time to make some changes. The sections tournaments have seen changes over the years no reason this one needs special treatment. Stillwater, St. Thomas are examples of schools just as close to Rochester as Lakeville.
It's been long debated and discussed about 1AA. The section has long been a door mat, with a very small handful of good teams winning that section. Over the years, I've heard it's Rochester schools behind the push of no change. Surprising it's more Rochester schools over the 2 Lakeville schools. Though over the years I've said a school like STA, Rosemount, Eastview, Apple Valley, Burnsville (when they had an independent program) and you mentioned Stillwater would add to Sec. 1AA and give more of a challenge to the 2 Lakeville schools dominating.
I’m shared this before, but it’s still one of my favorite stories leading into the Boy’s State Hockey Tourney…
State Tournaments always bring out the best in fans and student bodies. Though I still remember several years ago when a certain school won their section in Boys Hockey to go to the State Tourney. The band director got excited about going and bringing the band. The Hockey Coach told him that the band can stay home… Because the band never once showed up all season for a regular season game so why would they show up now for the State Hockey Tourney. And I say good for him!!!
@gator First thought in my head after reading this was Rosen sports Sunday all of a sudden covering gopher hockey after winning the championship against Maine.
I remember in the late 1970’s John Lennon had a concert to be played in St.Paul after the state Hockey tournament they interviewed him at the tournament and asked him what he thought of the tournament and he said it was amazing he could not believe what he was seeing 😎
Hill-Murray girls team has Emily Pohl with 40 goals this season, she is only in 10th grade she has great family background her father John Pohl, her mother Kristy Wendell is assistant coach 😎
Rumors floating around of Hermantown moving the city to Wisconsin looking for a level of hockey they can fairly compete at. Hermantown mayor heard saying “Hermantown is not a place, it’s a people”
Sec. 1 Championship: #2 Lakeville North vs. #1 Lakeville South... not a shocker, though I was pulling for Farmington and a certain defenseman.
Sec. 2 Championship: #4 Holy Family vs. #2 Shakopee... one will be a first-time participant at State.
Sec. 3 Quarterfinals: #5 Two Rivers vs. #1 St. Thomas & #3 Rosemount vs. #2 Cretin-Derham Hall
Sec. 4 Quarterfinals: #5 Roseville vs. #1 Hill-Murray & #3 White Bear Lake vs. #2 Stillwater
Sec. 5 Championship: #3 Champlin vs. #1 Rogers... As I mentioned last night, 5AA will either be a first timer at state (Rogers) or Champlin who has one appearance back in 1995.
That's a lot of crazy in a way. Two Rivers? Never heard of them. HF or Shakopee guaranteed 1st time. Rogers possible first timer, I can't imagine Rock Ridge has been, and I know Bemidji has been but not often.
I just learned last night from a friend that graduated from Henry Sibley HS is that it was renamed to Two Rivers in 2021. I had no idea they changed names.

Patrick Henry switched to Camden High School last year.
Anyone have a link or know when tickets go on sale for the section finals this week? Looking for both the 6AA at Ridder on Wednesday and the 2AA at Braemar on Thursday. I did my usual digging through school social sites and cannot find anything.
Sec. 7AA… #1 seed is Rock Ridge (Rock Ridge, Mountain Iron-Buhl, Mesabi East & Cherry) coached by UMD alum Matt Niskanen plays the winner of #9 Anoka vs. #8 Duluth East. Two programs who have hockey success and State Championships that have fallen to coaching changes and other upcoming programs near them.

What use to be a not so hard ticket to get for both 2AA and 6AA, cause of it being a double header at Mariucci... just became a very hard ticket to get. I can understand your asking and wish you success!!!

I use to and still get Henry Sibley/Two Rivers (especially when it went by Sibley) and Simley mixed up... and they are only 7 miles apart... lol!!!
Delighted for Hibbing. 👍 Also especially sweet for Hibbing beating those Sand-Bagging Frauds from Hermantown who should have opted up to AA a decade ago. It’s not their players fault, it’s Hermantown’s spineless, greedy school administrators! Screw um!

Yep... I like how Roseau looks at it. Rather go to State once every 10 years in AA, than 7-8 times every 10 years in A.

And Rock Ridge is a newer HS comprising of Eveleth and Virginia. Bummer there wasn't a way to incorporate their names, so much history going all the way back.
Hope they can get past Andover but it will be a tough one for them. Andover had the 11th toughest schedule in the State with a 14-13 record. Rock Ridge had the 48th toughest schedule.

correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure students get first crack at tickets and they go fast. I’m always interested in a section 2 title game but I kinda just gave up on it.

Those tickets won't even get to the public. Both Wayzata and Edina will buy them up. The only question how many will turn their tickets to scalping. Trying to remember what section championship sold out and people were scalping their tickets outside.

Wasn’t tonka and channhassen the big one last year?

Yes that was the big one last year. I was able to go to Chan vs. Shakopee semis, but it felt like the tickets to the finals were gone before anyone outside of the school walls had a chance to buy. Makes sense, it's just frustrating as a fan who wants to see some good games. I'm sure the Edina and Wayzata game will be the same. Braemar has 2,300 seats while Ridder has 3,400. Maybe there's a chance some become available. My hope for the 2AA is that Holy Family doesn't have that big of a student/parent base so some of their tickets become available.
The broadcast of the 7A semifinals from Amsoil was great. Better than some of the Gopher game streams. Actually some of the little schools up north are playing section games in better venues than the metro teams. Too bad they can't come close to filling them.
Hibbing vs Cloquet Wednesday night should be a barn burner.
Ridder is an excellent venue for a HS hockey game. & Getting into Ridder should be doable for a singe game format. It holds 1k more than Braemar.
Holding section finals at Big needs to be done & appears it is. Braemar works alright for section 3AA with STA & Cretin making it often right now, they don't draw as much as some of the bigger cities. But I would move this one to Ridder as well.
I shouldn't have used the word better. Nicer newer fancier talking about the Little Ralph and Amsoil. The Little Ralph is amazing, makes Ridder look like Fryberger. Ridder would be awesome and of course Braemar but really any arena that you can get close to filling is great.
Hermantown's schedule doesn't come close to that. I am sure the other top AA teams have similarly difficult schedules.
@slap-shot , While last year was 18th, this year is 9th. So yes, not the toughest schedule, but tougher than majority of AA teams this year. Too bad they don't case that sch. in AA.
