walkers cap hit is $880K (with bonus)?
It seems odd that the cap hit is a players season long cap hit even though they only have to miss 24 days/10 games.
The basics of the deal are that Goligoski's cap hit goes away while he's on LTIR. The Wild went from basically no space to $2M with that move. Calling up Walker drops it to around $1M.

But for those of us who don't aspire to be NHL GM's, isn't there a difference between current cap space and what is available at the trade deadline? So If the team cap is $82 million (for ease of explaining) and there are 82 games, a teams cumulative salary prorated per game is $1 million/game. If a player is injured for 20 games and is put on the IR, and he was getting paid $8.2 million/yr ($100,000/gm) when he comes off IR has the team accrued $2 million in cap space (minus whatever they spent on a replacement).? Isn't there something like this? Isn't it how some teams like Tampa got around caps in the past when they had LTIR? I don't follow it closely enough, but thought some mechanism like this was how the Wild were able to pick up the players late last year?
- The cap is calculated daily. Everyday that you spend under the cap, you accrue cap space. That's why teams can add significant players at the trade deadline.
- Players on regular IR still count against the cap(ie Spurgeon) players on LTIR (Goligoski) do not count against the cap, but you cannot use LTIR to accrue cap space. Meaning the $1M-ish in cap space that the Wild have is not going to increase until Goligoski gets off if LTIR.
Where teams can take advantage of LTIR is when the player isn't going to return to the team until the playoffs start, or later. If Goligoski and/or Spurgeon were going to miss the rest of the season, then the Wild could spend their cap hits on replacement players

54 shots / 91 attempts by Columbus.
Another ugly performance by the Wild last night. Defense is soft and sagging. Offense looks slow and over passes.

Hartman's third gives the Wild a nice cushion with four left.

At what point do they give the Edmonton bench an abacus to help with their line changes?
Thankfully the Oilers were their opponent. Love the offense (especially the sick Ek goal) but good Lord the defense/goaltending is bad. Gus would like to have the at least the 2nd EDM goal back if not more.
The captain will be out a bit longer. He must miss at least 10 games and 24 days. He has already missed 6 games. Also, Freddy Gaudreau is out.

Is there really no way to watch the game tonight? Seems weird.
Should have known. Literally the only way I can’t see it.
Wild lose 6-2 to flyers
Thankfully I didn’t watch this game.. one minnesota team collapsing was plenty.
I haven't really been able to follow the Wild closely yet this year. It seems like we either win by a lot or lose by a lot. Seems un-Wild-like.
