Said it was a fair catch, MN D gets INT. In other news, MN just gave PJ a 7 year extension. 😉

Boo-hoo Iowa… Iowa fans need to learn the rules of football… I was saying that the whole time he returned the football he waved people off.

FLOYD IS COMING HOME!!!!

The Gophers now have the Pig and the Ax winning both on the road.

The Defense gets 3 turnovers and holds Iowa to 8 first downs/127 yards.

This should be a 15 on the fans

I'd assume they'd have to have given some kind of warning for that first.

Iowa punt returner was called for Invalid Fair Catch, ball is dead at the point of recovery.

He was waving his guys away but only using 1 hand to do it while pointing at the ball with the other hand, which by rule is an invalid fair catch signal. Had he used both arms to wave guys away it's a clean play but he was only using 1 arm to wave.

Not the type of mistake you'd expect out of a guy as good as DeJean but fortunately he made it there because the four Gophers he deked out of their pants on the sidelines were going to be destroyed for letting him get up the sidelines.

I only listened to the last 5 minutes (which took a half an hour because every play was reviewed I swear!) but it sounded like Grimm said they did warn them after the players were forced to leave the bench.  JG was friggin livid about it because it was full bottles and cans.

To tell you how long ago it was that the Gophs won in IC...I was a freshmen and the basketball team had yet to be on probation.

Whoever told Athan to throw the ball...yeah they need to make a generous donation to the alumni scholarship fund.  One of the dumbest moves you could make and it should have burned us.

But I will take an crappy win over a well played loss.  Last year we should have friggin crushed them...

Nubin interviewed after the game was in tears and said he would be lying if he didn't admit part of the reason he came back was for this game.

It makes it so damn sweet that this ended Iowa's CFP hopes and I wouldn't be surprised if it out the final nail in ferenetz's tenure (it probably won't but a gal can dream)

Pound sand Star Trib… There was nothing controversial about it. I was calling fair catch at first and he picked it up and ran.

I mean back in the day that was just called a fair catch and dead ball.  They changed the wording of the rule but what he was doing was often called a "Fair Catch Signal" in the pros and college.

The Strib is right that it was controversial but it was the right call.

The play where the Iowa player caught the ball but it might have hit the ground (that was reviewed) what did it look like on TV.  Obviously our homers thought it was incomplete...

As for Ferentz...I think one of them is dead.

Then I guess any big play that has significant impact on the game can be called controversial. Regardless of the penalty according to you and the Star Trib. The Trib has always had an axe to grind with Gopher athletics. And wants the "U" to fail.

20 years ago, he would have gotten away with it. Though players always look for a reason to get an edge on the rules. So the rules committee has to make rules 'black and white' so there's no controversy.

As for Ferentz...I think one of them is dead.

The long one down the sidelines that lead to Iowa's FG sure looked incomplete live but the refs called it a catch on the field, and then somehow all of NBC's cameras were from behind the WR so we couldn't actually see whether the WR lost control of the ball (despite replays showing him repositioning the ball as he rolls over-watch his left arm trying as he rolls over and starts to get to a knee).

https://twitter.com/B1Gfootball/status/1715816575213699332?s=20

The one late in the game is here:

https://twitter.com/B1Gfootball/status/1715864436722819543?s=20

Initially he has his right hand under the ball but moves it to the side as he makes contact with it and the ball pretty obviously touches the ground and seems to roll as he is bringing it in. It's one of the "called it a catch, leave it a catch" plays IMO. If it had been called incomplete they probably leave it incomplete.

It's only controversial because it happened at a pivotal moment. It is literally written plain as day in the rulebook. Dejean was clearly waving his left arm while running toward the ball (he claimed in the postgame it was to "keep his balance while running" as though he covers WRs while flailing his arms around).

SECTION 8. Fair Catch
Fair Catch
ARTICLE 1. a. A fair catch of a scrimmage kick is a catch beyond the neutral
zone by a Team B player who has made a valid signal during a scrimmage kick
that is untouched beyond the neutral zone.

b. A fair catch of a free kick is a catch by a Team B player who has made a
valid signal during an untouched free kick.
c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the
opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of
the catch or recovery. If the catch precedes the signal, the ball is dead when
the signal is first given.
d. If the receiver shades their eyes from the sun without waving their hand(s),
the ball is live and may be advanced.
Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has
obviously signaled their intention by extending one hand only clearly above
their head and waving that hand from side to side of their body more than
once.
Invalid Signal
ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:
a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above); or
b. That is given after a scrimmage kick is caught beyond the neutral zone,
strikes the ground or touches another player beyond the neutral zone (A.R.
6-5-3-III-V); or
c. That is given after a free kick is caught, strikes the ground or touches
another player. [Exception: Rule 6-4-1-f]

the rule is literally "any waving motion"

so waving off your own guys and yelling Peter Peter Peter is a fair catch signal. It's 100% the right call as it's written.

dx that's the definition of an "invalid signal" meaning it doesn't qualify as a valid fair catch motion.

No mention of a penalty, but if you read the rules in this order:

1: ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:
a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above)

2: ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has
obviously signaled their intention by extending one hand only clearly above
their head
and waving that hand from side to side of their body more than
once.

3: c. A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the
opportunity to advance the ball. The ball is declared dead at the spot of
the catch or recovery. If the catch precedes the signal, the ball is dead when
the signal is first given.

Surely seems like the correct result unless you don't consider his waving motion to fit the above definition as "any waving signal". I think it clearly was.

An invalid signal is not a penalty in college.  It is a dead ball.  It has been that way for like 15 years.  In the NFL it is a give yard penalty i believe.

And any waving in the manner he did it is an invalid signal because it forces the defensive player to stop to avoid a penalty.  Similar vein to the new rule about QBs faking slides.  If a Gopher had hit him (which is what he was trying to cause) it's a penalty.

DeJean knows the rules...he used them to get a penalty called on Nubin earlier in the game. (He called for the fair catch late)  For years returners would do the half wave or the wave off to get the D to pull up and it got super dangerous and was really just cheap anyways.

The only reason this is controversial is because the refs didn't blow the play dead which they should have done the second he fielded it.  Since it is reviewable though they let the play go on even though it is obvious the Gophers played it like he waved fair catch.

Lost in the shuffle of it all though is Iowa had the ball basically at midfield with a time out and plenty of time.  They only needed line 20 yards for a chance at a makeable kick with the wind for the win.  They went backwards...like they did the entire 2nd half and choked away their chance.  Happens all the time.  Too bad, so sad suck it up and stop whining.

Spot on Handy.

My guess is one of the officials heard a lot of barking from PJ about DeJean's fair catch signaling after the Nubin play and made sure they knew to watch for it again.

For all we know, one of the officials thought he saw a waving motion as DeJean was running toward the sideline and decided to let the play run out knowing it is a reviewable play (even if he didn't score, it's in the NCAA rulebook that the receiving team advancing the ball after a valid or invalid fair catch signal is reviewable) in case what they saw was just some weird motion when he was running. Imagine the uproar if they had blown it dead and it turned out DeJean had tripped and actually stuck his arm out to gain balance and then took the return to the house. Iowa fans would have burned Kinnick to the ground. Instead they thought they saw something and let the play continue knowing they'd be able to check on replay to confirm or deny what they saw.

In this case it is pretty plainly clear he was waving his arm off.

A similar play happened to Alex Erickson of Wisconsin in 2015 against Northwestern. He waved "get away" to his team, the ball bounced right to him, he broke a couple tackles and took it to the house. Refs discussed, called the play dead, and Wisconsin ended up losing 13-7.

This is so absolutely clear reading through the fair catch and reviewable plays sections that it was perfectly called on the field and in review. I disagree with the idea that the refs screwed up by not immediately blowing it dead as some are claiming. If you aren't sure, you absolutely let the play run out and you review it.

The rules are so explicit and clearly stated, it's irrefutable. You can argue whether it was waving, but even that is clearly described as a hand moving side to side.

The hilarious part is Iowa still could’ve just won the game as handy said. Once the gophers punted I thought for sure they lose on a longish FG and the drought vs Iowa continues. Instead their offense went full meltdown and iced the game for us ?. Part of me thought Iowa would do what they did on the first drive where the offense looked competent, in years past they had terrible offenses that made improbable plays and beat the gophers in close games (like that one catch that got reviewed). Today they just trolled and it was amazing lol

So obviously we’re all really happy we won the Pig. But I was flying yesterday and unable to watch the game. But going through social media and this thread it seems like prior to us winning on a crazy turn of events everyone was pretty fed up with the game, the team, and Fleck and his staff. Is that a fair assessment? Where do we go from here? Does this give us some momentum going forward or just enjoy the rare win over Iowa but know that this team is still probably not going to go very far?

Glad we won .. happy Floyd is back.

Might be one of the worst offensive games i have ever seen, especially at qb position. I can't believe how bad the Gopher offense is, play calling and game management are. Iowa qb the worst college qb i have ever seen in DI.

Play to win ..PJ still hasn't figured it out 7 years in. It's so frustrating to watch this guy call run, run, run ..,

PJ has played to win against Iowa and lost.  He decided to try to do to them what they always do to us...and much like it does for them somehow it worked despite it making zero sense whatsoever.  The problem with Iowa these days is they really can only win if you screw up.  They havent had a competent offense in like 3-4 years they win on the backs of their D either getting points or giving the offense short fields. (this year special teams is also part of it)  Even when our offense is clicking in previous years we will end up making mistakes. (ask Mo Ibrahim last year)  I was fine with everything they did EXCEPT THE PASS ON THE FINAL DRIVE.  Dumbest call of them all and was 100% him playing to win instead of playing smart.  Run the ball, make them kill the time out and go on to 3rd down.  Maybe I could see making that call if you are 2nd and 2 because Athan can roll out and get two yards if the pass isn't there but 2nd and 9?  Just stupid logic and playcalling.  Iowa's offense had 2 yards in the 2nd half, without a TO they are going to panic and screw it up...they proved it after the TD was rightfully called back.  PJ and the offensive coaches overthought it, played for the dagger and were lucky to escape it.

As for what the future holds...unless they figure out a strong running game they are going to struggle.  Athan just looks off.  We don't need to run it 40 times a game but we need to be able to do better than we have the offense is predicated on it.  Athan isn't mentally ready to lead the offense...

The good thing is that outside of tOSU none of the rest of the games are hard. (we always knew the second half would be easier than the first)  The bad thing is we are on the same level of the teams we are playing so who knows.  I think we can get to 7 wins...but they have to fix the offense and fast.

PJ hasn't figured out how to win?  In what universe are you living?

He has the best record since Bierman coached. He's above .600. Has beaten all of our primary rivals except for Michigan. Has beaten auburn.  Tied for first in the West once and tied for second twice.  Has won all four bowl games we appeared in during his five full seasons.

Every team has a crap year. Even Clemson is having a garbage year. What matters is long term average record. I'm willing to forgive a six-loss year if your median season at Minnesota is 9-4 and a bowl win.

With PJ I feel like there are times where he gets a bit overly conservative and shows too much respect to Iowa’s defense (which admittedly is elite). Part of this is because the gopher offense is young and kinda lacks talent so I understand why this happens, but it’s still kinda frustrating because typically vs Iowa they make a few more plays than us in these games every year to eek out an ugly win. Last year being a good example.

The bigger issue to me is the combination of Athan and the receiver talent being pretty mid which makes the offense very predictable and hard to watch. I assume Autman Bell is injured again because I don’t remember seeing him all year, Jackson and Crooms are alright and had some decent plays yesterday but aren’t all that consistent, haven’t seen much Brockington (he was solid last year). It’s not like having Bateman and Johnson, especially for the one game per year where CAB was healthy. Idk it just seems like recruiting has taken a step back from what we had in 2019 and I don’t know what it would take to get that back on track, I’m sure more NIL money wouldn’t hurt but it just seems like this program is nowhere near the elite NCAA teams when it comes to that. To me that’s the greater concern, that PJ has potentially peaked. But I think he deserves some leeway given the factors I just mentioned.
