I don't think a team using their timeout less than 2:30 in was on the championship game bingo card.
The Stillwater D are way to slow to cover the Moorhead forwards, it’s GLARING! Simple as that, Conway hasn’t played poorly, they are getting great scoring chances on him! 5-1 after one period.
If you let Moorhead start rolling, they have the skill when they’re playing loose & confident to BLOW you off the ice. They might score 9 tonight…
There was 5 Cullen’s on last years Moorhead’s Bantam AA State Championship team. Some towns… last names never seem to go away.

Conway with a series of great saves! Looked like a pinball machine that MH power play
All of a sudden, it's 5-3.
Stillwater goalie is struggling (not that he's getting a ton of help either).
All of a sudden, it's 5-3.
And before the pa announcer can finish announcing Stillwater’s goal… Moorhead scores… 6-3

Go little horsies! Cheering for a friend. 😄
Stillwater's gap control is god awful. They've given Moorhead way too much space. It also seems like the goaltender keeps getting beat on the same place (low glove side).
HARD DISAGREE Trix! Moorhead would already have scored 10 goals on an average goalie! The quality of chances MH has had through 2 periods has been absurd. lolStillwater goalie is struggling (not that he's getting a ton of help either).
Conway has given up more goals tonight, 7. Then he did in his 8 previous games, 6, when he became eligible again.

7-6. 3:20 left.
Lot of Spuds players with dry hair during the medal awarding. Must have shortened that bench quite a bit.
But hey in the end it worked and great for them to finally get their first!
Incredibly fun game to watch. Gotta give Stillwater credit; they hung in there and kept plugging right until the end. Very happy for Moorhead; 9th time was the charm.

Saw several dry hair players from EGF this afternoon as well.

On the drive home listening to the radio, it was mentioned it was the first time section 8 swept A & AA. Surprised me a bit… I know there’s been northern sweeps, but had to be a combo of section 7 and 8.

I had neither a horse nor tater tot in the race so for me it was a super fun game to watch.
Stillwater players continued to linger on the ice long, long, time after the trophy presentation. Not sure I've ever seen almost an entire team stay on the ice that long after losing a game.

I noticed that more this year, more after the second games of each session, the losing team, players staying on ice longer.

Edina's scoring drops off after their first 5 or 6 top guys. Credit to Giles because I think he took that team past their expectations.
Aside from transfers, do programs like that refill with guys from JV, Bantams, a little bit of each? I know Edina's Bantam team made the state tournament. Tonka which had an expected down year, also sent their Bantam team to state and their JV team went undefeated.
Aloha!
A grown man is wearing a Mr. Potato Head Halloween costume in the Moorhead section… lol!!!

I’m 99.9% positive it’s Edina faulty. I sit in 106 and they were talking, participating with the student body. And had Edina gear on under the safety green coats.

Does anyone know what the attendance for the class A championship was? The mshl box score we found said 0. 😬

I mean, he got the record for wins (broke the tie with Grosso) and got Northern Lakes to State in the process. A win-win IMO. But I doubt he wants to live up there in the winter with Grandkids in TC

I've looked everywhere I can think of and find and nothing. They would've announced it during the 3rd period of the game. Even when you look at the box score for the AA game, it has attendance at 0.

He still lives in Duluth and whatever travel back and forth can be long. It's around 100 miles between Crosby and Duluth. Plus, they have late night practices at Northern Lakes to get players from all 3 schools to the rink. He's 73, married, a litter of grandchildren, very well could've decided enough is enough.

I’ll believe Roseau moving from AA to A and Alex from A to AA when I see it.

@gator Roseau Bantams and PeeWees are only playing A now, so, I think there are some legs attached to this. But, I also will believe it when I see it.
Did I miss the hockey hair video? Or did he stop making one?
Are the TV ratings for the prep championships ever released? I'm think specifically of Prep Bowl, and championship games for hockey and basketball.

I'll trust you when it comes to 21 & 22, but 7 is Peckham & he sees ice time. He actually was the one that got the penalty that led to the winning PP goal for Moorhead. Maybe you meant 17....I dunno.
Youre right because he was crying flat on the ice afterwards and I felt terrible for him.We sat behind the Edina bench last night and numbers 7, 21, and 22 never saw the ice not did they look like they were ever considered.

Looking back at my photos it was 17, not 7
I’ll believe Roseau moving from AA to A and Alex from A to AA when I see it.
All the counts are in just waiting on some of these petitions.
-Of course Roseau can play in class A if they choose to. If they are in 8A then Detroit Lakes can move to 6A. They've wanted that for years.
-Sartell AA petition to A makes me laugh. Who do they think they are wanting to be in a section with hockey powerhouses like Prairie Centre, Wadena, Fergus Falls and Breckenridge-Wahpeton.
-I don't know why you say that about Alexandria. Their schools have been growing consistently for years. I believe 2023 count they were just a handfull of students from being forced to AA.
-Spehar is worried about a section having 7 teams? 7 is a great number although you won't a have tantalizing 1 vs 8 game. There are hockey sections with 4 teams now.

I'm pretty sure Alex was AA moved down to A and has opportunities to go back to AA and haven't.

What section or sections only have 4 teams. No AA section does...

That's why I always like Roseau... they are a small school that plays up. Not that I'll stop liking them if they make the Tourney. Though if they drop down to A, it'll take away the David vs. Goliaths at the Tourney.

According to MSHSL documents, Alex has 1204 enrollment, and the cutoff is 1188. Smallest AA schools are New Prague (1234), Alex (1204), then St. Louis Park (1188).
Hastings (1177) and Monticello (1177) along with Sartell (1173) and Sauk Rapids (1163) are your largest class A schools.
We are now in the appeals period, where schools having over 50% Free and Reduced Price Lunch OR are within 10% of the cutoff could appeal to be placed from AA to A.
I know New Prague did not apply to get moved to class A since the appeal is very likely not to be successful. St. Louis Park might have a sporting chance, but I cannot imagine Alex would be successful either. Chanhassen, Waconia, and Owatonna are also eligible to appeal because they are in the bottom 10% of schools in class AA, but I would be shocked if their appeals would be successful.
Minneapolis has successfully appealed down in the past, and I wouldn't be surprised if the new St. Paul co-op is granted an appeal to play Class A as well.
Once the appeals are done, then sectioning starts.
Section 1AA had 8 teams originally, but the co-op between JM and Century took one school away. It will be interesting if they do balance out the section, as the logical opportunities could include Prior Lake, Eastview or Rosemount now that Hastings is class A.
Update: Jess Myers reporting that Roseau is not seeking to move down to Class A this cycle.
@skiumahlaw or even @eric-vegoe
A team like Apple Valley/Burnsville… how do they determine their student enrollment.
And for what I understand from more than a couple sources… Apple Valley can support its own program. Burnsville is unable. And it’s why they play majority of their home games at AVHS and they play in AV uniforms. Though Burnsville imo has one of the coolest rinks in the state.

Enrollments are taken from the October student count submitted to MDE, then reduced by 40% of the students receiving Free and Reduced Price Lunch from that same count.
Since lunch is now free across the state, students on Medicaid programs are automatically in that FRPL figure, as well as those that submit applications and qualify conventionally (needed for other fee waivers often in schools). In practice the FPRL numbers are always undercounted, but the change to free lunch across the state has not shifted the numbers significantly in either direction.
For cooperative programs, the MSHSL will take the largest school in the coop's enrollment plus one half the enrollment of all other schools in the cooperative. For AV/Burnsville, you have Burnsville (1626) and Apple Valley (1636), so you have 1636+813 = 2449. Since both schools are already over the AA cutoff line, the cooperative is also AA.

You'll still have that in a way, with Roseau enrollment about 300 playing Mahtomedi or Sartell, etc. 😀
Grand Rapids has played up every single season, right? I don't believe they've ever played in an A section even though they could.

Girls 6A has 4, what a joke and very close to having 3 this past season. Girls 1A has 5.
