Holy shart what a play by Donnie Barrels!
That felt good to watch!

TWINS WIN!!!! TWINS WIN!!!!
When is the Parade?
The Twins are undefeated in the playoffs over the last 1,099 days. ?
Let's not. ?

Don’t let the Twins get hot
Granted I am nowhere near an MLB player. And the strike zone has been all over today... but how do you watch that pitch?
The reason hitters strike out looking on good pitches and strike out swinging on bad pitches is because of how much pitches can move. Seeing overlays of multiple pitching in a single bat looking identical the first half way to the plate and then ending up in way different locations when it crosses the plate is amazing. Hitters who are great are truly amazing.
Did they briefly show the ump checking Jax's glove and hat?
That's been a SOP for a couple seasons, if I recall correctly.
Correct, since they announced they are cracking down on foreign substances increasing spin rate. Unless you are a Yankees pitcher in Yankee Stadium, of course.
In the ump's defense it's hard to hang on to a slippery glove.

Thanks, I don't watch a ton of baseball anymore (lost Ballys).
I was a decent catcher, and not a very good batter. But my dad always hammer into me never to strike out looking, especially with 2 outs and RISP. So I get frustrated when I see it. But that was HS club ball, nowhere near MLB. It's quite a bit different. Just hard to remove the lessons that were drilled into my psyche.

How many innings will Luis Arraez pitch for the Marlins tonight? ?
Trading for Pablo = Ending the playoff losing streak
I miss Arraez (he was a lot of fun to watch) but you need pitching to win in the playoffs.
A couple of moves the Twins made (that were heavily criticized) have worked out alright. When you draft a high schooler you have to be patient. Royce is pretty good as a 24 year old rookie. To come back from two separate ACL injuries and do what he has done this season is so cool.

IMO Lewis making a statement early in the game was HUGE. Playoff pressure when dealing with a historical losing streak tends to lead to negative vibes but Royce and Pablo said not today!!! Polanco makes an error on the lead off hitter of the game. What happens if the Blue Jays score first? Pablo said not on my watch.
Someone with better skills at googling check me:
I think the Detroit Pistons now have the longest active playoff losing streak at 14 games.

Correa's amazing play to save a run early was huge, too. A run there could have started a downward spiral.

I agree.
Correa has had a down year hitting likely the foot injury is a bigger factor then we know. He has continued to play resulting in having the most at bats on the team by a large margin. Hopefully his injuries don't linger so we can get more offense from him in the coming seasons. His defense is definitely a weapon and he showed that on that play.
The bullpen (Varland, Thielbar, Jax, and Duran) were on their game 3 and 1/3 shut innings giving up only one hit.

I was also taught the "protect with 2" approach growing up but it's significantly easier to do when you're younger than it is at the major league level. Especially against a guy like Jordan Hicks, who throws 102-103mph with 17 inches of arm-side run and has a slider with 12-14" of glove-side break. Castro likely laid off on the pitch cuz he read fastball out of his hand which would have sent that pitch a foot outside. But Hicks dropped that backdoor slider on the outside corner and Castro had no chance.

His arm alone is ridiculously strong but the play he made when he made it and how he made it? You could argue that saved the game. Stems the momentum from Bichette making a great heads up play by making a heads up play of his own to get us off the field with the shutout in tact.
This view from behind the plate just makes the play all that more impressive when you see how far away he was when the ball got by Polanco. To make a throw like that, which I can assume he's probably never practiced at that angle (he obviously has practiced charging and making the throw to 1B etc but running straight through the baseline and throwing him like that I can't imagine is a play they work on...ever?)

From a pure instinct, great athlete, perspective Correa's play was very "what the hell is Jeter doing there holy crap he got him out at the plate" like. My God Correa went a long damn way to just get the ball. As good an infield play as I've ever seen.

It's funny you should mention Jeter when I saw Correa make this play the Jeter play was what I immediately thought of.
When Correa was five years old and started playing on a team he was a first base men. Thankfully he was moved to SS/pitcher when he got older. I doubt he would have been able to make this play from first base. ?

He's blackout drunk, but credit to him for not cussing. 😀 He *wanted* to, then checked himself, lol.
When you tell somebody somethin', it depends on what part of the United States you're standin' in... as to just how dumb you are.
They showed the play from behind the plate during the game and I could not believe how much ground Correa had to cover to reach the ball in time. Now knowing that the runner going to 2nd was going to be covered he should have been closer when it got through, but he more than made up for it.
I agree.

Anyone who's ever played the sport knows just how insane that throw was. That was so split-second that if he gets to the ball a hair late, throws the ball a few inches off line, or throws it any slower, it's probably not an out at home. It's so hard to barehand the ball, and, without setting your feet, hit a target while you're still running sideways. It was a pro-elite throw.
I love the way Jeffers had his mask up and when he saw that Correa might actually get to the ball, he calmly dropped his mask and lined up for a tag. Credit it to him for digging out a nasty little short hop and making the tag. The catcher might be the one guy on the team who makes that scoop routinely.
Well this is certainly high praise!

I’m going to target field today for my first playoff game. Do they hand out the homer hanky's!? Or do you purchase them?
- thanks

Gray not looking all that sharp so far. 2 H in the 1st, now a H and BB so far in the 2nd.
Phew - Gray gets out of another jam.
Berrios looks to have good stuff today. We are not having quality at bats so far.
Whoa...Toronto manager takes Berrios out early. Dude was dealing.
This may work out but seems like a huge panic move to me.

It is better than nothing, but I’d like to get more than 2 there after their manager panicked.

I texted my brother and a couple baseball buddies "I understand WHY they are doing it (lefties coming up and they need this game to stay alive), but I hate taking Berrios out so much for Toronto."
He was absolutely dealing. The Twins hitters looked relieved to see him leave.
C4 gets a bases loaded single to break up the tie but Castro hits into a double play with the bases loaded (scoring a run) to kill the rally. 2-0 Twins going to the 5th.

Sounds like it was a strategy from before the game. Didn’t adjust to how well Berrios was pitching.

Sometimes you need to look up from your computer and notice that, you know, that guy has his A game today.

Another 2 base runner inning. gggggg
Out there…OUT THERE!
Bases loaded then a (really) loud strike before the Twins twist a nice little 6-4-3 to kill the rally.

I really want to go back and watch the pitch before this to see who triggered this timing play. Usually there's some type of signal between the SS, P, and C saying "Hey we can get this guy, he's not paying attention" and my gut says Carlos indicated that to Sonny who indicated that to Jeffers. Then Jeffers watched Correa and made whatever the motion is to start Gray's timer and he went 1-2-spin and caught Vlad flatfooted. It almost looked like they were running it through the PitchCom.
Fantastic play.
Can’t help but feel like two runs aren’t going to get it done.
After the break Alex did a nice job breaking down the play. From memory I think Sonny (?) taking off his hat was the indictor and Correa acknowledged with the same gesture. Then it was a timing play.
EDIT: Found it.

I don't get to watch many games anymore due to the Bally's garbage, but it so funny watching so many of our pitchers throw so much gas after so many years of pitch-to-contact
Edit: I just used 'so' 4 times in a sentence... smh

I was talking to my brother about this too. He said it's one benefit that teams have with the pitchclock being right behind the plate. They can set up plays in practice where they signal it (like Gray and Correa) and they'll have practiced it so "When we signal it this way, we break on 4" or whatever. So Correa sees the clock hit 5 and takes a step, then makes a break for it and Gray spins as soon as it hits 4 and Vlad is too late to diagnose it.
In the olden days it was usually timed by the catcher (dropping his glove, tapping his knee, whatever) and the runner would see it the same time as the pitcher. When it can be done by a clock? The runner has no way to know.
First and second, 2 outs in the 7th for Royce Lewis.
Toronto brings in their closer to pitch to him. Does Lewis have another big hit in him?
Cool info, thanks!
